The most wonderful time of the year…is now!

Have you heard that a ton of times? I have. For the longest time, I wondered what that meant. Now, follow me here. I don’t mean, I didn’t know Christmas was awesome. That’s not it.

In the last few years, it’s been tough around this time of the year. Two of my grandparents passed away in December – not the same year, but it’s never easy. I was blessed with extra grandparents. At one time, I had four sets. Yep, four. Grandparents and Great-Grandparents. Honestly, it was very cool. Also a culture clash, but I miss it. I miss them. I see ornaments given to us by them or even just the stuff we inherited and it’s tough.

Besides, 2016 has been a tough year. Our first dog, the one we’ve had a long time – almost 14 years – passed away. This has been the first holiday season without her. We have other dogs and the cats, but she was one of our children. Explaining to people why a song or a commercial makes me cry is rough. Canon in D makes me think of when I got married, which makes me think of being young and getting the dog… and yeah, tears.

But over Thanksgiving, I came to a realization. I looked at all of the reasons I wasn’t fond of this time of the year and got depressed. But that’s now that the holiday season is for. Sure, we should look back on the year and our lives and reflect. But it’s more than that. For me, it’s looking back on the things that happened and the fun. What did we accomplish? How did we grow.

I managed to deal with health problems, survived surgery and am so glad I went through the trial. I feel better, that’s for sure.

I wrote in a Kindle World. That was big. I did a completely self-published project and put it out.

I’m raising the boy and successfully got him through another Cross Country season. He improved his time and is doing 5k races after the season.

Dh is my biggest support and I love him. We’ve grown a ton through the year.

I visited the Cincinnati Reds baseball park. #win

I’ve got great friends who have my back and I cherish them.

I’ve got goals for next year. Writing another kindle world book, continuing the Sanctuary series, continuing the Cedarwood series… writing as much as the muse allows… and being happy for what I have and those in my life.

“I don’t know,” Austin called. “I think we need a couple of selfie ones.”

She froze. Selfie ones. Yeah, a personal shot would be good. She handed her phone to him without looking back at him. “Go for it.”

“Thank you.” 

She didn’t bother to watch. She’d seen him photograph himself plenty of times. He always managed to take the best shots and never had his hair out of place or his eyes funny. When she tried to take selfies, she looked ridiculous.

“I did a couple.” Austin eased up beside her and draped his arm around her shoulders. “Smile.”

When she glanced up, he snapped a photo. 

“Why did you do that?” she asked and reached for the phone.

“Because you’re adorable.” He kissed her temple and took another picture. “And I love to irritate you.” He kept her phone and strolled away from her. “Aura is going to love what you’re doing. They’re lucky we’re doing this.”

“Correction. They asked specifically for you. I got to do this because they had to take me.” She tucked the notebook back in her bag and slid the memory card from her camera. “Want me to take off? You’ve probably got a girlfriend dying to spend the night with you.”

Austin groaned and took the memory card from her hands. He led her across the room to the bed and tugged her down beside him. “You make me sound like I can’t keep my dick in my pants.”

She shrugged, not wanting to argue with him. Austin liked to date and loved to tell her about his dates. “You like all the girls you’re with, then you sleep with them and the relationship falls apart. I don’t know if the shine is gone or your attention span is that small, but you can’t commit.”

“You sound like Serena.”

“I’ve been witness to almost all of your relationships since college.” She stood, but he tugged her back onto the bed. “Austin, stop playing with my head, okay?”

“No.” He grabbed the remote and switched on the television. “How can I stop playing with your head? I invited you to stay the night with me in a hotel room. I never said we had to fuck or that I expected something from you. The idea of the photos was your idea—a great one at that—but I’m just going along. Relax and let me give you a great night.”

She scrubbed both hands over her face again and sighed. Being alone with him wasn’t an awful idea. She’d fallen hard for Austin so many times. At least this time she had photos for later. When he moved on and found the woman of his dreams, she’d have a reminder of the man who owned her heart.

“Well?” He met her gaze and grinned. “What do you think?”

“Sure.” What else did she have to lose?

“The acoustics in the room are great, too. Did you have professionals do the work, or did you do it yourself?”

“I got help. I knew how I wanted it to be, but getting it just right required someone who could make it happen.” Jon draped his arm around Benny’s shoulders. “Does it pass your inspection?”

“Uh-huh.” Jon gathered Benny in his arms. “I’m glad we didn’t give up back at the bistro. I was a shit and I need to redeem myself.”

“You’re doing pretty well.” He noticed the amber and dark brown flecks in Jon’s eyes. He breathed in the scent of Jon’s cologne and bit back a groan as he brushed the growing bulge in his pants against the front of Jon’s slacks.

“Damn.” Jon brushed his lips across Benny’s and bumped noses with him. “I’ve got plenty of time to touch, please and tease you.”

“Uh-huh.” He gasped for breath before Benny kissed Jon. He tasted the tangy beer on Jon’s lips. His teeth clashed with Jon’s as Jon deepened the connection. Jon swallowed his moan.

Dear God. Jon confused and aroused Benny. He liked being held and the way Jon took control when he kissed. Liked the taste of Jon. Wanted Jon’s arms around him and Jon’s body pressed against his. But confusion crept in. He knew his heart and looks. Knew his past. Would he be enough for Jon to want a second date?

Jon broke the connection again and a lazy smile curled on his lips. “I should’ve done that a long time ago.”

“You’ve kissed me before.” Benny panted to catch his breath. He hadn’t been this out of sorts in a long time.

“Those were warm-ups for now.”
