John’s breath clogged in his throat. He’d gotten three of the four lions out of the enclosure and into the adjacent farm, but Markas hadn’t made it past the hole in the metal fence. Fuck.

“Joe, I need your help. Now.” He didn’t wait for his brother to answer. “I’m getting the sheet and tossing him onto it. Not the best way to move a lion, but this one is a sweet boy, and he’s hurt. I can’t let the hunters have him.” Don’t let the bullet be in his chest or his head, he thought. Let them have hit him somewhere that’s not life-threatening.

“You tell me when to pull and I’ll do it.” Joe appeared at the hole. “I’ll keep watch.”

John scrambled around the cat, hefting the animal’s legs onto the sheet and then moving his upper body to the sheet as well. Gunfire rang out over his head, making him wince. He’d never been in combat and knew he wasn’t meant for a soldier’s life, but if he could save the beautiful animal, he’d take a few gunshots whizzing past his head.

Let’s just hope they don’t connect with me, too. “Pull. Joe, pull,” John shouted. With his brother’s help, John managed to get the cat to the hole in the fence.

“He’s heavy,” Joe groaned. “I’ve got him, but damn. What are you going to do with him? He’s been shot?”

“I know. I’ve got Willow Needs coming over. She’s a trained veterinarian.” John yanked one last time, getting the lion through the fence. Once they were all safe, he shoved the planks back into place. “There.” He turned his attention to Joe. “She’s been lobbying since high school to get this place shut down. She’s all onboard to help us.”

“Good,” Joe replied.

John checked the wound. Whoever had shot the cat had managed to hit the target but hadn’t buried the bullet deep. Still, the hole was high on the lion’s hip. They’d need to get him to the barn soon.

“I’ve got the others on the trailer. They went pretty easily.” Joe stood beside John. “Ready to put him in the truck?”

When John glanced up at his brother, Joe’s eyes were wide. “What?” John asked.

Joe opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before he spoke. “I don’t think we’ll need the trailer for him.”

John looked back at the covered-up hole. No one was trying to get through. “What is your problem?”

“Your lion is a guy.”

“What?” John stared at his brother. “Did you get hit on the head? He’s a lion.”

“Look.” Joe pointed to the big cat, except the cat wasn’t one any longer. Joe was right. A man lay crumpled against John’s hip.

John met his brother’s confused gaze. He had plenty of his own questions. Some of the lions at the petting zoo really were shifters. Dear God, they’d been bred so many times. It was possible some used for the canned hunts could’ve been shifters, too.

His stomach lurched.

“I’ve never seen one in person, but we’ve got a shifter.”

A bobcat who doesn’t think he belongs and a lion who believes he is unlovable…can they make a relationship work?

Avan has made his share of mistakes, but those are in the past. Moving forward means forgiving himself and having a life at the Sanctuary. He wants just one shifter—Oscar. The bobcat shifter soothes his soul and seems to see the best in Avan. But will he want to be with Avan, even after everything Avan’s done?

Oscar’s lusted after Avan since he first saw him. He doesn’t care what Avan’s done because he believes everyone deserves a second chance. But Oscar’s got a past, too. He’d never felt like he belongs, even at the Sanctuary. The one place he feels safe is with Avan.

The odds a bobcat and lion should be together are low, but the passion between them sizzles. Can they find common ground and embrace their roar or will their differences destroy the blossoming relationship?

He left his seat. “I’m going out. I need some air.” He walked out of the library and collided with a solid wall of man. “What the hell?” He knew the scent wafting around him. Oscar? He met the gaze of the person he’d run into. “Oscar.”

“Hi.” Oscar blushed. “I meant to find you.”

“You did.” He wanted to run his hands all over Oscar. The lion knew the bobcat was there, and he wanted to keep him. The lion yearned to rub his scent all over Oscar. He held back, despite the cat shredding him from the inside.

Oscar opened his mouth three times before he said anything. “Are you going to leave?”

No way in hell. Oscar was there, and he’d take advantage of the situation. “With Markas? Or those two?” He gestured to the library.

Oscar edged his shoulder up in a tiny shrug. “Either.”

Was he trying to be coy? Was that hunger in Oscar’s eyes? Desire? Well, fuck him, yes, it sure looked like desire. Avan nodded to the doorway then brushed past Oscar. The lion hated Avan for making it wait.

“Let’s go to the porch.” His voice cracked. Damn. He didn’t care if Oscar knew he was nervous, but he didn’t want the truth to be so obvious.

“Yeah.” Oscar followed Avan outside. “Phew. It got hot in there. Did they have the heat on? It’s May. Isn’t it too warm out for the heat inside?”

“I doubt they turned on the furnace.” But it was nice to know Oscar was affected, too. Avan had thought he was the only one with a fever. He needed the change in temperature to clear his thoughts. “Here.” He pointed to the swing. “Join me?”

“The guys won’t make fun?” Oscar sat with him. “I’m not exactly popular with them. Ryder even jokes about me, and he’s supposed to be a friend.”

“Why?” Once Avan found out why Ryder had said anything to upset Oscar, he’d give Ryder a new asshole.

“I stuck up for you.” His blush deepened. “He’s a jerk.”

“He is.” He paused. Oscar intrigued him. He hadn’t thought Oscar cared—not enough to say anything. “I’m glad.”

“You’re happy he’s a jerk?” Oscar frowned. “I wish he’d lay off.” He stared at Avan. “Ryder told me I’m attracted to you, and everyone knows. I didn’t know.” He froze, and the color bled from his face. “Shit.”

“What?” He didn’t care who saw them. “Do you like me?” He and his lion wanted the attraction to be mutual. “Oscar?”

“I don’t know.” Oscar sagged in his seat. “Avan.”

Avan faced Oscar and tipped up Oscar’s chin, forcing Oscar to meet his gaze. “I get the feeling you do like me.” He wanted to look into those green eyes forever—especially when he sank deep into Oscar. “But I understand you’re not ready to admit it, and that’s cool.”

“It is?”

“First, I mark myself.” John nuzzled Markas’ crotch, rubbing his face over the
bulge in Markas’ pants. “Learn your scent and get used to you.”

Heat flowed through Markas’ body. He tingled. The cat within him clawed at him. Did the animal like John’s approach? Seemed so. Markas parted his lips and breathed through his mouth. He wished he had his fangs. He’d seen male cats bite the females during sex. The urge to do that to John came to mind.

“Second, I open your pants.” John gazed up at him. He eased the front of the pants apart. The loose fabric landed at Markas’ feet. “You’ve been holding out on me.”

“I have?” Markas grinned. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“Oh? Well, this dick is guaranteed to please.” John chuckled. “Now, the next part is for me to tease you.” He curled his fingers around Markas’ erection and gazedup into Markas’ eyes. Without breaking their connection, he flicked his tongue along the head of Markas’ dick.

“I-I have no words.” Markas swayed on his feet. He wished he would’ve braced himself on the bed as he’d been told. He rocked backward.

“Stretch out.” John nudged him onto the mattress. “Let me do the work.”

“Sure.” He closed his eyes and basked in the sensations. He’d never felt someone touching his cock, other than when he’d been encouraged to mate with the females at the zoo. He preferred being with John.

Markas threaded his fingers into John’s short hair and pulled. Each time John swallowed Markas’ dick to the back of his throat, Markas whimpered. His body heated, and everything within him tingled. He opened his mouth to breathe but couldn’t seem to do more than pant.

“Good?” John asked. He cupped Markas’ balls in his hand and stroked Markas’ sac while he raked his teeth along the shaft of Markas’ cock.

Markas let go of John’s hair and propped himself up on his elbows. He had to watch his friend move. Had to. He rocked his hips, shoving his dick into John’s mouth. Everything felt so good. He grunted, and his cat paced within him.

He muttered words, but nothing he understood. Was it the lion growling? He wasn’t sure. Markas shivered. He balled his fists and tightened his knees around John’s head. He couldn’t get enough of John.

“Oh my God.”

Ryan ‘Blaze’ Burden knew his life wasn’t perfect. He’s a stripper at Stiff and a shifter, but he can’t tell anyone about his special ability. The popularity of shifters hasn’t come to Stiff or the town of Sugar Ridge, for that matter. Being a shifter is still frowned upon. Ryan knows he doesn’t fit in, but he does have one bright spot in his life—the mystery man who comes to the club and requests Ryan for private dances. The electricity between them is palpable, but if Ryan makes a move, will the hottie reciprocate?

Delaney Sullivan doesn’t come to Stiff for the ambiance. He’s there for one dancer—Blaze. He senses the shifter within the handsome young man. But Delaney works for the enemy—he’s the campaign manager for the mayor of Sugar Ridge. He doesn’t share the mayor’s desire to outlaw shifters because he’s a panther shifter. Can he get Blaze out of the club? To trust him? Or maybe even to love him?

These opposites certainly attract, but can they find the mutual trust to have a future together?

“You want me.”

“Yes, I do.” He needed to get through to Blaze. Not everyone wanted to use him. “I’d rather you didn’t dance for me.”

“Christ.” Blaze left Delaney’s lap. “I knew it. You’re trying to get me to quit.”

Shit. Yes, he wanted Blaze out of the business, but it wasn’t because he wanted to save all of the strippers.

“I’m not quitting. I make good money here, and I can keep on the down low. No taxes. Yeah, fuck you.” Blaze growled. “I can’t get my paperwork. I’m not allowed because I can’t document where I came from.”

“Why?” Every shifter had been given the right to gain a driver’s license, a job and a passport. Where Blaze had come from wasn’t an issue.

“No. I’m not doing it. I can’t. Look, tell management, but I can’t do this. I’ll take the hit.” Blaze shook his head again. “I can’t.”

Delaney took money from his pocket. He’d tucked a note between the bills, wanting Blaze to see it later. He pushed the cash into Blaze’s hand. “You’re a good man.”

He should say more but didn’t know what to do. He left his chair and ducked out of the private room. Embarrassment washed over him as he walked out of the club. Being there was dangerous. If someone recognized the head of the mayor’s campaign at a strip club, Delaney would lose his job. He made his way through the private exit and disappeared through the tunnel to the parking garage.

His panther craved Blaze. The big cat sensed Blaze’s confusion. Yes, the cash was good, but something about Blaze screamed that the shifter wanted to be a decent man. Delaney sighed and climbed behind the wheel of his car. Hopefully, Blaze would read the note and take him seriously. Maybe, there was a chance they could find common ground or even a friendship. A relationship was probably out of the question. Too bad, the cat didn’t care. Delaney wished his panther would settle down. There wouldn’t be any claiming tonight, and the panther would have to wait.

Luke strolled out of the building and put on his sunglasses. He strode over to his car then tossed his jacket and his briefcase onto the backseat before climbing behind the wheel. He turned on the radio. One of his favorite songs played, so he blasted the tune and sang along as he drove down the lane away from the Sanctuary. Though the property sat on a state route, there wasn’t much traffic. He stopped just past the gate and checked the traffic before pulling onto the road. He started toward Oakdale, but at the single crossroads before the city limits, he noticed a beat-up brown truck.

He paused. People never abandoned cars by the intersection. They waited for the dirt turnaround about a mile down the road. Was there a problem? An accident? He normally would’ve kept going, but something called to him. He noticed a man behind the wheel of the vehicle. The need to help strengthened. For all Luke knew, the guy was having a heart attack or maybe a seizure. He needed to stop and help.

Luke pulled off in front of the vehicle and patted the gun he’d strapped to his hip. He kept himself current at the gun range but hadn’t needed the piece until now. He backed up alongside the vehicle and rolled his window down.

“Do you need help?” Luke asked. He kept one hand on the car’s shifter. “Buddy?”

The wide-eyed man stared at Luke. “What’s your name?”

“My…” This was odd. “Luke Stevens. I’m an attorney. I work with the Sanctuary.”

The guy bolted out of the truck and yanked on the passenger-side handle of the car. “Help me.”

“I don’t know you. Are you hurt? I can call the ambulance.” He didn’t unlock the door. For a split-second, he could’ve sworn he saw a lion in the man’s eyes. It had to be his imagination. He’d never seen the animal in Markas’ eyes, and he knew Markas was a shifter. Could this man be a shifter? Or the jerk sending the screwy emails?

“I’m not hurt yet. Please? I need help.” Another flash of the lion shone in the man’s golden eyes. “You were honest with me. I’ll be honest with you. My name is Saul Mason. I was born at the Philadelphia Zoo four years ago. I’ve been able to shift for a year, and the first time I shifted at the zoo, the workers thought someone had stolen me. They thought I was the thief. I didn’t steal a lion—I am the lion.”

“A shifter.” Luke had already been given that information, but he had to stay it out loud to make sense in his head.

“And you’re with the Sanctuary. Help me.” The pleading in Saul’s voice got to Luke. “Please?”

He unlocked the door. “Get in.” He could take Saul back to Sanctuary, and if nothing else, help him get established there. God knew Markas would see through Saul if the guy was lying.

Saul crawled into the car and locked the door. He hunkered down on the seat. “Fate’s a bitch, but at least, I found you and not him.” He put the window up. “I think I’m actually safe.”

“Did you need something—anything—from your vehicle?” Luke asked.

“No. It’s from a friend. Some people think I stole it, but I didn’t.” Saul curled up in the seat. “I’m not a good guy. I’ve done bad shit in order to stay alive. I didn’t steal the truck, but I don’t regret taking it. A man named Tucci swore I belonged to him. I don’t know what he wants, but it can’t be good.”

“Tucci? As in Anthony Tucci?” Luke put the car in gear and made an illegal U-turn in order to go back to Sanctuary.

“Oh God. Don’t tell me you work for him.” Saul scratched at the door handle. “I need to get out.”

“Stop.” Luke swatted at Saul. “No, I don’t.” He punched the gas. The faster he got to Sanctuary, the quicker he could unload Saul. “I don’t know where Tucci is. I’ve never met him, and no, I don’t work for him. He’s not high on my list, though.”

“You’re not a shifter.” Saul remained low in his seat, but his tone changed. He stared at Luke. “I can smell it. You’re not.”

“That’s how you know? My smell?” He’d showered that morning and put on antiperspirant. Hopefully, he didn’t stink.

“You’ve got a scent, yes. It’s not like a dirty smell. It’s just you, and my lion can tell. It’s what told me; you’re a safe person. Sometimes, my instincts have been off, but not this time. Most people freak out when the word shifter is used. You didn’t flinch.”

“I’m honored, but I’ve worked with shifters before. I never know what to expect with them, but I’m not scared, either.” He wouldn’t admit to his fear, though. For all he knew, Saul could snap and do something horrible to him. “My friends run the Sanctuary. They’ll help you as much as possible. As for the maybe-not-quite stolen truck, I should get that sorted out.” He should probably turn Saul in, too, but he’d worry about that later.

“I wasn’t lying. I didn’t steal it. The truck was given to me by the one human who actually believed I was a shifter.” Saul grasped Luke’s free hand. “I borrowed it because I needed to get away from the zoo. I had permission.” He faced Luke. “At the zoo was a keeper named Saul, and that was his truck. He didn’t want it, but he wanted to help me get away from Tucci. He saw me shift and didn’t flip out. He said shifters are natural creatures and should be respected. He helped me until the freak-out died down then he got me out of the zoo. He’s the reason I’m here and not in the enclosure or dead.”

“If I contact him, will he verify this information?” Luke asked. He turned back onto the Sanctuary lane and swiped his keycard in the reader. He wasn’t sure if he believed Saul—or whatever the shifter’s name happened to be—but he also wasn’t convinced the story was a lie.

“Yeah.” The shifter offered up a badge. “See this? This is his old one, but it’s got his information. I’m supposed to say I’m him if I get into trouble.” He pointed to the plastic card on the lanyard and sighed. “So you’ll help me?”

“John and Joe will wonder why I’m back here already.” Luke parked the car in front of the fountain. “Let’s go inside. You can tell them everything, and they’ll help you.”

“You’re not staying?”

Leo sighed. He still didn’t understand all the little sayings, and all he pictured was John’s head turning into a pair of ears—with no face. He scratched his head and focused on why he’d come to John. “I like being a shifter and all, but I want to make some changes.” There. He’d said it. How would John react?

“You can’t be a lion all of the time or abandon your animal side. That’s impossible, so what did you have in mind?”

Leo tugged on his hair. “I want to change this. I want to cut it. Can I do that?” He wasn’t sure why he felt compelled to ask. He’d seen plenty of shows on television where people simply cut their hair without asking anyone’s permission. But as far as he knew, they weren’t shifters.

“Oh. I don’t see why not. It’s your hair, so it’s your choice.” John cocked his head. “I can set up an appointment with the guy who cuts my hair.”

“There’s one more thing.” He paused and sucked in a ragged breath. “I want a tattoo.”

John’s eyebrows rose. “A tattoo?”

“If that’s what those drawings on skin are called, then yes, a tattoo.” He knew what he wanted, too.

“I don’t know how that would affect your lion form, but it’s your body.” John frowned. “I haven’t thought about it. Would the tat show up on the lion’s body? And would cutting your hair affect your mane? I’m not sure.”

Leo had asked for the first two things without much resistance. Now for the third. “I want to get a piercing, too.”

“Oh boy,” John said. “You want to go all in. Is this because of Axl?”

“Huh?” He’d wanted to stand out. Maybe, if he had something special about him, Axl would notice, but that wasn’t the main reason he wanted the tattoo or the piercing. He wanted to be himself. Being different felt right.

“You and Axl are tight, but he’s so…withdrawn and angry. Are you trying to get his attention or be like him? You’re handsome the way you are—no holes or ink needed.”

“I want to be different.” He wasn’t sure why. He just knew that’s what he wanted.

“A tattoo will certainly make you different.” John folded his arms. “I can’t tell you not to, but I’d suggest running it by Axl.”

“He’s not my mate.” Although, I want him to be.

What was it about Ben that kept Joe thinking about him? He closed his eyes and stood under the searing-hot spray. With other guys, Joe did the casual thing. Have a good time but no strings, so no one got hurt. Until now, that plan had worked. Right?
Kind of. Sure, he had nothing holding him down, but when he looked at John and Markas together, jealousy hit. He wanted that kind of devotion. Would he get it with Ben?

Ben was certainly different. He was innocent and deserved someone worthy of him. Joe wasn’t worthy of too much of anything. He’d had a little too much fun and broken a few too many hearts along the way. Ben needed true devotion and a good match.

Joe snorted. He was great as a reporter and nosy as hell, but he sucked at relationships. Ben deserved a partner, not a player.

Still, he liked Ben. He worried about the shifter and wanted him to be happy. Could Joe make Ben happy? Doubtful.

Joe opened his eyes and washed the cum from his body. He’d be a friend and help Ben find a suitable partner. No romantic entanglements—just friendship—even if it damn near killed him not to be the man in Ben’s arms and bed.

This was one situation he couldn’t screw up.
