When the Plan Comes Together by @MeganSlayer #iamwriting #authorcollaboration #writingwithfriends #pnr

Not quite a year ago, I was asked to take part in an anthology. I came up with a story and had a good start on said story. A paranormal tale featuring a vampire. The problem was that the anthology fell through. I had a story, but nothing to do with it. Well, not nothing, but it was temporarily homeless.

That’s when the idea struck. Well, kind of. Heh heh. I had some ideas to wait a year, since it was rumbling quickly toward Halloween by the time I finished my story and there was no way I’d be able to put it out before the holiday. So I shelved the book and planned to release it during the next Halloween Holiday Season.

Fast forward to February. I can’t release a vampire story at Valentine’s day when it has to do with Halloween, but I had another idea. I’d always wanted to write with Madison Sevier. She’s one of my best friends. Why not? And what if we created something super special and super secret for the convention we were going to do in June? That’s when the idea of writing Faeries After Dark came about.

I also happened to find my faerie wings in the closet.

So I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to write a pair of faeries. Sisters. Since I had blue wings, mine could be blue and since Madison loves purple…well, you get the idea. What we did with the faeries was up to us. Madison and I discussed the idea and once the ball started rolling, we ran with it.

My faerie is the pistol of the pair. She’s blue and excels at using blue language. She’s a love faerie, but love isn’t her strong point. She’s been kicked around a little by life and isn’t looking for a partner, but if a merman needs a hook-up, she’ll help him find the right man. Of course, another guy comes long ready to knock her off her feet. Good things she’s got wings.

Once we had the stories written, I created the cover art and poof! Done. Okay, there were edits in there and like most edits, they weren’t the most thrilling thing I’ve ever done, but they made the story better.

Then it was ready for print and eventually ebook upload. We revealed our plan in clues and super secret posts on social media. By the time we got to the party for the book on Friday at the event… we were overwhelmed by interest. So cool. Now the book is out in print and ebook for everyone to purchase. I hope you enjoy it.

If you’re an author looking to write a story with someone, think about a few things first. Do I trust this person? Will this person do something naughty? Is this partnership

possible? I got lucky. Madison and I work well together and are willing to compromise often. We’ve even got the next super secret project planned for Halloween a

nd for next June. Writing with other authors is fun, but stay on your guard. If you don’t trust the situation our your concerned, then don’t be afraid to say something. It might go wrong, but it might be exactly what you need to get the project off the ground.

Speaking of Faeries and off the ground, here’s a little more about the Faeries After Dark:

Wednesday Random Thoughts ~ Most Remarkable Characters with @MeganSlayer

Check it Out BannerNormally on Wednesdays I write book reviews. I have some books I could review, but I’ve had this blog topic on my mind for a while and I thought maybe I’d build up a bit of a backlog for book reviews and take this week off.

Now to the topic…

I love television and movies. I love music, too. While I was in the middle of a M*A*S*H binge, featuring McLean Stevens as Col. Henry Blake and I got to thinking. There are some truly remarkable characters. Is Henry remarkable? Some might disagree, but I think he is. I love the episodes he’s in more than the later ones. I like to laugh and he’s guaranteed to bring the laughs.  Oh, sure, I like Hawkeye and Trapper, but there’s something about Henry .

So in the middle of this binge, the episode where Henry goes home aired. I don’t know about you, but there are certain movies and tv shows I can’t watch when I know someone won’t make it. The episode, Abyssinia Henry, is one of them. I cry each time. I know what will happen. I’ve seen it a dozen times. But Henry is one of those characters I don’t want to see go away. I cry each time. Yes.

Now I’m going to make a huge jump. M*A*S*H is in a level above CSI: Miami, but these two shows have something in common. The loss of a character. Where I’ll cry because Henry doesn’t make it, I cry because Speedle is shot in the line of duty. I started watching CSI: Miami because I liked Wolfe. I won’t lie. I was drawn to him because he’s cute. Well, he is. But I had to get the rest of the plotline and I like to go back to the beginning with series once I know I’ve come in halfway through. So I binged the show’s first two seasons before they were pulled from the air. (They aren’t making any new CSI: Miami episodes and it’s kind of a shame. I liked that show.) Anyway, I watched and came to love Speedle. He’s a punk, cocky and snarky, but lovable. Plus, he’s kind of cute in a rugged kind of way. I had NO idea he wasn’t going to make it. When that episode came along…I was gobsmacked. Again, I cried. I liked this guy. WTH!

The same thing goes with The Fox and The Hound, Where the Red Fern Grows and Eight Below (but in those cases, it’s the dog(s) that don’t make it. I don’t like when the ones I love die.

Now I understand why the writers get rid of some characters and phase out others. You’ve got to evolve. BUT…that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I don’t like change. I really don’t. I’d prefer to have my characters live on forever.

What about you? Are there shows you have a hard time with because of the characters? Is there one or more that are your favorites?

She’d have to face the guy some time. She whipped around and collided with a solid wall of male muscle. He smelled like leather and stood at least eight inches taller than her. She splayed her hands on his chest to steady herself, then backed up. “Sorry.”

“I scared you?”

She met his gaze. Holy fuck. He had blue eyes. “Jinx?”

“That’s my brother.” He smiled. “Are you okay? You look lost and a little confused.”

A little? “You’re fucking serious? You’re not Jinx?” She swept her gaze over him. Christ. She’d cream her shorts at this rate. He had muscle in all the right places, a chiseled jaw, reddish blond hair and blue eyes. When he smiled, his dimple showed. He smelled good and when he spoke, shivers ran the length of her spine. And here she was with a wet tank top and hard nipples. She was so fucked.

“I’m serious.” He laughed and offered his hand. “Jinx—er—my brother, Jeremy, tends to be here. He paints. Why are you looking for him? It’s too late for him to paint tonight.”

“Oh. Right.” God. She sounded stupid. “I’ll stop talking now.”

“You don’t have to.” He slipped her hand into his and tugged her to the closest bench. “Have a seat, catch your breath and let’s talk. You look flustered. You can’t possibly be a hitwoman or out to find him because of a secret baby.”

“Why not?” Being a hitwoman wasn’t on her radar, but anything was possible.

“Despite your foul mouth, you’re too sweet.” He nodded to the bench. “Sit. Tell me your name and what’s going on.”

She plopped onto the bench and willed her chest to cooperate. She pressed her knees together. Christ, the heat in her body would overwhelm her sooner than later. She wanted to touch him again and feel that sizzle. “My name is Cory…Cordelia.” She shook hands with him. Damn. Firm grip. What would it feel like to have those hands around her waist during sex? Probably heaven… Shit. She had to focus. “I’m actually trying to find Jinx or Jeremy, as you called him, for a friend of mine. A mutual friend told me to get them in contact and put in a good word.”

“Is either friend a guy?”

“Yeah. One of them is.” She slid her gaze to him. “Why? Didn’t you know he’s gay?”

“I knew.”

“Before we go any farther, what’s your name?” Call her nosy, but she wanted to address him properly when she asked him to bed later.

“Liam. It’s short for William. William Darling.” He shook her hand again. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Cordelia.”

Monday Morning Movie Rundown ~ The Conspirator

Monday Movie Rundown Banner I like my share of older movies and the one I’m talking about today isn’t new. But it’s not old. It’s new-ish. At least it is compared to some of the movies I tend to watch.

This week I watched The Conspirator. First, I’m a history buff, so the movies that have a true story running through them (notice I didn’t say are the true story because this is Hollywood and they never get it 100% right) are interesting to me. I know this isn’t completely factual, but I like how movies like this inspire me to go to the library to learn more–which I did.

Second, I could listen to James McAvoy read the phone book and I’d be perfectly happy. Yes, he’s one of my favorite actors. That said, I didn’t realize he was in this film until I got the copy from the library. As Frederick Aiken, he’s quite good. I appreciated him having a Northern accent–hey, he could still read the phone book and I’d be happy, no matter what accent.

I also liked Robin Wright. Most people see her and think of Jenny from Forrest Gump, but I can say for me she became Mary Surratt. I wasn’t watching actors, but it felt like I was there.

Now this is a depressing movie. Truly. You know the president dies. That’s in all of the history books, but when the people behind the scenes are presented, it puts a different spin on what happened. It’s awful no matter what, but these people were people, too. I liked how the director, Robert Redford, ensured each character was human, rather than demonized.

If you want a movie that will make you think and possibly want to learn more about the Lincoln assassination, then The Conspirator might be the film for you.

When the Con Comes Alive by @MeganSlayer #RAGT17

2017 RAGT Author I promised I’d write a post about #RAGT17 and I’m not going to welch on the deal. First things first, what is RAGT? It’s the Reader and Author Get Together. What’s it all about? Authors and Readers getting together for general fun time. We’re talking hanging out and talking about books. 🙂 It’s the brainchild of Lori Foster and I love to attend. It’s always a good time.

So many great things happened this year. First, there were over 163 first timers this year! Yeah, over 163 out of 515 attendees. We (Cheryl Dragon, Jocie McKade and I) ordered 175 first timer bags and all were given away. How cool is that? I want to thank the people who donated to those bags. Without you, the bags would be…well…empty! Erin McCarthy, Paige Tyler and CC Dragon donated books, so each bag got a book. If you donated to our bags, thank you. We appreciate it and the first timers felt the love. ❤

I wish I could say I got pictures at the event, but I didn’t. Nope. I forgot to take any. I’m sure photos of me will show up all over facebook and other social media. I’m okay with that. Look for me and if you see me, then tag me.

I want to thank CH Admirand for donating books to the volunteers at RAGT. That was so cool. We love those books. Besides, CH is just a fantastic person. I’m so glad I got to see her again this year.

Thank you to Cheryl Dragon and Jocie McKade for help with the Welcoming Committee this year. You both rock. ❤

As for the super secret, super special surprise this year with Madison Sevier, holy crap…did our surprise go over well. If you didn’t know about it, we wrote Faeries After Dark just for RAGT. You can get the print version right now on Amazon and on the 28th of June, the ebook version will be available. If you haven’t snagged a copy or were in our blogger lounge and missed out, be sure to grab a copy today! Thank you to everyone who showed up to the event. We’re already planning something super secret and super special for next year. Stay tuned. It’s going to be epic…again!

If you bought a copy of my book at the bookstore, thank you. It was a total shock to see my book there and I’m thankful that Gayle was able to get it in. It was a real treat to see it there. If you bought a copy of my books from me, then thank you! I’m happy to say I sold out and I’m thrilled the books are with you to enjoy and treasure. You all rock!

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Sparkling Authors promotion. Jocie McKade, Cheryl Dragon, Tina Holland, Constance Phillips, Renee Vincent, Amy Gregory, D Renee Bagby, Madison Sevier and I had a blast with this promotion. If you collected even a few of the charms, you’ve got a great start for a bracelet. If you got all of them, even better. Sparkling Authors, I’ll have that list to you soon for the newsletters. One thing at a time. 😊

As always, I want to thank the volunteers including Lady B, Sabra, Christy, Tommie, and everyone for making the event so much fun. Thank you to Lori for having a fun event that’s always a pleaser.

Whew…I think that’s everyone and everything. If you’ve never gone to this event, consider it. Through the raffles, we raised over $22,000 for the One Way Farm, over $1,500 for the local APL and had a blast just hanging out as a collection of readers and friends. Here’s to a fantastic 2018 and hope to see you there!

Monday Movie Rundown ~ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Monday Movie Rundown Banner I’m a tad late on the post today, but here’s my thoughts on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

I’ve watched all of the Harry Potter movies and I’ve loved them. This movie is in the quirky vein of those movies, but it’s not quite the same. I like how the other films tackled awkward characters and misfits. This movie does, too. The beasts are upon first viewing, misfits and dangerous. Once they’re true abilities are seen, they’re seen in a different light. Isn’t that how humans should be seen, too? Despite what we believe on the outside, we’re unique on the inside.

I had one quibble with the movie, though. One of the characters was, in my humble opinion, treated rather unfairly. I wished for a different ending with him, but it didn’t happen. Did this take away from the ultimate enjoyment of the movie for me? Yeah, a little. But the swirling colors, the imaginative characters and creatures as well as the plot made up for that quibble.

If you’re looking for an offbeat, quirky movie that’s equal parts intriguing and fantastic, then this is the movie for you.

Wednesday Book Review ~ Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

LILYTed—a gay, single, struggling writer is stuck: unable to open himself up to intimacy except through the steadfast companionship of Lily, his elderly dachshund. When Lily’s health is compromised, Ted vows to save her by any means necessary. By turns hilarious and poignant, an adventure with spins into magic realism and beautifully evoked truths of loss and longing, Lily and the Octopus reminds us how it feels to love fiercely, how difficult it can be to let go, and how the fight for those we love is the greatest fight of all.

I have to be honest. I’m supposed to read this book for my book club. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. The premise snagged me. I won’t lie. A guy and his dog. Yep. I’m a dog person. Okay, I’m a critter person. I’m the one who swears at the movie when the people live but the dog/cat/ferret/etc dies. I knew what would happen. Spoiler alert…yeah, there’s a very tissue-worthy moment at the end. Like super tissue-worthy.

But to tell you how I feel about the book…it’s complicated. I liked it. Okay, I liked parts of it. The connection between Ted and Lily was a riot. How she talked… In! All! Exclamation! Points! is very much how Dachshunds bark, so effectively how they talk. I loved that part. How she was his support was good, too. If you’ve ever had a connection with a dog, you know they aren’t just pets. They’re family. So I got and loved that part.

But there were points I kinda wasn’t impressed. The whole portion with the octopus was a little hard to handle. Once I understood, then I understood, but it took a bit. Then there was his tendency to drown his sorrows in pills and booze. Hey. We’ve all been there. Done things we wouldn’t normally do. That made Ted real, but I guess I expected something different. Maybe more….arguing. More fighting. Maybe I lost it in the metaphor of the octopus.

Either way, the book was good, but I’m not sure I can read it again. The bit at the end where I mentioned the tissues was a tad too real for me. Having put an animal down not long ago, this made those memories rawer. So if that’s a trigger for you, then read the book, but be warned. If you’re looking for a sweet, sappy ending, you might be surprised.

I’d buy this one and keep it, but I’m not sure I can handle reading it again right now. See what you think. You might be pleasantly surprised…after tissues.
