Breaking down and asking for help could be the key to his salvation.

Chris isn’t like the shifters at Sanctuary. Born in a zoo and on the run now that he can shift, he’s looking for a place to belong. When he breaks down outside of Cambridge, not far from the Sanctuary, he thinks he’s done for. He’ll be caught, returned to the zoo or worse… He’s always been a survivor, but even Chris has demons he can’t quite outrun. He’s being hunted. He’ll need some help—if he’s willing to accept his fate.

Luke Stephens wants nothing more than to get over his ex-boyfriend. The lawyer can argue cases with ease, but not the one that mattered. That is until he meets Chris. The shifter provokes Luke and brings out his natural instinct to protect. He’s intrigued and Chris is so handsome.

Will Luke be man enough for the shifter or will the danger come between them before they can get the fire started?

Luke strolled out of the building and put on his sunglasses. He strode over to his car then tossed his jacket and his briefcase onto the backseat before climbing behind the wheel. He turned on the radio. One of his favorite songs played, so he blasted the tune and sang along as he drove down the lane away from the Sanctuary. Though the property sat on a state route, there wasn’t much traffic. He stopped just past the gate and checked the traffic before pulling onto the road. He started toward Oakdale, but at the single crossroads before the city limits, he noticed a beat-up brown truck.

He paused. People never abandoned cars by the intersection. They waited for the dirt turnaround about a mile down the road. Was there a problem? An accident? He normally would’ve kept going, but something called to him. He noticed a man behind the wheel of the vehicle. The need to help strengthened. For all Luke knew, the guy was having a heart attack or maybe a seizure. He needed to stop and help.

Luke pulled off in front of the vehicle and patted the gun he’d strapped to his hip. He kept himself current at the gun range but hadn’t needed the piece until now. He backed up alongside the vehicle and rolled his window down.

“Do you need help?” Luke asked. He kept one hand on the car’s shifter. “Buddy?”

The wide-eyed man stared at Luke. “What’s your name?”

“My…” This was odd. “Luke Stevens. I’m an attorney. I work with the Sanctuary.”

The guy bolted out of the truck and yanked on the passenger-side handle of the car. “Help me.”

“I don’t know you. Are you hurt? I can call the ambulance.” He didn’t unlock the door. For a split-second, he could’ve sworn he saw a lion in the man’s eyes. It had to be his imagination. He’d never seen the animal in Markas’ eyes, and he knew Markas was a shifter. Could this man be a shifter? Or the jerk sending the screwy emails?

“I’m not hurt yet. Please? I need help.” Another flash of the lion shone in the man’s golden eyes. “You were honest with me. I’ll be honest with you. My name is Saul Mason. I was born at the Philadelphia Zoo four years ago. I’ve been able to shift for a year, and the first time I shifted at the zoo, the workers thought someone had stolen me. They thought I was the thief. I didn’t steal a lion—I am the lion.”

“A shifter.” Luke had already been given that information, but he had to stay it out loud to make sense in his head.

“And you’re with the Sanctuary. Help me.” The pleading in Saul’s voice got to Luke. “Please?”

He unlocked the door. “Get in.” He could take Saul back to Sanctuary, and if nothing else, help him get established there. God knew Markas would see through Saul if the guy was lying.

Saul crawled into the car and locked the door. He hunkered down on the seat. “Fate’s a bitch, but at least, I found you and not him.” He put the window up. “I think I’m actually safe.”

“Did you need something—anything—from your vehicle?” Luke asked.

“No. It’s from a friend. Some people think I stole it, but I didn’t.” Saul curled up in the seat. “I’m not a good guy. I’ve done bad shit in order to stay alive. I didn’t steal the truck, but I don’t regret taking it. A man named Tucci swore I belonged to him. I don’t know what he wants, but it can’t be good.”

“Tucci? As in Anthony Tucci?” Luke put the car in gear and made an illegal U-turn in order to go back to Sanctuary.

“Oh God. Don’t tell me you work for him.” Saul scratched at the door handle. “I need to get out.”

“Stop.” Luke swatted at Saul. “No, I don’t.” He punched the gas. The faster he got to Sanctuary, the quicker he could unload Saul. “I don’t know where Tucci is. I’ve never met him, and no, I don’t work for him. He’s not high on my list, though.”

“You’re not a shifter.” Saul remained low in his seat, but his tone changed. He stared at Luke. “I can smell it. You’re not.”

“That’s how you know? My smell?” He’d showered that morning and put on antiperspirant. Hopefully, he didn’t stink.

“You’ve got a scent, yes. It’s not like a dirty smell. It’s just you, and my lion can tell. It’s what told me; you’re a safe person. Sometimes, my instincts have been off, but not this time. Most people freak out when the word shifter is used. You didn’t flinch.”

“I’m honored, but I’ve worked with shifters before. I never know what to expect with them, but I’m not scared, either.” He wouldn’t admit to his fear, though. For all he knew, Saul could snap and do something horrible to him. “My friends run the Sanctuary. They’ll help you as much as possible. As for the maybe-not-quite stolen truck, I should get that sorted out.” He should probably turn Saul in, too, but he’d worry about that later.

“I wasn’t lying. I didn’t steal it. The truck was given to me by the one human who actually believed I was a shifter.” Saul grasped Luke’s free hand. “I borrowed it because I needed to get away from the zoo. I had permission.” He faced Luke. “At the zoo was a keeper named Saul, and that was his truck. He didn’t want it, but he wanted to help me get away from Tucci. He saw me shift and didn’t flip out. He said shifters are natural creatures and should be respected. He helped me until the freak-out died down then he got me out of the zoo. He’s the reason I’m here and not in the enclosure or dead.”

“If I contact him, will he verify this information?” Luke asked. He turned back onto the Sanctuary lane and swiped his keycard in the reader. He wasn’t sure if he believed Saul—or whatever the shifter’s name happened to be—but he also wasn’t convinced the story was a lie.

“Yeah.” The shifter offered up a badge. “See this? This is his old one, but it’s got his information. I’m supposed to say I’m him if I get into trouble.” He pointed to the plastic card on the lanyard and sighed. “So you’ll help me?”

“John and Joe will wonder why I’m back here already.” Luke parked the car in front of the fountain. “Let’s go inside. You can tell them everything, and they’ll help you.”

“You’re not staying?”

Markas knows he can shift, but hasn’t yet. He’s fascinated by John and wants to shift in order to get to know the human better. But lions don’t last at the petting zoo past their third birthday. John’s breath clogged in his throat. He’d gotten three of the four lions out of the enclosure and into the adjacent farm, but Markas hadn’t made it past the hole in the metal fence. Fuck.

“Joe, I need your help. Now.” He didn’t wait for his brother to answer. “I’m getting the sheet and tossing him onto it. Not the best way to move a lion, but this one is a sweet boy, and he’s hurt. I can’t let the hunters have him.” Don’t let the bullet be in his chest or his head, he thought. Let them have hit him somewhere that’s not life-threatening.

“You tell me when to pull and I’ll do it.” Joe appeared at the hole. “I’ll keep watch.”

John scrambled around the cat, hefting the animal’s legs onto the sheet and then moving his upper body to the sheet as well. Gunfire rang out over his head, making him wince. He’d never been in combat and knew he wasn’t meant for a soldier’s life, but if he could save the beautiful animal, he’d take a few gunshots whizzing past his head.

Let’s just hope they don’t connect with me, too. “Pull. Joe, pull,” John shouted. With his brother’s help, John managed to get the cat to the hole in the fence.

“He’s heavy,” Joe groaned. “I’ve got him, but damn. What are you going to do with him? He’s been shot?”

“I know. I’ve got Willow Needs coming over. She’s a trained veterinarian.” John yanked one last time, getting the lion through the fence. Once they were all safe, he shoved the planks back into place. “There.” He turned his attention to Joe. “She’s been lobbying since high school to get this place shut down. She’s all onboard to help us.”

“Good,” Joe replied.

John checked the wound. Whoever had shot the cat had managed to hit the target but hadn’t buried the bullet deep. Still, the hole was high on the lion’s hip. They’d need to get him to the barn soon.

“I’ve got the others on the trailer. They went pretty easily.” Joe stood beside John. “Ready to put him in the truck?”

When John glanced up at his brother, Joe’s eyes were wide. “What?” John asked.

Joe opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before he spoke. “I don’t think we’ll need the trailer for him.”

John looked back at the covered-up hole. No one was trying to get through. “What is your problem?”

“Your lion is a guy.”

“What?” John stared at his brother. “Did you get hit on the head? He’s a lion.”

“Look.” Joe pointed to the big cat, except the cat wasn’t one any longer. Joe was right. A man lay crumpled against John’s hip.

John met his brother’s confused gaze. He had plenty of his own questions. Some of the lions at the petting zoo really were shifters. Dear God, they’d been bred so many times. It was possible some used for the canned hunts could’ve been shifters, too.

His stomach lurched.

“I’ve never seen one in person, but we’ve got a shifter.”

The right piece for their perfect triad seems to be the one man who doesn’t seem to fit at all.

Eli and Silas have done pretty much everything twins can do together within reason. They share lovers and are inseparable. Now, the lions want free. They want someone to be with both of them and can understand the dual sides to their collective nature. But the twins are scarred by their past. Eli uses his people skills to please and get by, while Silas takes the quieter, introverted and angry approach. Can these two find a perfect complement? Does that person even exist?

Owen Cantrell believes he’s not only worthy of the shifters, but he’s their missing piece. He’s human and hasn’t been around shifters, but he’s not afraid. What could go wrong?

When these three get together, there are plenty of sparks, but things can’t be perfect forever. The way Eli, Silas and Owen deal with their problems and everything thrown their way will prove if they aren’t meant to be or if they can go the distance.

“We’d like you to live here. Teach the shifters about being human—like manners, technology, how to exist outside of the Sanctuary, along with how to spot a group like Wet Dreams and how to run away. I think you’re what we need.” Markas leaned his elbows on the desk. “What do you think?”

None of what he’d been told was what he’d expected. They trusted him? Despite what he’d admitted and the very real possibility he’d truly try to fuck a shifter. He doubted Markas was telling the truth.

“You’ve been through a lot in your short life. I can’t imagine coming out. I was lucky. After I shifted, John accepted me. Our family of shifters is accepted here and I’d like them to be accepted in public, too.”

Owen nodded. He wasn’t the most socially savvy person, but he was willing to help. “What do you want me to do and when?”

“You’re welcome to move in as soon as you’d like. We’ve got plenty of room. Once you’re settled, I want you to choose a few shifters to work with. They’ll be your responsibility, but I’m sure they’ll all want you to pick them,” Markas said.

“Like one or two?”

“I’d say start with one. Don’t overwhelm yourself.”

“Then…okay.” He had to think this through. Too bad, he really wanted to accept and his mouth wasn’t working with his brain. “I’m game, but I need to get out of my lease.”

“Done.”

“What?”

Owen supposed Markas meant he’d help until the lease was up.

“Trust me.” Markas stood. “Let me introduce you around.” He rounded the desk. When Owen stood, Markas stopped. “But remember, we’re all watching you. If you lie or sell us out…I’ll know. If you think you’re a good double agent, you’re not. If you double cross any of us, I’ll unleash my lion on your ass. I’m not afraid, and my lion gives no fucks.”

Now for that Teaser!!

“You should trust me,” Owen said.

“Uh…why?” Eli shivered. The skittery feeling wasn’t like when he’d been at Wet Dreams and forced into being with humans. Still, he wasn’t sure. His lion paced. The cat had gone silent once Eli had been able to shift into human form back at the circus, and it hadn’t come forward much since he’d escaped. One time, he’d thought he’d met the right person, but the lion hadn’t even growled. But now, with Owen? The cat seemed to take notice.

“Because I won’t hurt you.” Owen frowned. “I don’t know what you’ve been through, but I promise, I’m not here to mess with your head.”

“Right.”

“Do you believe me?”

“No.” He couldn’t lie.

“Then maybe this will change your mind.” Owen embraced Eli.

Eli sucked in a ragged breath as Owen leaned forward. When Owen pressed his body to Eli’s and brushed his lips over Eli’s, Eli’s thoughts turned to mush. His lion roared. A kiss. Goddess, wow. Eli wasn’t being turned down. Owen was kissing him. Maybe, he was meant to experience deep love like he saw in the couples at the Sanctuary. Whoa.

Tuesday Teaser ~ Bonding with Ben by @MeganSlayer #mmromance #mm #shifters

TEASER TUESDAY BUTTON

bondingwithbenbookpageSometimes the biggest hurdle in life is accepting who you are and what you want.

Joe Dallas thought he’d escaped the draw of the shifters at the Sanctuary. He doesn’t mind. With his tendency to keep relationships simple, he doesn’t want to get involved with a lion shifter. Then there’s Ben. The quiet shifter piques Joe’s attention. When Joe accompanies Ben on a rescue mission, he realizes the attraction isn’t one-sided. But can a shifter and a human really make a relationship work? Joe isn’t sure.

Ben knows who he wants in his life and bed—Joe. The lion wants to bond with the human he desires. The difference in their species doesn’t bother him a bit. Will the shifter be able to convince Joe they have a future or will fear dominate and destroy the love before it can blossom?

Warning: Once you’re in the sight of this shifter, you may be the “mane” attraction. This lion doesn’t give up until he has his prey.

Now for that tease!!

What was it about Ben that kept Joe thinking about him? He closed his eyes and stood under the searing-hot spray. With other guys, Joe did the casual thing. Have a good time but no strings, so no one got hurt. Until now, that plan had worked. Right?

Kind of. Sure, he had nothing holding him down, but when he looked at John and Markas together, jealousy hit. He wanted that kind of devotion. Would he get it with Ben?

Ben was certainly different. He was innocent and deserved someone worthy of him. Joe wasn’t worthy of too much of anything. He’d had a little too much fun and broken a few too many hearts along the way. Ben needed true devotion and a good match.

Joe snorted. He was great as a reporter and nosy as hell, but he sucked at relationships. Ben deserved a partner, not a player.

Still, he liked Ben. He worried about the shifter and wanted him to be happy. Could Joe make Ben happy? Doubtful.

Joe opened his eyes and washed the cum from his body. He’d be a friend and help Ben find a suitable partner. No romantic entanglements—just friendship—even if it damn near killed him not to be the man in Ben’s arms and bed.

This was one situation he couldn’t screw up.

Wrapping Up and Moving On with @MeganSlayer #writing #thinking #debating ~ cross-posted

I’ve been thinking long and hard about what I wanted to write for this post. An end of the year wrap-up? Maybe a memorial for things lost this year? A plan for 2017? Lots comes to mind.

In the last few days, a lot has happened. Christmas! Hanukkah! Let’s not forget those. The time of joy and giving. Watching the wonder on the faces of those who received a gift–be it an actual item or an act of generosity. I’ll cherish that.

Now, I know. There has been some sadness. The passing of legends, almost legends and those we just plain love. Trust me. My heart breaks for them. I’ve loved Gene Wilder since the movie Willie Wonka scared the crap out of (I was convinced if I ate the chocolate, I’d end up in the TV, too…and yet I still ate the chocolate.) So many people. So many creative fires dying out.

But there are always going to be new ones. New fires we don’t even realize are there. Maybe you and I are the fires of tomorrow. Who knows.

I’m sad about the closing of a few of my publishers, too. I don’t like to speak ill of the closed, but I can honestly say, I didn’t have bad feelings towards those who closed or even bad experiences. Would I like to have the endings gone differently? Sure. Who wouldn’t? But I can’t say the experiences weren’t without merit. Maybe that was me still eating that chocolate.

I saw the shuttering of a few businesses I never thought would (Borders, Fictionwise, ARe) and are now gone. Poof! Okay, so not all were lost in 2016, but you get the idea. This biz is nutsy.

Back to the chocolate, but I’m not giving up on my love of writing. I don’t know if I’ll ever become that author who hits all of the lists and my book title is on the lips of every reader in the world. That doesn’t mean I won’t try. It doesn’t mean I won’t keep telling the stories I’ve been doing so for the last… golly, I’ve been writing since 2007 and published since 2009. I’m not one of the longer running authors in the biz, but that chocolate still sure tastes good.

So what is my plan for the next year? To keep writing. I’ve got books in the pipeline with multiple houses and fun things planned for the year. I’m not quitting. Not by a long shot and not when I still love the chocolate. Maybe one day I will be shrunken and land on the TV. Maybe not. Either way, I’m still going to keep slogging it out with the boys from Cedarwood, the shifters in the Sanctuary, the Battle Scarred paranormals and my Seeing Me male models. Why not? I get to play with male models in the morning, argue with everyday guys in Cedarwood in the afternoon, then wrestle with lion shifters at night. Sounds like a good gig to me.

What about you? What are your plans for 2017? Anything special? You know where I’ll be. Writing, reading and enjoying the ride.

Want something to warm up your winter? Try Reconnecting Christmas! Male models, a little angst and a happy ending (you didn’t think I’d keep the happy ending to myself, did you? *G*)
