I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again…with @MeganSlayer ~ A Journey of Writing, Rejection and Starting Over

paranormalromantics_websiteheader_940x376

This post has been cross-posted at Paranormal Romantics: http://paranormalromantics.blogspot.com/2017/05/i-get-knocked-down-but-i-get-up.html

When I sit down to write, I have a general plan for the story. General. I won’t say it’s ever a very well fleshed out outline. I’m not that organized. I have the idea and I’ll start plotting, but usually the characters start talking and I end up with chunks of dialogue within the outline. Now, I know there’s not a singular way to do an outline. It’s a matter of preference. But it can be kind of confusing to anyone reading my notes. Outline, outline, outline…DIALOGUE! Heh heh.

So I was asked to take part in an anthology. Sure. I had been debating doing this sub call anyhow and now that I was encouraged to take part, I set out to do it. I had this great idea. Planned the thing out. Like the whole thing. I even had chunks of dialogue. Like big chunks. I was jazzed. So jazzed…I might have written 2/3 of the story before I knew if it would fly for the call. I was excited. The story was flowing.

Then I heard from the powers that be. They didn’t want it. What? How…

Instead of getting upset or knocked down and not getting up again, I dusted myself off. Now if you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll see this isn’t the first time recently that I’ve been knocked down so to speak. It’s been kind of a rough couple of months.

I could’ve hidden for a while and said to hell with what I was doing. I could’ve gotten angry and lashed out. But what would getting mad do? Up my blood pressure and give me a headache. Hiding isn’t a bad idea, but I’m not the type to hide. The characters are there and when I can’t write, I’m not happy. I write because the characters demand to speak.

So, I dusted myself off and dove into a new outline. I saw a photo that inspired me and the topic happened to gel with the sub call. I wrote the plot and waited. It fit the call! Needless to say, plugging along and keeping going worked for me. I started over and I’m back to my happy place.

Has this ever happened to you? A thing you thought wouldn’t knock you down did, but you kept going? I’d love to hear about it. 🙂

Two hot rockers and one girl…what could go wrong?

Robbie thought when he formed his band he’d get the girls, the gigs and the money. He’s got the gigs, but the money is a little slower in coming. He’s also got more than a few secrets. He wants the band to succeed, but even more, he wants to find the one woman who can accept him—warts and all, but also with his best friend Dillon involved.

Dillon loves Robbie like a brother. Robbie’s his other half in the music world. He handles the words while Robbie writes the music for the band. But all the music in the world isn’t enough if they don’t have their perfect third—Jess. She hits all the right notes for him and Robbie. The only issue? She may not accept their love in return.

Jess has followed the band for years and worked her way up to selling their merchandise. She knows their music almost as well as they do, but doubts they’d want to be with her. She’s so unlike the other women they’ve had—she’s short, curvy and a purple-haired goth.  When Robbie and Dillon hang out with her after one of the gigs, she has a choice to make. Either head home and wonder or let go of her fears and give the two men of her dreams the chance to make her fantasies come to life.

“I’m not afraid of you,” Jess said. “But I know when I’m not wanted. I’m not pretty like Elaine or Carol and I’m not skinny, either. You need a girl who can act the part, not just be loyal.”

“Who says?” Dillon stood beside her. “You’re beautiful, unique, and one hell of a lot more real than those two ever were.”

“Right.” She rolled her eyes and shrugged away from Dillon.

Robbie snagged her in his arms. He pinned her between his body and Dillon’s, then cupped her face in his hands. “Tell me you don’t feel this. Show me the connection between us—the three of us—isn’t real. Convince me.”

She parted her lips and her eyes widened. “I can’t.” She tensed. “I feel it, but I’m scared. I’m not—”

He kissed her before she could finish her sentence. He knew what she was about to say. She wasn’t nearly as plain or boring as she wanted to believe. The passion was real and she’d deprived herself because she’d thought she wasn’t good enough? Bullshit.

Jess balled her hands on his chest, but didn’t push him away. He swallowed her whimpers. God, he loved the way she tasted. He nibbled on her bottom lip, then slid his tongue along hers. He’d never realized how good she felt in his arms.

“I want in on this,” Dillon said. “Don’t count me out.”

Robbie broke the kiss and rested his forehead on Jessica’s. “Honey, we’re not the best men for you. God knows, I’m a mess and Dillon’s not perfect, but we want you.”

“Yes.” Dillon nipped her neck and elicited a groan from her. He wound his arms around her waist.

She leaned back against Dillon’s chest. “I don’t understand. Why now? Why me?”

“Why not?” Dillon murmured. He resumed kissing her neck.

“Because we’ve wanted this for a long time, but kept it quiet. The exes were right to worry. We’ve had our eyes on you.” Robbie knew as soon as he’d said the last bit that his words were harsher than he’d meant.

“To say you had me?” Her cheeks flushed, but she didn’t pull away from Robbie or Dillon.

She wasn’t just another woman. “You make me sound horrible. Honey, you understand us,” Robbie said. He kissed her hard on the lips. “Because I’ve dreamed about you.”

When the Idea Strikes with @MeganSlayer #writing #ideas #creativity

Originally posted at the Romance Studio: https://wp.me/p8f7P3-1xh

Sometimes it seems like the ideas just won’t come. Sometimes they’re stuck. Like, really stuck. I can’t seem to work out what will happen next…at all. No matter what I do, I’m just…stuck.

That happened this past weekend. I’d worked on a story that’s been there the whole time, but just wasn’t ready yet. I had this character who has been difficult. I knew he wanted his story told, but he just wasn’t ready yet. So I thought he was. I started his story and had a word count limit. I knew I’d blow the limit. I tend to do that anyway. But this time, I knew it was going to happen. But I thought, hey, I can turn this into two stories.

Then the story fell apart. Kind of. It wasn’t going to work for the particular situation I was using it for. Now for some writers, this wouldn’t be a big deal. Write it anyway and publish it. But I don’t work that way. I want the story to be right. I don’t like to rush.

So then I was asked to take part in an anthology. I won’t lie. The previous story running into bumps threw my muse into a tailspin. I used to be able to work on two or more manuscripts at one time. Not any longer. I need to concentrate and for me the story works better when I’m focusing on one. So… The previous story wouldn’t work for the anthology, but I really wanted to take part.

What’s a writer to do?

I let my muse have a break. Yep. A big old break. The funny part is, when I let the muse off the hook, that’s when they (I’m convinced my muse is a couple) decided to cooperate. They came up with a fantastic idea. I had no clue they’d do that. Most of the time when I give them a break, they take forever to work with me.

But this post is about the idea striking. I set out to plot the story, since I had the start. But the more I wrote the outline, the more the actual story came forth. Fast and furious. I’ve been working on it ever since. I love when this happens. The story is there, it’s flowing and the idea is fresh. It makes me happy to write. I love to create. When I’m not writing, I’m not…me.

Does this happen to you? Have you ever had something not so fun turn into something fantastic? I’d love to hear about it.

Speaking of something not so fun turning into something pretty great, my upcoming release, Doc Cedarwood. Check it out!

Aiden watched Aaron leave Matt’s room and a pang of jealousy hit him. He’d just gotten to know Matt and the connection was real. Was Matt that kind of guy who made everyone feel invited? Was he the type to click easily? Aiden scrubbed the back of his hand across his mouth. Man, he was overthinking things. The situation with Matt was new and fragile. Suck it up and stop expecting something so fast. But could he listen to his own advice? He ducked into Matt’s room and hoped for the best.

“Hi.” Matt sat on the edge of the bed. He’d managed to put his jeans on and wrangled a button-down shirt over his shoulders. “I really don’t like this thing.” He waved his arm in the sling. “Motherfucker, that hurts.”

“Which is why you’re not supposed to.” Aiden helped him finish putting the shirt on. “Don’t do that again without help.”

“Then be my help.” He wriggled his eyebrows. “I don’t want to be snarled up in this sling. I like to move.”

“You’ll be able to move before you know it. It gets easier.” He stood beside the bed and folded his arms. He sounded like a damn greeting card. “You’re waiting on the paperwork?”

“Yeah. I’m glad to get rid of the IV. I hate that stuff. You said saline, but it could’ve had something else mixed in.” Matt shook his head. “When you know addicts, you vow not to be like them. I don’t mind a beer every so often, but never pharmaceuticals. If I can’t have control, I’m not doing it.”

“Makes sense, I suppose, but it wasn’t mixed with anything. You like pain but on your terms.” Aiden notched his chin in the air. “Have you ever considered getting implants? The discs or whatever? They give me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about them.”

“Wow. No.” Matt struggled to his feet, wobbled, then sat back down. “I like the art and the pain, but I’m not into dermal anything. I’m also not used to being upright. Wow.” He leveled his gaze at Aiden. “I can’t stay here. I need to get out.”

Aiden recognized the pleading in Matt’s voice and couldn’t argue. He believed the best healing took place when the patient was the most comfortable—and usually at home. “The attendant will be here in a few with a wheelchair.” He paused. “It shouldn’t be much longer.”

“Are you leaving?” Matt asked.

“Yeah, soon. I’m late for a nap.” He didn’t move. He had to deal with his twinge of jealousy concerning Aaron. “I saw your business partner came back. He’ll take you home, right?”

“Yeah.” Matt toyed with the edge of the sling. “Would…would you be interested in stopping by my place? Say it’s to check on me or because we’re friends and we want to talk. I don’t care. Just come by.”

“Aaron isn’t staying with you?” He’d hate to impose.

“He’d love to be, but I told him no.” Matt tipped his head. “What do you think?”

“I think you’re supposed to have someone staying with you for the first twenty-four hours in case you have complications. You should have Aaron sleep over for a precaution.” He hated arguing and encouraging Matt to be with Aaron.

“Then you come over. We’ll talk more and you can watch me all you want. I’d planned on asking you to take me home so we could get to know each other better.” Matt reached for Aiden. “It’s forward and pushy, but it feels right to ask you.”

Sometimes switching things up really does mean getting the guy.

Allan Clark thought his life as a wide receiver for the Wildcats was over the moment he was told he’d be the new punt returner. He’d thought he didn’t want to be a special teams player. He’d rather have the limelight. But once he starts returning punts, he realizes this was where he should’ve been all along. Speaking of perks, he now gets to spend time with the sexy kicker, Tyler Leigh. Maybe this switch is the best thing that could’ve happened to him.

Unlike Allan, Tyler isn’t planning on going into the draft or playing football for the rest of his life. He’s got other plans, though a side trip in the sheets with Allan isn’t off his radar. He’s wanted Allan since he joined the team. But Tyler’s got baggage and an overzealous ex-boyfriend hell-bent on making his life miserable. With Allan, he sees a bright spot.

Will these two seeming opposites leave their desires on the field, or will they find common ground together and score?

“Fuck,” Allan muttered. He tipped his head back and closed his eyes. “Taste me. Put my cock in that hot mouth.”

“I will.” Tyler licked a path of fire along Allan’s throat.

The scent of Tyler’s cologne curled around Allan’s nose. He breathed in the decadent scent and palmed the back of Tyler’s head. He’d never been with a bald man, but there were definite plusses. Allan loved the feel of Tyler’s smooth skin under his hand as well as his hot tongue on his throat.

Allan licked his lips, tasting Tyler’s kiss. Mint lingered and tingled on his lips and Tyler’s muffled moans rang in his ears.

“Ty.” He whispered Tyler’s name and nudged his lover down his body. Having his neck kissed was great but he wanted more.

Tyler didn’t disappoint. He nipped and sucked his way along Allan’s chest, pausing at Allan’s nipples. He pinched one tight bud between his fingers and the other between his teeth.

“Shit,” Allan blurted. He couldn’t remember the last time a lover had him reduced to one-word responses. His arms refused to cooperate and he plopped backward onto the bed.

“Better.” Tyler raked his teeth over Allan’s lower belly. “Where do you want me?”

“Everywhere.” Allan directed Tyler to his groin. He needed Tyler’s mouth around his cock. Heat enveloped him, making rational thought almost impossible.

“I can do that.” Tyler flatted his tongue along the blunt head of Allan’s erection. “But I want you to watch.” He tossed pillows at Allan. “Sit up. Watch.”

“I’m pregnant.” The words tumbled out too fast, and the tears slipped down her cheeks even faster. “Trip will kill me. He told me not to get involved with Tate, and he’s not going to let me live this down.”

“Because of an accident?” Chris stood at his full height, then wrapped both arms around her. “He’s not that much of an ass.”

“Have you met him? He’s so overprotective, it’s crazy.” She wiped her cheeks and gasped. From her head to her toes, she trembled. Nothing cut her deeper than having to talk to her brother.

“I’m pretty overprotective, too.” He tipped her chin, looking her in the eye. “I’ll help you.”

“Why? You’re my friend, sure, but you’ve got a girlfriend. Won’t Missy be upset?”

“Missy is my sister. You saw her here at the club because she wanted to dance and meet people. But mostly so I could keep an eye on her.” He rested his forehead on hers. “I’m not afraid of your brother. He’s big and loud, but he doesn’t scare me.”

“You’re nuts.” He had to be. They knew each other from the club and talked from time to time, but to jump in and help her during her time of need? Come on. “I’ll just tell Trip. What’s the worst he can do? Disown me?” She’d gotten herself into the predicament, she’d get herself out.

“People have called me all sorts of things, but that’s the first time someone called me nuts.” He rubbed her shoulders. “What do you want to do?”

“He’ll kill me. I’m the baby. I’m not allowed to screw up. If I tell him it’s Tate’s… At least he likes you.”

“Whatever you want to tell him, I’ll back you up. How about we’ve been dating for two months and we’ve had a happy accident?”

“You’d do that for me?”

“Lace, I already like you. Maybe this is our chance to see if this friendship we share is meant to be something more.”

“You’re a crazy knight in shining armor.” She threw her arms around his neck and squeezed him tight. Maybe they could be more.
