Scarred Hearts, #1

Publisher: Megan Slayer

The objective—keep her safe. No one said anything about falling in love.

All she wanted was a pint of ice cream, not to be a witness to a double murder. Good thing Emma’s got not one, but two, sexy men willing to keep her safe. As long as she can keep her hands to herself.

Sam’s mission? To find the man responsible for the murder. He’s not going to rest until the streets are safe, even if it means having his best friend guard his best girl. It’s the best option, right?

Quint never dreamed he’d be attracted to his best friend’s wife…and his best friend. He’s got to keep his hands to himself all while figuring out what he wants from life, even if love equals Emma and Sam in Quint’s bed.

Is love in the cards or are they going to go up in flames before they get started?

Six months of waiting in hiding hadn’t eased her mind. Living in the gated community helped, but if someone wanted her dead, it would happen. Gates and armed guards didn’t stand a chance against a machine gun or whatever served as Morales’ weapon of choice. He wanted her to keep quiet, no matter what.

No toys or quickies with Quint would erase her pain. “Catch him so it’s all over.” Emma blinked back tears of frustration. “I want my life back.”

She touched the picture of Sam on the counter. Her heart squeezed in her chest. He didn’t have to go to the lengths he’d gone to for her. I won’t risk losing you. She sighed. What if she lost him in the process?

“I miss him, too.” Quint placed his hand on hers.

Emma bumped shoulders with him and wiped her cheeks. “I know. I’m glad you’re here. I’d be stir crazy alone.”

“Won’t be long, now.” He kissed her temple. “Promise.”

The words failed to comfort her. “If I’m not safe in the Leatherwoods, I’m not safe anywhere. Do you hear that, Quint? I’m done.” She shoved the newspaper into the recycle bin and headed to the refrigerator. Emma withdrew a half-empty bottle of rose wine. “If I want to sip a glass of wine on my balcony, then by God, I should be able to.” She nodded to herself and poured a generous amount into a wine goblet. “You can watch for all I care. I want to have a normal life again.”

She balanced the wine glass in her fingers and picked up a lighter for the citronella candles and her book from the table. She shoved the lighter in her back pocket and stuck her book under her free arm. Emma crossed the room and stepped through the sliding doors. The potted pansies fluttered in the slight wind. She dropped the book on the lounger and left the wine glass on the ground beside the chair.

“Seems like a nice time to take in some afternoon sun.” Shielding her eyes with her hand, she glanced around at the neighboring terraces. For a humid late July afternoon, no one seemed to be home and that suited her fine. “Looks like we’re alone, anyway.”

“You try my patience,” Quint growled. He plopped down onto the balcony railing. “Anyone with a good shot could take your ass out right now. Why are you chancing it?”

“I’m not chancing anything with you standing there ready to take the bullet,” Emma snorted. Six months of having someone watching her managed to kill her modesty. Sure, time spent in her bedroom meant time alone. Anywhere else in the apartment gave Quint ample view of what she did. Most of the time his presence didn’t bother her. He was Sam’s best friend. They shared everything—except her. So she enjoyed strolling to the kitchenette every once in a while in the nude? Quint, being the consummate good guy with a foul mouth, never acted on impulse. Sam alluded to wanting a threesome with her and Quint. Based on Quint’s reactions, she doubted the event would happen—the talk needed to evolve into action.

Whatever.

“I’m going to immerse myself in a book.”

I want to belong here. Tyrone Zade shook his head. No, he wanted to belong to someone at Club Desire. He wiped his hands on the legs of his leather pants and blew out a long breath. He’d loved coming to the club each of the four times he’d visited. He knew what he liked and what he wanted to do when he got there. No names or major details—just playing. Most of all, no sex.

He’d adhered to his rules for the last four months and kept his visits to once every four weeks, coinciding with when he’d returned to town between games. Talking to anyone about his job wasn’t an option. He wanted to keep his career as the first baseman for the Red Devils separate from his need to be spanked and tied down. Hell, until he’d spoken to Rocke Houseman, he hadn’t felt confident enough to visit the club in the first place. Once he’d realized people would do what he needed and keep quiet, he’d known he had to go to Club Desire.

Ty straightened his shoulders. He’d paid his admittance for tonight’s special event. According to the signs, the club was throwing a Raining Men party. He’d seen the advertisements for the recurring bash a more than once but had never been in town at the right time. Tonight was perfect for a lot of things, especially meeting his Dom outside of a scene.

He stepped into the main playroom and scoped out the situation. People milled around, watching porn movies being projected onto the walls. On the main floor, three couples were in the midst of sex acts. Doms, some he recognized and others he didn’t, orchestrated a few of the scenes along the edge of the space. He snorted. He wasn’t sure why he’d expected to see a few women. Not tonight. Raining Men must’ve been aimed strictly at gay men.

Standing along the edge of the room was an option, but not a good one. If a Dom spotted him and decided he should be part of a scene, Ty would have to comply. He wasn’t collared by anyone—not yet. He wanted his Dom, Leo, to do it, but they hadn’t spent enough time together for such a situation to take place.

Ty toyed with the black band around his wrist. On the baseball field, he knew just what to do. Get out there and play. But in the club, his confidence melted. Rocke had mentioned settling down, but part of Ty wanted to stay free. Why tie himself down to one guy, especially when he wasn’t ready for the entire baseball league to know he was gay? And what if he couldn’t find someone he wanted to settle down with? Why choose someone who might be only “good enough”? Or had he set his standards too high?

God, he’d crawled too far into his own head again. He was here to have fun. If he ran into Leo, good, but right now, he just wanted to dance and let loose for a little while.

Rocke strolled past him and grinned. “Get out there. You paid the hundred bucks. Get your money’s worth.” He headed over to two men at the bar.

Ty sighed. He’d come to the event to hook up with Leo and he’d never get anywhere standing along the edge. What was wrong with joining a group already together? Or finding someone for the night? Because they weren’t Leo. But Leo probably didn’t see him as anything other than another random sub.

He noticed a group of four men gathered on the couch. Glitter billowed around the room, except for where these guys were knotted together.

“Care to dance?” A man with a harness across his chest and a tiny g-string writhed beside Ty. “You want to. Come on before one of the Doms snaps you up.”

Ty didn’t argue as the guy pulled him into the middle of the room. Throbbing techno music nearly blotted out what the man said, but Ty wasn’t paying attention. He’d noticed one of the individuals on the couch—Leo.

This week’s words are X-ray, fire, style, fate, wire. Here we go.

He should’ve known the hand of fate would swat at him, cat-like that evening. He should’ve known that wire wouldn’t be something simple or unattached. But he’d grabbed it–just his style. He saw the wire, thought it was a vine and pulled. Was it unattached? No. The stupid wire HAD to be part of the cable lines and tangled up with other wires. What did he know about wires? What did he know about electricity? Or projectile objects… The wire moved, the sparks shot out of the empty socket, then the rake flew in the explosion and all of the sudden, his lights went out.

He sat on the gurney and groaned. Not only had the house caught fire from him yanking that wire, but now he needed an X-ray. He’d managed to impale himself with the heavy tines of the garden rake. The cable wire had been tangled up with a fallen electrical wire and now he had no house, a bloodied leg and no insurance.

Go figure.

Thursday Flicks with @meganslayer ~ Reign Over Me #movies #reviews

I like movies where comedians show they’re ready for dramatic roles, but I had a hard time with this movie. I couldn’t get into the almost Bob Dylan-esque way Adam Sandler played his character. I get that he was traumatized and he might have had some other issues, but the violence he leapt to so fast was too much. I wanted him to warm to Don Cheadle’s character and reconnect, not hit him. Maybe this movie is for some people, but it wasn’t for me.

A man who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate. Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief.

My Greatest Strength with @meganslayer #strength #deepthoughts

Find the other posts right here: http://www.longandshortreviews.com/

I saw the topic this week and it gave me pause. Those who know me would probably say I’m not the most…anything. I have some stuff going for me, but I’m not the most organized or the most on the ball with some stuff. I’m not the tallest or the thinnest. I’m not the smartest by a long shot (I’ve met many a math problem that I didn’t like). So trying to figure out what my strength would be was a tad difficult.

At one time, my greatest strength was recalling music and lyrics – like getting a line from a song and know EXACTLY which song it was. Like knowing that “ain’t no use in complainin’, when you’ve got a job to do” is from Bryan Adams’ Summer of Sixty-Nine. Or that “Now, don’t hang on, Nothin’ lasts forever but the earth and sky” is from Dust in the Wind by Kansas. Give me those lines and I could recall the song. Could probably sing most of the dang thing, too. There was one night when I had the sax line from Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty stuck in my head. Took me forever to sing the whole song (there’s a lot of lyrics) to get to the chorus to realize it was Baker Street. Don’t believe me? Never heard of it? Here’s the youtube to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j7uAimpx3k But I finally remembered it. At one time, there was an email going around…must’ve been fifteen years ago at least, where it was all song lyrics and you were supposed to figure out which one was which. The one I got that no one else did was “Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air”. Don’t know it? Do you? Hotel California by the Eagles. I might have been raised on the classics (as Dad would call them). And at one point, we didn’t have TV (it broke and we didn’t have the money to fix it so we had the stereo aka record player and Fish TV. Don’t ask…)

But I don’t think this is my greatest strength any longer. I don’t know any of the current music. Wouldn’t know it if I had to remember it.

My greatest strength would be worry. Yep. I’m a born worrier. Call it the mom in me, but it’s my strength to worry. What could the dog get into? (more than I ever thought possible.) What didn’t I pick up that the dog will find to get into? (She got a hold of a sharpie marker and chewed it – didn’t eat it – but decorated her dog be with it.) Will the dog who was here first get along with the new dog for the first time be left alone together? (Not sure on this one. We’ve only had the new dog for just under two weeks…He had his first accident last night, so the jury is still out.) Will the tot make it to school and not end up in the ditch? (So far, he’s been fine, but he did get into deep snow with the car and had to get pulled out). Will DH make it home in the snowstorm rather than land in the ditch? (He landed in the ditch…go figure) Will the stupid dryer blow up and catch (minor) fire while I’m doing laundry? (answer is yes, it did.) I have the notion that I have to watch the Tot leave for school each morning. If I don’t watch him go down the driveway, something bad will happen to him. Now, something bad could happen no matter what I do, but it oddly makes me feel better to watch him. I swear, it’s that mom thing and my being a born worrier.

It’s a talent.

What about you? What’s your greatest strength? I’d love to know. 🙂

Matt busied himself with straightening the counter space and trying not to watch Jacen. Fuck. How could he not? The man featured in his dreams and had become his favorite spank bank material. He swept his gaze over Jacen. The denim shorts hugged his hips and accentuated the strength in his legs. Jacen rubbed the back of his neck with his fingers and flexed his upper body.

Jesus. Was Jacen trying to turn him on? If so, he’d accomplished his mission. Matt plopped onto the stool and pressed his knees together. Blood rushed to his cock and his mouth watered. Just a few touches. Kisses. He didn’t want much. Really.

“Mother fucker.” Jacen whipped around and held his phone in a white-knuckled grasp as he strode back to the desk. “He’s a piece of shit. Where are those peas?”

Matt offered up the bag. “Whoever it is, I hope you lit into him.” He shut the laptop down, then moved the device to the lower portion of the counter. “Better pick up your key before you forget.” He slid the card across to Jacen. “Have a good night…well, a better one than you’ve had so far.”

“Huh?” Jacen glared at Matt and plunked the bag back onto his bruise. “Are you here all night? I thought Cady hired on people to work the desk so you and her weren’t stuck.”

“She did, but this is my night. I have to earn my keep somehow.” He grinned to hide his displeasure. “I can’t feed my music and running habits without some source of income.”

Jacen tucked his phone into his pocket and lingered at the counter. “Want some company? I came here to work on music, yeah, but that wasn’t the only reason.” He offered up the bag. “I’ve melted this.”

“I’ll stick it back in the freezer. No problem.” He gripped the melting frozen food. “Stick around a moment in case anyone comes in and I’ll put it back.” He left Jacen alone long enough to put the peas in the fridge. He’d probably make them for lunch the next day instead of wasting them. When he returned, Jacen had rounded the counter.

“All good?” Jacen asked.

“I’ve got lunch for tomorrow.” He tensed. “Thanks for holding down the fort.” He expected Jacen to leave, but instead, he crept closer to Matt.

“I didn’t just return for Rory and the music. I came here for you, too.”

“Me?” He frowned. “What?” He had to be hearing Jacen wrong. No way Jacen meant that.

“Uh, yeah. You.”

“Sir?” She rested her hands on her hips but held onto the card. “Question.”

Ryder froze, then turned around. His eyes widened. “You’re topless.”

“You told me to disrobe.” She tipped her head. “May I pull my hair back?”

“Of course.” He nodded. “I want you to be comfortable.”

“Good.” She turned her attention to removing the rest of her clothes. Another thought occurred to her. “What about shoes? Do you want me in heels? Boots?”

“Bare is fine.” He held out his hand. “Do you have the elastic—or clips—for your hair?”

“Oh!” She offered up the black band.

He stood behind her and gathered her hair at the crown of her head. “Tell me if this hurts.”

“I get off on the pain,” she said. A laugh bubbled in her throat. At least he’d made her feel comfortable. “You’re fine.”

“Good.”

She bit back a moan. She loved having her hair played with. When a man ran his fingers through the long strands and massaged her scalp, the motions sent her into another orbit. She swayed then righted herself. “Thank you, Sir.”

“You’re welcome.” He stood before her again. His gaze slid up and down her body. “What’s the card?”

“That’s how I get into the office. I usually keep it in my bra, but since I don’t have one on…” She hesitated. “Would you keep it for me? On your person? It’s very important. I don’t like to have it out of my sight.”

“Of course.” He tucked the card into his front pocket. “Won’t leave here until you ask for it.”

“Thank you.” Relief washed over her. She clasped her hands behind her and widened her stance a bit. Did she measure up? Chilly air caressed her body. Electricity zapped her from within.

“You’re pierced.” He tapped her nipple. “What other surprises do you have?”

“I guess you’ll have to find out when we play.”

“I don’t know,” Austin called. “I think we need a couple of selfie ones.”

She froze. Selfie ones. Yeah, a personal shot would be good. She handed her phone to him without looking back at him. “Go for it.”

“Thank you.”

She didn’t bother to watch. She’d seen him photograph himself plenty of times. He always managed to take the best shots and never had his hair out of place or his eyes funny. When she tried to take selfies, she looked ridiculous.

“I did a couple.” Austin eased up beside her and draped his arm around her shoulders. “Smile.”

When she glanced up, he snapped a photo.

“Why did you do that?” she asked and reached for the phone.

“Because you’re adorable.” He kissed her temple and took another picture. “And I love to irritate you.” He kept her phone and strolled away from her. “Aura is going to love what you’re doing. They’re lucky we’re doing this.”

“Correction. They asked specifically for you. I got to do this because they had to take me.” She tucked the notebook back in her bag and slid the memory card from her camera. “Want me to take off? You’ve probably got a girlfriend dying to spend the night with you.”

Austin groaned and took the memory card from her hands. He led her across the room to the bed and tugged her down beside him. “You make me sound like I can’t keep my dick in my pants.”

She shrugged, not wanting to argue with him. Austin liked to date and loved to tell her about his dates. “You like all the girls you’re with, then you sleep with them and the relationship falls apart. I don’t know if the shine is gone or your attention span is that small, but you can’t commit.”

“You sound like Serena.”

“I’ve been witness to almost all of your relationships since college.” She stood, but he tugged her back onto the bed. “Austin, stop playing with my head, okay?”

“No.” He grabbed the remote and switched on the television. “How can I stop playing with your head? I invited you to stay the night with me in a hotel room. I never said we had to fuck or that I expected something from you. The idea of the photos was your idea—a great one at that—but I’m just going along. Relax and let me give you a great night.”

She scrubbed both hands over her face again and sighed. Being alone with him wasn’t an awful idea. She’d fallen hard for Austin so many times. At least this time she had photos for later. When he moved on and found the woman of his dreams, she’d have a reminder of the man who owned her heart.

“Well?” He met her gaze and grinned. “What do you think?”

“Sure.” What else did she have to lose?

The figure turned around and she gasped. The man from the dock. He grinned and shrugged. “I believe this is called stealing, love.” He grasped her jewelry box from the mantle and tucked it into his large coat.

“Not my things you won’t.” She surged toward him and swung. Instead of connecting with his face, like she’d planned, she bounced her fist off his shoulder. Drat. Her defensive move hadn’t stopped him. Instead, he laughed, which infuriated her more. “Put those down and leave my room. Who do you think you are? You’re not entitled to my things.”

“Darling, I don’t want your jewelry.” He placed the box back on the mantle. “I came here for something else. You.”

Killian Thomas watched the minx squirm. He’d knocked her for a loop by admitting the truth. Her dark eyebrows knotted as she glared at him.

“Why would you be here for me?” She gripped the front of her coat. “I’m not anyone important.”

“I suppose you’re going to tell me I’m wasting my time.” He stalked toward her, capturing her in his arms and pinning her between his body and the wall. “Sarah, love, I’m a pirate and I’ve come to collect my booty.”

“Me?” she squeaked.

“There aren’t any other eligible, beautiful women on board.” He shouldn’t have let that slip—never tell the person you’re kidnapping that you’re attracted to them. He turned her around in his arms and clamped one hand over her mouth. “I bet your father would pay a hefty price to get you back, wouldn’t he?”

She nodded and dug her teeth into his finger. Ah, the minx wanted to play dirty. He hauled her tight to his body, pressing his growing erection into her backside. “This isn’t the time for games. You and I are going to go outside where my ship is waiting. My men have overtaken the crew of this ship. If you scream, I’ll whip your ass. Understand me?”

She froze again, but allowed him to move her forward. He hated to threaten her with something he’d never do—intentionally hurt a woman—but desperate times called for desperate measures. Killian slipped one arm around her waist, keeping her close.

“Say anything and I’ll lock you in my quarters.” Killian moved his hand, but kept her firmly in his grasp. He nodded to Andrews, his first mate. “We’ve got our cargo. Let’s move.”

Gunfire rang out around him as he muscled Sarah onto his small boat. She wobbled a couple of times on the narrow gangplank between the ships, but unlike most of his crew, she managed. She fought him, sending the smaller boat teetering.

“Hold still or I’ll use manacles on you,” Killian snapped. He turned his attention to his cohort. “Go.”

Andrews furiously rowed the life boat away from the massive yacht. He cackled a few times as they pulled away.  Thankfully, Sarah stopped thrashing.

“You can’t take her,” one of the men screamed from the luxury ship. “Pirates!”

“What will you do about it?” Killian volleyed back. “You’ll storm my ship? Not a chance. Andrews, full speed ahead.” He thrust Sarah to the floor until they were out of range of the bullets. Once they reached his stolen yacht, he snatched her from the soggy planks of the smaller boat. He didn’t give her time to think as he dragged her to the backside of the ship. From the moment he spotted her on the docks a month before, he knew he needed Sarah. She made his heart sing in ways he thought impossible.

“These are my quarters.” He opened the door to his private rooms. “Wait here.”

“But I didn’t say anything,” she protested. Some of the pins had fallen from her hair and two dark chocolate colored tendrils slipped over her shoulders. To other men, she might have looked disheveled. In his eyes, she embodied beauty, strength and fire.

“Very true, but your crew wishes me dead. I’d rather you lived as well.”

“They wouldn’t want me dead if you’d stayed on your boat and left me alone.” She attempted to tuck her hair back into the messy bun.

“Love, I’m wanted in many places for many things. None of those heists mattered compared to having you.”

It’s time for the Friday Five writing prompt. This week’s words are: impound, partner, lip, knowledge and full.

Who knew I’d meet the man of my dreams and all because I wanted to get plump lips? Okay, so it sounds strange. I mean, plump lips? I might sound vain. I am, a little. I wanted to look good.

I went to the clinic because I’d heard the doctor had a great formula for full, luscious lips. All you had to do was set an appointment and show up, then he’d do the rest. There wasn’t a lot of information on what the doctor did, so I didn’t have a lot of knowledge, but I had drive. I know, you’re probably thinking this should’ve been a red flag. It was, but it wasn’t. I wanted that look so bad that I ignored common sense.

So I got there and parked, then went into the clinic. The doctor wasn’t there, but his partner was. Dr. Skolnick looked at me and asked what I was doing there. He said there was nothing wrong with me and I didn’t need filler. The more he talked to me, the more I kind of liked it. He wasn’t condescending, but honest. He managed to convince me not to get the enhancement.

When I left the office, the car next to mine had a boot on it and the police officer stood beside the fender. I asked him what was going on and was I about to be impounded, too?

When the cop met my gaze, I knew exactly who he was–Del Navarre, the guy I’d crushed on in college. He smiled. “Miss Dixie McClain, what are you doing here?’

“I thought I’d get a filler, but the doctor talked me out of it. I’m glad he did.” If he hadn’t, I ‘d still be inside and not out here talking to Del. “Why are you impounding that car?”

“I can’t discuss an open case, but suffice it to say you’re smart for leaving the clinic. Not everything is above board.” Del sighed. “I need to take care of this, but would you want to meet for coffee later?” He offered her his card. “Call me?”

“You bet I will.” I couldn’t believe it. He’d given me his number.

“I wanted to ask you out back in college, but you seemed so shy.” He winked. “Call me.”

“I will.” I climbed behind the wheel of my car and left. My heart lightened. I managed not to get my car impounded, not to get injections from a doctor who didn’t appear to be doing something legal and reconnected with Del. Life has it’s quirks, but I appreciate them.

Oh, did I mention, Del and I have been dating now for a year? It really was our second chance love!
