Trad, Indie, Hybrid…Which Should I Be? with @Meganslayer #authors #hybrid #indie #traditional #authortalk

Underwoodfive1

So what am I?

Hybrid.

I never thought I’d be a hybrid author. I was determined to go Traditional or nothing, but then a couple of my pubs closed and it was crushing. I thought these were my places to be…and they’re gone. So some of my work I opted to self-publish.

It’s been nice to have publishers still, but also nice to have print copies I’ve got control over in my hands. There’s nothing like holding your own book in your hands that you helped create. So, I’m still with publishers because I like the safety of being there, but I like having some control over my work, too.

One of the bad things about being a hybrid published author is the cost. When you’re with a publisher, they handle the costs. You write, do the edits and get the art, but they pay for it. With self-publishing, you have to foot the bill for that all. It’s a push to promote more to recoup what you put into the cost, but it’s not easy if you don’t have a lot of startup cash.

Still, I like being a little of both. Kind of reminds me of that old Osmonds song…

I will make him notice me. Anissa adjusted her dress. The cherry-red halter frock hung on her thin frame. So much for the correct fit. She sighed. No matter what she did, she couldn’t put on weight. She debated what to add to improve her figure. If she wore the leather jacket, she’d appear edgy. The clunky boots helped increase her height, so she was fine there. But her bust… drat. She peered down at her chest. A wave of nausea hit her as she thought about her dating past. Guys didn’t want to date a woman with a flat chest — or so they’d told her.

She spied the gel bra cups she’d bought during her last trip to the fabric store. If she had boobs, maybe the guy of her dreams would finally notice her. He had to.

Anissa stuffed the chilly padding beneath the cups of her dress. Her boobs looked huge. Instead of the burst of confidence she’d expected, she hated her reflection in the mirror. The additions didn’t fit her frame. But she had a date and no choice but to do her best to entice him. If fake boobs worked, then fine. She’d take her chances.

She donned the jacket, then grabbed her purse and hurried downstairs.

Kam stood in the foyer. He wore the same battered leather jacket, faded jeans and dark sunglasses as he always did. He touched his earpiece. “In position.”

Her heart fluttered. Kameron Stone personified sex in human form. Her nipples ached, and she pressed her knees together. She’d never been with a man and wanted Kam to be her first. If she had her way, he’d be her only.

Would he fuck her?

Better yet, would he love her the way she loved him?

“I have the package,” Kam said. “Preparing to leave.”

She frowned. The package. She didn’t have the honor of being referred to by her name. Gaining his attention wasn’t going to be easy. “I’m ready.”

Kam nodded. “This way, Ms. Dunn.”

“Anissa.” He’d used her last name. Dang it. She’d pleaded with him so many times to call her by her first name. Ms. Dunn was her mother. She was just Anissa.

“Ms. Dunn.” Kam escorted her to the front porch, then down the steps. He opened the passenger door of the limo. “After you.”

“Thanks.” She couldn’t leave the house without her trusty bodyguard, Kam. She settled on the seat and folded her hands on her lap. Kam would do anything to protect her, and she trusted him, but she was twenty-one and her father needed to put some faith in her. He’d sheltered her from everything. She didn’t resent him for trying — when she turned twenty-five, she’d come into a hefty sum of cash via the trust her mother had left her, but still. She’d gone to an all-girls college, a private all-girls high school and never spent more than a few hours on her own. She crossed her legs, and her skirt rode high on her leg. Did Kam notice? Did he care?

She swept her gaze over him as he sat beside her. Strong and silent. He wore his clothes like a second skin, could eviscerate anyone who tried to get too close, but Kam said so little. Half the time she had no idea if he listened to her. Knowing him, he tuned her out.

“Kam?” She shifted in her seat to face him. Her skirt rode higher. He didn’t pay her any attention, which rankled her. “Kameron.”

“Ms. Dunn.” He seemed to stare straight ahead.

She whipped out her phone. She couldn’t go through with the date. Not now. She sent a text to the driver, requesting he stay in the driveway. She’d sent the itinerary to the security team but saw no point in leaving the house. Kam wasn’t paying attention to her — not in the way she wanted. He didn’t seem to care.

She sighed. According to the magazines she’d bought, her college roommate and the dirty movies she’d watched in the middle of the night, she had to be aggressive and demand what she wanted. Sure… she could be aggressive. She could demand his attention. But she wasn’t sure how.

Anissa switched seats to face Kam. The car rolled to a stop, most likely in front of the house. She parted her legs and leaned back. “Kam.”

If he looked at her, she couldn’t tell.

“Ms. Dunn?” Kam tensed, and the muscle in his jaw twitched. “Are you okay?”

Nope. He hadn’t noticed her lousy attempts to entice him.

“I’m fine,” she mumbled. What a liar…”I’d like to talk to you.”

After the Con…the FanGirl Moment with @meganslayer #meganslayer #fangirl #writers #convention #RAGT18

RAGT-Share-Graphic-2018

I have a confession. I’m a terrible fangirl. Really. I’m a writer and a voracious reader. I’m a sucker for a hot cover, too. But getting up the nerve to talk to those authors I love…that’s a challenge.

Cheryl Dragon is one of my favorite authors. So is Jocie McKade. The nice thing about them is I’m already friends with them, so talking to them is easy.

I love Morgan Malone and Gracie Guy, too. I’m friends with them, so that’s not a hardship to talk to them, either.

Now, don’t get the wrong idea. When I say hardship, I don’t mean it’s literally impossible or negative to speak to some authors. I don’t mean that at all. I mean, it’s hard for me to gather up the pluck to say, hi, I’m a sucker for your books. Silly, right? I want to hear people like my books, why wouldn’t others want to know I’ve enjoyed theirs?

I hate sounding ridiculous.

But this year, I went out of my comfort zone. I knew Ella Quinn would be at the event. I’ve had her on my blog for ages and loved her books for just as long. I wanted to say thank you for writing those books and put a face to the name, since she’d been on my blog.

I got my chance. Actually, I got to meet her and Jade Lee. I’ve loved Jade Lee’s dressmaker series since the first book. But Ella Quinn is a nice, sweet, soft-spoken lady. It was a great honor to meet her and I don’t think I sounded silly. There’s no guarantee I didn’t, but I hope I didn’t. I’m glad to call her a friend.

That’s one of the great things about #RAGT18. You can arrive feeling alone and leave with a whole slew of new friends. You’re not alone. I started going as a reader and now… well, I’m still a reader, but I put together a few choice words from time to time.

More on the con later. Promise.

After the Con… with @meganslayer #convention #work #writing #friends

2017 RAGT Author

Every year in June, I have the opportunity to attend a great event. I love going to the Reader and Author Get Together (#RAGT18). This is my time to have writer-girl time. I get to fangirl. I get to just be an author for a little while.

I’m guessing you’re wondering what I mean by just being an author time. Here’s the thing… when I’m at home and writing on my side of my laptop, it’s me and the computer. I know I have fans. I know I have readers. That’s not me being full of myself. You email me and tell me you’re reading. I meet readers who tell me they like my work.

But when I’m at the con, I get to be an author. I get to be me. I get to meet the readers, talk about my books and even drop a new one. That’ll be in a later post. Trust me. It’s coming.

I get to think about writing, talk about writing and not have to deal with the unglamorous part of my life–pets who leave little messes, ferrying kids, paying bills and being a life partner. I don’t dislike those things. I’m a happy mom, wife and pet parent. But sometimes it’s nice to be recognized for being an author.

That’s part of the fun of the event.

I’ll have more this week. There was so much that went on at the event, it’s hard to cover it in one post.

Later, tater.

Just a few more movies and he’d be done. Kris Hunter curled the pages of the script in both hands. A dull ache started behind his eyes. He’d become popular in the adult film industry but desperately wanted to get out. Starring in porn paid the bills, but didn’t soothe his primal need to create. Shouting ‘take that cock up your ass now’ got old after a while.

He raked his fingers through his hair and read through his lines again. There wasn’t much to the script. A few lines about getting to know his playmate, then naked time. God. He’d been asked to star in another first experience flick. He should’ve known better.

If he wanted to get out of the business, he’d have to star in a few more films and bank up the rest of the money he needed. Time to get his head into the game.

“It’s your first time? A sexy man like you? Can’t be.”

Kris nodded. He needed to get into the headspace of a guy who wanted to hook up with a younger man. Gag. At twenty-seven, he wasn’t that fucking old. Still, he needed the money to fund his dream. He formed an image of his costar in his mind. Although he wasn’t attracted to the other performer, Kris did his best to act the part.

“That’s right,” Kris murmured. “You know how to kiss.”

His costar, Garig Ross, strode into the living room. “Are you actually practicing your lines?”

Kris opened his eyes. He hadn’t realized he’d closed them. “Go fuck yourself.”

“Now that’s not the way to entice me to want to be fucked by you.” Garig shrugged out of his street clothes. Unlike Kris, Garig seemed to love being nude. He folded his jeans and tucked his things into his duffle bag. “You’re supposed to make me at least kind of want to be with you.”

“I don’t want to be here or with you.” Kris dropped the script onto his bag. “I’m tired of these movies.”

“So?” Garig shook out the ripped denim. He waved the jeans around. “This won’t cover my ass.”

“That’s the point. You’re supposed to look young, interested, and green as hell but ready to take a seven-inch cock up your tight ass.” Kris rolled his eyes. “You’re young, but you are no virgin.”

“Don’t you know it.” Garig stepped into the jeans, then slid his cowboy boots back on. He admired his ass in the mirror. “Papa likes what he sees.”

If Kris had been on the prowl for a date and wasn’t picky, he might have hooked up with Garig for real. The guy was handsome. From his perfectly styled hair combed to appear as if he’d rolled straight out of bed, down his chiseled body to his sculpted legs, he personified sexy. Most guys wanted to fuck him—except Kris.

He’d made fifteen flicks with Garig. None of them endeared Garig to him. The guy might be hot, but he was also a hot mess. He dropped his pants for everyone and God only knew if he was careful.

“We’re going to do this thing.” Garig wriggled into the vest. His pierced nipples glinted in the light. “What are you saving all that money for?”

“Nothing.” Kris glanced in the mirror and slicked his hair back. He never wore his hair forward in the films. The combed-back style made him feel like the character rather than himself. Maybe that was crazy, but he preferred having the bit of separation.

He tucked his wallet, keys and phone into his bag, then stripped down to his running pants and the tank top. According to the script, he was supposed to start out on his balcony. Garig would be on the balcony next door, flirting.

He closed his eyes again. Three more films and he’d have enough money. A momentary vision popped into his brain. He didn’t want to be in front of the camera without his clothes. He’d be making actual movies with plots and good actors. Even if he had to fund the damn thing himself, he was going to be a real actor in a real movie. He opened his eyes. Get the film done and move forward.

“All right. Let’s go,” the director said. He pointed to Kris. “Your condoms and lube are beside the bed.”

“You’d make so much more money if you’d just do these bare.” Garig shrugged. “I’m raking it in.”

“I’m fine with what I’m doing.” At least when they worked, he knew he was safe. Kris made his way through the bedroom and stopped on the balcony.

“You’re going to chat him up. Stick to the script if you want, but you have to say he’s a hot piece of ass and you want to do him,” the director said. He clapped Kris on the shoulder. “Just make it sound intelligent and like you really want him.”

God. Kris stood on the balcony and gripped the railing. Three years before, he’d have considered throwing himself over the edge. Too many demons remained with him. He shook off the black feelings and focused on the job at hand.

“Ready? Action.” The director pointed to him. The camera clicked.

Time to shine. Kris gripped the railing again and stared at the city below. The palm trees waved in the slight breeze. Cars zipped down the street.

“There is nothing happening in this city.” He sighed. “Nothing.”

Garig appeared on his own balcony. “I don’t know about that.”

“Oh?” Kris leaned against his railing. “You’re new.”

“I am, and in more ways than you know.” Garig grinned. “Where’s your boyfriend?”

Ah. They weren’t following the script at all. Kris folded his hands. “I’m single. You?”

“Ready to mingle,” Garig replied. “Let me come over.”

“The door is open.” Kris nodded toward the other side of the apartment. “Let yourself in.”

“Cut,” the director shouted. “Reset. Good take.”

Kris groaned. He knew what to do next. Hell, he’d been a professional in the adult world since he’d turned twenty-one, six years ago. But he wanted more out of life. Unfortunately, life didn’t want him to graduate beyond the blow jobs and anal sex on camera. He thought back to his high school career. He’d nailed the Shakespeare plays and the dippy romantic comedies the drama club insisted on presenting every spring. He loved the rush of performing and the grit of having to work with others for that play to turn out right.

He glanced over at Garig. The only acting he’d get to do now would be to appear to be interested in what was going on. Another player strolled into the room. Not a grip or a camera man. Kris studied the new guy. Young and very eager. The kid practically bounced over to the director.

“Who?” Kris heard the director ask. “Oh. Over there. You know what to do.”

The kid crossed the room and stood in front of Kris. He didn’t say anything, just stared at him.

At the Close of the Con with @MeganSlayer #RAGT18 #convention #meganslayer #whatilearned

As I look back on this convention, #RAGT18, I have to pause to think about the people who weren’t there. I have to give pause for missing them. When I go to the Reader and Author Get Together, my main goal is to see my friends. It’s like a family reunion. Some of the faces change, but most don’t. It’s comforting.

I have to pause to think about the friends who were there. The laughs, the fun and the good times. Like I said, I go for the friends.

Books have been sold, parties had and prizes won. The money for the raffles went to a pet shelter, so I went a little overboard. I’m a pet person.

I would like to say I’ve got more to mention but I don’t. Why? It’s the end and doggoneit, I’m tired.

While I get back up to speed, here’s a little bit about my latest release, Embracing His Roar:

“Sir?” She rested her hands on her hips but held onto the card. “Question.”

Ryder froze, then turned around. His eyes widened. “You’re topless.”

“You told me to disrobe.” She tipped her head. “May I pull my hair back?”

“Of course.” He nodded. “I want you to be comfortable.”

“Good.” She turned her attention to removing the rest of her clothes. Another thought occurred to her. “What about shoes? Do you want me in heels? Boots?”

“Bare is fine.” He held out his hand. “Do you have the elastic—or clips—for your hair?”

“Oh!” She offered up the black band.

He stood behind her and gathered her hair at the crown of her head. “Tell me if this hurts.”

“I get off on the pain,” she said. A laugh bubbled in her throat. At least he’d made her feel comfortable. “You’re fine.”

“Good.”

She bit back a moan. She loved having her hair played with. When a man ran his fingers through the long strands and massaged her scalp, the motions sent her into another orbit. She swayed then righted herself. “Thank you, Sir.”

“You’re welcome.” He stood before her again. His gaze slid up and down her body. “What’s the card?”

“That’s how I get into the office. I usually keep it in my bra, but since I don’t have one on…” She hesitated. “Would you keep it for me? On your person? It’s very important. I don’t like to have it out of my sight.”

“Of course.” He tucked the card into his front pocket. “Won’t leave here until you ask for it.”

“Thank you.” Relief washed over her. She clasped her hands behind her and widened her stance a bit. Did she measure up? Chilly air caressed her body. Electricity zapped her from within.

“You’re pierced.” He tapped her nipple. “What other surprises do you have?”

“I guess you’ll have to find out when we play.”

“You want me.”

“Yes, I do.” He needed to get through to Blaze. Not everyone wanted to use him. “I’d rather you didn’t dance for me.”

“Christ.” Blaze left Delaney’s lap. “I knew it. You’re trying to get me to quit.”

Shit. Yes, he wanted Blaze out of the business, but it wasn’t because he wanted to save all of the strippers.

“I’m not quitting. I make good money here, and I can keep on the down low. No taxes. Yeah, fuck you.” Blaze growled. “I can’t get my paperwork. I’m not allowed because I can’t document where I came from.”

“Why?” Every shifter had been given the right to gain a driver’s license, a job and a passport. Where Blaze had come from wasn’t an issue.

“No. I’m not doing it. I can’t. Look, tell management, but I can’t do this. I’ll take the hit.” Blaze shook his head again. “I can’t.”

Delaney took money from his pocket. He’d tucked a note between the bills, wanting Blaze to see it later. He pushed the cash into Blaze’s hand. “You’re a good man.”

He should say more but didn’t know what to do. He left his chair and ducked out of the private room. Embarrassment washed over him as he walked out of the club. Being there was dangerous. If someone recognized the head of the mayor’s campaign at a strip club, Delaney would lose his job. He made his way through the private exit and disappeared through the tunnel to the parking garage.

His panther craved Blaze. The big cat sensed Blaze’s confusion. Yes, the cash was good, but something about Blaze screamed that the shifter wanted to be a decent man. Delaney sighed and climbed behind the wheel of his car. Hopefully, Blaze would read the note and take him seriously. Maybe, there was a chance they could find common ground or even a friendship. A relationship was probably out of the question. Too bad, the cat didn’t care. Delaney wished his panther would settle down. There wouldn’t be any claiming tonight, and the panther would have to wait.

Tate sighed and gripped the nearly empty bottle. He shifted on the seat enough to look at Raine. “You asked me, so I’ll ask you. Where’s your boyfriend?”

“Don’t have one.” The blush returned. “Single and ready to mingle or whatever it’s called.”

“Oh.” Perfect.

Raine waved his hands. The beer sloshed in his bottle. “Strike that. I mean… Christ, I don’t know what I mean. I don’t have a boyfriend. The last time I tried to date, the guy said I was too nerdy and turned me down.”

He placed his palm on Raine’s thigh. “What if I said I wouldn’t?”

Raine dropped the bottle onto his lap and yelped. “Wait. Wouldn’t turn me down?” He wound his fingers around the neck of the beer and stared at Tate. “You just met me.”

“So?” Tate stood, then put his bottle on the makeshift coffee table. “Sometimes things are meant to happen fast.”

“Fast maybe, but are you sure? I’m…no one. I bet Blake has a guy over there that’s more like what you want.” He scrambled to his feet. “Someone hotter.”

“You’re one of the sexiest men I’ve ever met.” Tate tugged Raine into his arms and stuffed his hands into Raine’s back pockets. He liked the way they fit together. “Dance with me. The music is just loud enough for ambience.”

“Sure.” Raine bowed his head and draped his arms around Tate’s shoulders. “I’m not very good at dancing.”

As they swayed together, Tate held Raine to his chest and breathed in the scent of him. Spicy, but fresh. He rested his chin on Raine’s shoulder and feathered a kiss over Raine’s neck. “You’re doing a great job.”

“Am I?”
