Contemporary Paranormal Gay Romance

Novella

M/M, Anal Sex

Ryan ‘Blaze’ Burden knew his life wasn’t perfect. He’s a stripper at Stiff and a shifter, but he can’t tell anyone about his special ability. The popularity of shifters hasn’t come to Stiff or the town of Sugar Ridge, for that matter. Being a shifter is still frowned upon. Ryan knows he doesn’t fit in, but he does have one bright spot in his life—the mystery man who comes to the club and requests Ryan for private dances.
The electricity between them is palpable, but if Ryan makes a move, will the hottie reciprocate?

Delaney Sullivan doesn’t come to Stiff for the ambiance. He’s there for one dancer—Blaze. He senses the shifter within the handsome young man. But Delaney works for the enemy—he’s the campaign manager for the mayor of Sugar Ridge. He doesn’t share the mayor’s desire to outlaw shifters because he’s a panther shifter. Can he get Blaze out of the club? To trust him? Or maybe even to love him?

These opposites certainly attract, but can they find the mutual trust to have a future together?

“You want me.”

“Yes, I do.” He needed to get through to Blaze. Not everyone wanted to use him. “I’d rather you didn’t dance for me.”

“Christ.” Blaze left Delaney’s lap. “I knew it. You’re trying to get me to quit.”

Shit. Yes, he wanted Blaze out of the business, but it wasn’t because he wanted to save all of the strippers.

“I’m not quitting. I make good money here, and I can keep on the down low. No taxes. Yeah, fuck you.” Blaze growled. “I can’t get my paperwork. I’m not allowed because I can’t document where I came from.”

“Why?” Every shifter had been given the right to gain a driver’s license, a job and a passport. Where Blaze had come from wasn’t an issue.

“No. I’m not doing it. I can’t. Look, tell management, but I can’t do this. I’ll take the hit.” Blaze shook his head again. “I can’t.”

Delaney took money from his pocket. He’d tucked a note between the bills, wanting Blaze to see it later. He pushed the cash into Blaze’s hand. “You’re a good man.”

He should say more but didn’t know what to do. He left his chair and ducked out of the private room. Embarrassment washed over him as he walked out of the club. Being there was dangerous. If someone recognized the head of the mayor’s campaign at a strip club, Delaney would lose his job. He made his way through the private exit and disappeared through the tunnel to the parking garage.

His panther craved Blaze. The big cat sensed Blaze’s confusion. Yes, the cash was good, but something about Blaze screamed that the shifter wanted to be a decent man. Delaney sighed and climbed behind the wheel of his car. Hopefully, Blaze would read the note and take him seriously. Maybe, there was a chance they could find common ground or even a friendship. A relationship was probably out of the question. Too bad, the cat didn’t care. Delaney wished his panther would settle down. There wouldn’t be any claiming tonight, and the panther would have to wait.

Novella

The right piece for their perfect triad seems to be the one man who doesn’t seem to fit at all.

Eli and Silas have done pretty much everything twins can do together within reason. They share lovers and are inseparable. Now, the lions want free. They want someone to be with both of them and can understand the dual sides to their collective nature. But the twins are scarred by their past. Eli uses his people skills to please and get by, while Silas takes the quieter, introverted and angry approach. Can these two find a perfect complement? Does that person even exist?

Owen Cantrell believes he’s not only worthy of the shifters, but he’s their missing piece. He’s human and hasn’t been around shifters, but he’s not afraid. What could go wrong?

When these three get together, there are plenty of sparks, but things can’t be perfect forever. The way Eli, Silas and Owen deal with their problems and everything thrown their way will prove if they aren’t meant to be or if they can go the distance.

Note: Merging Their Roar is part of the Sanctuary series. Each book features different characters and can be enjoyed as a standalone story.

“We’d like you to live here. Teach the shifters about being human—like manners, technology, how to exist outside of the Sanctuary, along with how to spot a group like Wet Dreams and how to run away. I think you’re what we need.” Markas leaned his elbows on the desk. “What do you think?”

None of what he’d been told was what he’d expected. They trusted him? Despite what he’d admitted and the very real possibility he’d truly try to fuck a shifter. He doubted Markas was telling the truth.

“You’ve been through a lot in your short life. I can’t imagine coming out. I was lucky. After I shifted, John accepted me. Our family of shifters is accepted here and I’d like them to be accepted in public, too.”

Owen nodded. He wasn’t the most socially savvy person, but he was willing to help. “What do you want me to do and when?”

“You’re welcome to move in as soon as you’d like. We’ve got plenty of room. Once you’re settled, I want you to choose a few shifters to work with. They’ll be your responsibility, but I’m sure they’ll all want you to pick them,” Markas said.

“Like one or two?”

“I’d say start with one. Don’t overwhelm yourself.”

“Then…okay.” He had to think this through. Too bad, he really wanted to accept and his mouth wasn’t working with his brain. “I’m game, but I need to get out of my lease.”

“Done.”

“What?”

Owen supposed Markas meant he’d help until the lease was up.

“Trust me.” Markas stood. “Let me introduce you around.” He rounded the desk. When Owen stood, Markas stopped. “But remember, we’re all watching you. If you lie or sell us out…I’ll know. If you think you’re a good double agent, you’re not. If you double cross any of us, I’ll unleash my lion on your ass. I’m not afraid, and my lion gives no fucks.”

Luke strolled out of the building and put on his sunglasses. He strode over to his car then tossed his jacket and his briefcase onto the backseat before climbing behind the wheel. He turned on the radio. One of his favorite songs played, so he blasted the tune and sang along as he drove down the lane away from the Sanctuary. Though the property sat on a state route, there wasn’t much traffic. He stopped just past the gate and checked the traffic before pulling onto the road. He started toward Oakdale, but at the single crossroads before the city limits, he noticed a beat-up brown truck.

He paused. People never abandoned cars by the intersection. They waited for the dirt turnaround about a mile down the road. Was there a problem? An accident? He normally would’ve kept going, but something called to him. He noticed a man behind the wheel of the vehicle. The need to help strengthened. For all Luke knew, the guy was having a heart attack or maybe a seizure. He needed to stop and help.

Luke pulled off in front of the vehicle and patted the gun he’d strapped to his hip. He kept himself current at the gun range but hadn’t needed the piece until now. He backed up alongside the vehicle and rolled his window down.

“Do you need help?” Luke asked. He kept one hand on the car’s shifter. “Buddy?”

The wide-eyed man stared at Luke. “What’s your name?”

“My…” This was odd. “Luke Stevens. I’m an attorney. I work with the Sanctuary.”

The guy bolted out of the truck and yanked on the passenger-side handle of the car. “Help me.”

“I don’t know you. Are you hurt? I can call the ambulance.” He didn’t unlock the door. For a split-second, he could’ve sworn he saw a lion in the man’s eyes. It had to be his imagination. He’d never seen the animal in Markas’ eyes, and he knew Markas was a shifter. Could this man be a shifter? Or the jerk sending the screwy emails?

“I’m not hurt yet. Please? I need help.” Another flash of the lion shone in the man’s golden eyes. “You were honest with me. I’ll be honest with you. My name is Saul Mason. I was born at the Philadelphia Zoo four years ago. I’ve been able to shift for a year, and the first time I shifted at the zoo, the workers thought someone had stolen me. They thought I was the thief. I didn’t steal a lion—I am the lion.”

“A shifter.” Luke had already been given that information, but he had to stay it out loud to make sense in his head.

“And you’re with the Sanctuary. Help me.” The pleading in Saul’s voice got to Luke. “Please?”

He unlocked the door. “Get in.” He could take Saul back to Sanctuary, and if nothing else, help him get established there. God knew Markas would see through Saul if the guy was lying.

Saul crawled into the car and locked the door. He hunkered down on the seat. “Fate’s a bitch, but at least, I found you and not him.” He put the window up. “I think I’m actually safe.”

“Did you need something—anything—from your vehicle?” Luke asked.

“No. It’s from a friend. Some people think I stole it, but I didn’t.” Saul curled up in the seat. “I’m not a good guy. I’ve done bad shit in order to stay alive. I didn’t steal the truck, but I don’t regret taking it. A man named Tucci swore I belonged to him. I don’t know what he wants, but it can’t be good.”

“Tucci? As in Anthony Tucci?” Luke put the car in gear and made an illegal U-turn in order to go back to Sanctuary.

“Oh God. Don’t tell me you work for him.” Saul scratched at the door handle. “I need to get out.”

“Stop.” Luke swatted at Saul. “No, I don’t.” He punched the gas. The faster he got to Sanctuary, the quicker he could unload Saul. “I don’t know where Tucci is. I’ve never met him, and no, I don’t work for him. He’s not high on my list, though.”

“You’re not a shifter.” Saul remained low in his seat, but his tone changed. He stared at Luke. “I can smell it. You’re not.”

“That’s how you know? My smell?” He’d showered that morning and put on antiperspirant. Hopefully, he didn’t stink.

“You’ve got a scent, yes. It’s not like a dirty smell. It’s just you, and my lion can tell. It’s what told me; you’re a safe person. Sometimes, my instincts have been off, but not this time. Most people freak out when the word shifter is used. You didn’t flinch.”

“I’m honored, but I’ve worked with shifters before. I never know what to expect with them, but I’m not scared, either.” He wouldn’t admit to his fear, though. For all he knew, Saul could snap and do something horrible to him. “My friends run the Sanctuary. They’ll help you as much as possible. As for the maybe-not-quite stolen truck, I should get that sorted out.” He should probably turn Saul in, too, but he’d worry about that later.

“I wasn’t lying. I didn’t steal it. The truck was given to me by the one human who actually believed I was a shifter.” Saul grasped Luke’s free hand. “I borrowed it because I needed to get away from the zoo. I had permission.” He faced Luke. “At the zoo was a keeper named Saul, and that was his truck. He didn’t want it, but he wanted to help me get away from Tucci. He saw me shift and didn’t flip out. He said shifters are natural creatures and should be respected. He helped me until the freak-out died down then he got me out of the zoo. He’s the reason I’m here and not in the enclosure or dead.”

“If I contact him, will he verify this information?” Luke asked. He turned back onto the Sanctuary lane and swiped his keycard in the reader. He wasn’t sure if he believed Saul—or whatever the shifter’s name happened to be—but he also wasn’t convinced the story was a lie.

“Yeah.” The shifter offered up a badge. “See this? This is his old one, but it’s got his information. I’m supposed to say I’m him if I get into trouble.” He pointed to the plastic card on the lanyard and sighed. “So you’ll help me?”

“John and Joe will wonder why I’m back here already.” Luke parked the car in front of the fountain. “Let’s go inside. You can tell them everything, and they’ll help you.”

“You’re not staying?”

This week’s words are: resource, food, extinct, address, tumor. Now for the continuing story of Molly and Willie. #findmolly

Willie drove to Rachel’s apartment. Molly’s sister knew more than she let on, pretty much all the time. She’d be a good resource to finding Molly or at least information on Molly. He should stop for food first. If he didn’t, he’d have to listen to his stomach growl for the next twenty miles.

He ran through a hundred scenarios. Where was she? Did she have a problem? Medical issue? A tumor? Or had she been kidnapped? Jesus. He wished he knew.

He pulled into the parking lot of a fast food joint that was slowing going extinct across the country and ordered a burger and fries. Not great for his cholesterol, but he didn’t care. He had to get to Molly and this would be the fastest route.

He drove and ate, not the safest thing he could do, but he had to get to Rachel’s. Twenty minutes later, he pulled into her parking lot and stopped at her apartment. He barely got out of his truck and slipped in the mud from the recent rain, but managed to hustle up to his former sister-in-law’s apartment. “Rachel?” He pounded on the door. “Rachel?”

She yanked the door open. “What? Oh, it’s you.”

“Thanks.” He’d never been close to her, but this was different. “Look, I need your help. I can’t find Molly. This isn’t one of her luxury trip things or her wandering off to find herself. This is important. Do you have any information? A name? Address? Did she tell you something?”

Rachel paled. “You’re really worried.”

“I am.”

“You still love her.”

“Why else would I be running all over hell to find her? Yes.” HIs patience wore thin. “Please?”

“They said not to tell you.” Rachel fidgeted with the door. “I’m not supposed to tell you.”

“Who said?” He needed to know.

“Them.”

Sydney hated his pose. God, he’d been in the midst of begging for his life and for Arai’s life to be spared when Zeus cursed them. He hadn’t deserved to be reduced to stone. So, he’d been a terrible lover to Zeus and horrible at his job of guarding him. When he’d signed on to be a protector, he thought it was a joke. He hadn’t realized Zeus really wanted someone to play bodyguard for him. Sydney had been in love with the idea of living on Olympus and protecting a god. He never would’ve guessed Zeus truly demanded monogamy, even when he played around with everyone on the staff.

Good Lord. Who said things like, “I want you to come to Olympus and be my warrior”? No one that Sydney knew, yet he’d followed Zeus to a place that seemed like a dream and better than any fantasy.

Zeus hadn’t been joking.

Then again, Sydney hadn’t believed the silver fox was a true god. Were other gods roaming the earth? According to Zeus, the entire clan of Olympian deity lived there. Sydney hadn’t seen anyone besides Zeus, but he hadn’t been paying attention.

The adventure of living on Olympus was more than enough for him. He loved a good quest, especially if he could be himself. Zeus hadn’t minded he was gay. In fact, Zeus encouraged him to explore his sexuality. He spent his days guarding Zeus and his nights fucking him. All had been well until Sydney met Arai.

Arai had been everything Sydney ever wanted in a man—beautiful, masculine, sexy, and interested in him. He and Sydney guarded Zeus and stole off at night to make love. None of Zeus’s warnings had been enough to prevent him and Arai from getting together.

Sydney had been in love with Arai and felt confident about being out. He could love who he wanted and not be ashamed. He even embraced the idea he’d upset Zeus, but things would work out. They always did—until Zeus didn’t cooperate. He wanted Sydney to be his plaything and belong to no one else.

He winced, although no one could see the gesture. He still remembered the panic in Arai’s eyes when he’d been found guilty of being with Sydney and the pain of losing their relationship.

Now Sydney couldn’t tell anyone about his troubles or his curse. How could he if he couldn’t talk? At least he didn’t have that awful sheet over him and he wasn’t in the musty old house.

His brother, Max, hadn’t appreciated him and his younger brother, Stan, hadn’t wanted him. They had no idea he was locked in the alabaster. All they knew was a sculpture of someone resembling their brother had shown up in the parlor of the family home.

Voices caught his attention. He hadn’t liked when the woman caressed him, but he wanted the man to return. He could gaze at the fellow who seemed to run the shop where he was now housed. He’d been locked in the family parlor, moved to a barn, left in a garage, and then shipped to a house where Max left him in the back room. Now he lived in a “junk shop”—as the younger girl called the place.

The man with the sparkling eyes stood in front of Sydney. “Well, you’re all mine.” He folded his arms. “I’m not sure you’re worth anything, but I’m stuck with you.” His blue eyes flashed and the thin outcropping of hairs on his chin caught the light.

Heat, like the rush of excitement he felt when he’d first seen Arai, washed over him. Who was this man and why did he seem to kick the temperature up so high?

This week’s post concerns my fantasy vacation. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d go for a fantasy vacation. I’m not much of a swimmer – more like a wader. I don’t like being hot. I hate sweating. I’m not wild about being in a plane. The idea I’m in a moving tube that could go down at any moment and feels suffocating…just not for me.

But this is a fantasy. I’d like to one day go to Liverpool. I’m told it’s not that exciting, but it’s all a matter of what you want to see/do. I want to see where the Beatles are from. I do. I’d like to see where the Cavern was and just experience the town. I’d like to go to England anyway, but that’s where I’d want to go first. One day I’d also like to go to Greece to see the ruins in Athens and Paris…I’d like to see Germany, too. But those are stories for other days.

What about you?

He deserved to live the life he wanted.

Cain hurried down the back steps clutching his bag. The valet from before stood by the doors leading to the garage.

“Sir?” He opened the door for Cain. “Going out?”

“To Aidyn’s.” Cain winked. “You know.”

“I used to.” The man smiled. “Shall I let your mother in on this?”

“Please do. I’ll be over there for a few days.” He winked again and elbowed the valet. “We don’t plan on coming up for air in that time.” God, he was laying it on thick.

“Yes, sir.” The valet dispatched a driver, then disappeared into the main portion of the house.

Cain slipped into the back seat of the limo and waited until the car moved. His heart hammered. He was doing it—leaving the nest. He’d lied, of course, but that didn’t matter. Fuck it. His hands shook and he held the bag tight. He’d never acted out before, never tried to be something he wasn’t or push anyone. He’d fallen right into line because it had been required of him.

The driver dropped him off at Aidyn’s hotel. Instead of expecting the car to wait on him, Cain waved him home. “Get some rest. God knows I won’t be.” He grinned. “I’ll call for you.”

The driver nodded once and left.

Cain ducked into the hotel. He’d never stayed at this particular building and hoped no one would recognize him without his Cain Ables celebrity persona in place. He was just Cain Ables, regular guy.

He headed through the lobby to the side entrance. An attendant smiled at him. “May I help you, sir?”

“I’d like a taxi to the airport.” Holy fuck. He was doing this. “Please?”

“Sure.” The attendant waved down one of the drivers. “May I help you with anything else?”

“No, thank you.” He shook hands with the man and settled into the back seat of the taxi. As the car sped toward the airport, Cain sighed. He’d really escaped. His parents would be thrilled when they found out he was at the hotel with a woman. He was being the bad-boy actor everyone expected.

Except he wasn’t bad and he wasn’t with a woman. Fear and doubt crept into his brain. Part of him wasn’t sure he could get away with his act of transgression. The rest of him couldn’t wait to get to Ohio and be a nobody.

Time to be myself.

“You’re a college student?”

“Yes.” She put her license back in her wallet. “Do you want to see my student ID?”

“No.” He should talk to her in one of the offices, instead of the foyer. “Let me call Amanda over. She can cover the desk.”

“Okay.” She shrugged. “Whatever you’ve got to do.”

He tapped his phone, summoning the woman who normally manned the desk. He sent the text, then turned his attention to Kelly. “Tell me about yourself.”

“What do you want to know?” she asked. “I’m twenty-one, in my third year at Green College. I’m studying film history, and I’d like to get a position working with a museum or in the film industry cataloguing movies. Ideally, I want to work here in Cambridge in the little museum, creating digital and film content for the museum as well as cataloguing the films and clips in the archives.”

“Ah.” He gestured to Amanda, who’d just arrived. “I need you at the desk while I speak to this applicant.”

Amanda crooked her drawn-on eyebrow. “Is that what you’re calling it now?”

“What?” Kelly sighed. “If you can’t take me seriously, then I give up.”

“You’ll never work here with that attitude.” Amanda took her place behind the desk. “Good luck.”

Martin groaned. He liked Amanda, but not in a romantic way. Her sense of humor didn’t gel with his, and she tended to look at the world in a pessimistic manner. “Thank you.” He picked up the laptop and gestured to Kelly. “Ready?”

“Sure.” Kelly inched around the desk.

Amanda grabbed Martin’s arm.

“Hang on,” Martin said. He directed Kelly to the conference room. “Wait here. I’ll be right back.” He left her alone and returned to the desk. “Yes?”

Amanda rested her hands on her hips. The dress clung to her curves and showed too much cleavage, but she did her job and brought in customers. “What’s the deal?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” He raked his fingers through his hair. “What’s your beef?”

“She’s young.”

“She is.” He knew and couldn’t do much about it, but most of the girls who danced at the club were under twenty-five.

“She’s not dancer material.”

“Nope.” He could’ve told her that when Kelly first walked into the building.

“Yet you’re wasting your time on her.” She crooked her eyebrow again. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Do you know who I am?” He narrowed his eyes. “Do you?”

“Not a clue. I thought you were a handsome man who happened to share my elevator car,” she said, trying to be nonchalant. Once he learned her true identity, he’d want something from her. “That’s it. Should I know you?”

“You don’t know?” he asked.

He must be the Crane Gray he’d bragged about. She rolled her eyes. “I’ve said it already. I don’t know you.” She wasn’t lying, even if she’d guessed his identity. “I thought we had a connection, but now I’m scared of you, so I’m leaving.” She turned on her heel and crossed the room.

“Wait.” He touched her arm. “You don’t know?”

“No.” She propped her hand on her hip. “I’d like to go now—if you don’t mind.” This must be part of what Leto meant by screwing with her happiness. Sometimes things with guys just didn’t work out.

“Please don’t.” He held his hand out to her. “I’m Crane Gray and it’s nice to meet you—someone who doesn’t know me. I’ve got a concert here at the hotel tonight. I should be prepping for it, but I just don’t care and I want out of my life for a while. You fascinate me and I’m enjoying myself here in the bar. I’d like you to stay. Please?”

She debated what to do. Stay with Crane, the celebrity, or find someone a little more boring.

“Will you at least tell me your name?” he asked. “Have a drink with me?”

She liked him, despite his ability to drive her crazy. He was physically what she wanted in a man—blond hair, blue eyes, tall, handsome, and younger than her. Then again, most men were younger than her. She’d like to spend time with him because, honestly, this would be the only encounter. He could be that pure gold she’d been looking for.

“Honey?” He gave her space. “It’s just a drink.”

She could handle this. She’d ruined many a man, forced Echo to repeat the same words, turned individuals into monsters, and destroyed mortals. Having a drink with Crane was nothing. “Sure.”
