This week’s post is about best friends and what are the best traits in them.
I have to admit something here and now. When I was a kid, I thought I had a ton of best friends. I really did. Then I got older (say middle school/high school) and realized those people I thought were best friends didn’t value me as much as I did them. It’s a learning process. I was always the gal good enough for help or a favor, but it wasn’t always reciprocated. As I got older, I tended to keep myself kind of insulated.
But that’s just background on me. What do I find the most important in a best friend?
Honesty. Really. I don’t mean the honesty where they won’t tell you if the dress looks awful if it really does. I mean the kind who can look at a situation and see it from a different angle. Doesn’t mean you won’t always agree or you’ll disagree. It’s just a different way to look at things. That’s important. I guess you could call it perspective.
Another thing I find the best in a best friend is the ability to talk one down. I mean like when you’re having a bad day and you’re just…done. A friend who can talk you out of the funk, even if only for a little bit, or checks on you when you’re not online for a while. That’s the kind of thing that’s important for a best friend.
The last thing I can think of right now is being a friend in return. Doesn’t seem difficult does it? It can be. A best friend is the type who doesn’t see the other person as a rival, but sees their best qualities. You want to see each other succeed and you’re willing to make it happen on both ends. It’s easy to be the friend who takes and takes, but it’s a lot harder to be the one who gives, too. Then again, it can be easy to be the one who gives and gives, but it’s respected. So the balance is important.
