“Chrissy swore I spent more time here than at home, so I brought my favorite couch from home and added the mini fridge. I have formal meetings downstairs in the main Flash offices. I like having the two distinct places. One for me and one for the public.” He nodded to the last frame. “We’ll get Ethan up here, sooner or later. All of you boys made it onto my wall of fame.”

With Ethan’s luck? Probably later. Sam nodded. “That’s the plan.” Always the diplomatic one. “You’re going to put him in the second truck, come Eldora, right?”

“That’s the plan. I’m sure you heard the rumor. I put Corey on as his crew chief so you can work with Adam on the dirt trucks. You’re my best guy for specialty tracks.” Just as fast as he’d walked to Sam’s side, Collin strode to the fridge and grabbed two bottles of beer. “She’s cold and goes down a little too smooth.” He chuckled. “These are the last two, I guess. Well, unless they come back this year and offer to sponsor the second half of the season. I’m oping they do. We can use the funds.” He untucked his dress shirt and used the tail to open the bottle, then handed the beer to Sam. “Enjoy.”

“Thank you.” Sam tipped the bottle for a long swig, then smacked his lips. “Sorry. Bad habit.”

“Enjoying a good brew? Never.” Collin sat down on the middle of the sofa. “Join me.”

“Thanks, Sir.” Sam perched on the edge of the plush leather. Don’t take too many liberties, he reminded himself. He worked for Collin, not screwed around with him. Besides, Collin had noticed him—best guy for specialty races. Not too shabby.

“You don’t have to call me Sir. Collin works. Sit back, relax.” Collin propped his right ankle on his left knee and rested his bottle on his right knee. “Other than the young gun being quick on the trigger, how are things on the team? You’re happy?”

“Very.” Sam eased backwards on the couch until he rested in the crook of the back and arm. “Ethan’s strong-willed, but once he gets himself sorted out, you’re right, he’ll come around. I see big things for him.”

“What about you? You’re here late. The wifey isn’t upset?” Collin downed a swig of the beer. “Wait, no, you’re one of the lucky single souls. I envy you.”

“Me?” Sam choked on his brew. “Not a chance.” He snorted, then coughed. “I seem to attract guys who want a one night or a quickie with my driver friends. Use me to get to him. Sucks. And for the longest time, I actually believed a couple of them loved me.”

Tate slammed into the corners for the requested two laps, pushing the truck to the limit

before he slowed down and turned onto the pit lane. He cut the power to the engine. Kennedy

stood on the opposite side of the wall, scribbling something onto his clipboard. Tate fiddled with

the connections on his helmet. The quicker he got out of the truck, the sooner he’d get reamed

out by Kennedy. God knew, Floyd lived to berate him.

Better suck it up and take the tongue lashing.

Tate removed his helmet and clutched it to his stomach. “So?”

“You’re really quiet on the radio,” Kennedy said. He didn’t look up. “Have you always

been so reserved?”

“It’s a habit.”

Kennedy stopped writing. His brows knotted, and he stared at Tate. “He really treated

you like shit, didn’t he? I thought maybe the race I’d listened in to was a fluke.” He shook his

head and resumed scrawling on the paper. “Once you locked in and found your rhythm, you were

fine. Laps six to twelve looked great. What were you thinking about?”

Focus. The guy meant business, not anything else. Tate wanted to reply, “you,” but he

doubted Kennedy would appreciate that. “Tearing up the corners.”

Once again, Kennedy stopped writing. He snorted. “Uh-huh. The sandwiches arrived

during your lap thirteen, so why don’t we close things down here and take them to my office?”

He glanced around the track. “Where do they keep this truck? In the garage?”

“In the semi behind you.” Tate pointed in the direction of the massive vehicle. “Doesn’t

make much sense, but they only let me play with the race trucks during the race weekend. I can’t

even test them during test sessions. I have to run this one.”

“Is it set up the same?”

“Hell if I know. Floyd kept me clueless.”

“Jesus.” Kennedy fluttered his hand. “Put the truck away, and we’ll head to the office.

I’ve got a plan for Texas, but it’s going to get bumpy before it gets better. Can you handle a few

bumps?”

Tate grinned. He wanted more than a bumpy ride from the handsome crew chief. He

wanted the man’s hand on his ass and his growl in his ear. For the time being, he’d settle for a

decent working relationship. “Deal.”

“Damn it, Fortney locked his brakes again. So what are we going to do about a driver?” Adam knew the story well without knowing every the detail. Kennedy Taggart ran the biggest racing empire with the best winning percentage. All the drivers wanted to nab spots with her teams—including Gavin. “Tell me you have a good replacement. One that just sort of showed up or something? I know you. You’ve always got an ace up your sleeve.”

The last time Adam checked, the drivers haunting pit road in search of a job were about two. One wanted to make his great comeback after his third concussion and another owned the reputation for crashing after twenty or so laps. Not a good batch. At least, they were in Charlotte. If the team hustled, they might be able to nab one of the local drivers. Maybe.

“Well, that’s why I came down here, my friend. You’re right.”Collin smiled then waved at something behind Adam. “I’ve solved our problem. This is Will Camden. Remember him?”

Remember him? Adam choked back the snappy retort. A scar was hard to forget. For him, Will was that scar. Saying they shared a messy history was an understatement. Adam grabbed the bill of his hat then tugged the hat tighter down on his head.

Will, dressed in a crisp white polo shirt, ambled up to where Collin stood. A wide grin spread across his face, and his sapphire eyes still featured the bright sparkle Adam remembered so well. He’d be a good match as the next Flash driver, but damn. Why’d the past always have to come back and bite Adam in the ass?

“We’ve met.” Adam stuck out his hand. “Welcome to Flash.”

“My pleasure.” Will squeezed Adam’s hand, and the touch lingered a bit longer than Adam wanted.

Adam’s heart lodged in his throat. Being around Will would be fine on track, but they’d have to spend time together outside of the track. Then things would get sticky—and fast. Damned history between them anyway.

“He walked down pit road at the exact same time Gavin quit. I think it’s a sign.” Collin folded his arms. “And I think this is a good time for you two to patch things up.” He winked at Adam. “Will, the uniforms are in the hauler. Gavin’s about your size so they should fit. Get changed and I’ll have Adam get your seat ready.”

“You got it.” Will ducked behind Collin and into the truck hauler.

Adam waited a heartbeat then groaned. “Patch things up? Seriously? What did he tell you?”

Collin snorted. “He didn’t say a word. It’s you.” He leaned one shoulder on the hauler wall. “The moment I mentioned his name, you shut down. Anyone can see there was something between you. I assumed I was right, and I was. You and Will had a thing.”

“He’s a hothead. Dangerous on the track. Crashed out at Loudon.” Adam knelt next to the tool cart and busied himself with arranging the sockets in one of the drawers.

“Are you scared?” Collin nudged the drawer shut with the toe of his loafer. “Truth.” For being forty-two, the guy looked more like thirty-two with all the time he’d spent in the gym. The salt-and-pepper streaks in his chocolate-brown hair were the only giveaways to his true age. They could talk like brothers and understood each other like good friends. And yet, Collin knew how to drive Adam berserk with his ability to sniff out the truth.

Damn it. Adam rested one knee on the ground. “It’s kind of like the cannon fireworks. The things are dangerous as hell, but they’re beautiful. And if you’re not careful, you’ll get burned. That’s what we were.”

“I saw you work together three years ago at Bristol. You helped him win the race. That’s the kind of magic I want.”

Corey checked the figures on his tablet one more time. Everything seemed to be up to standards. Ethan’s practice times looked good, and he’d driven two great qualifying laps. Starting fourth helped keep them in the top twenty in driver’s points for the time being. Ethan’s work during qualifying also looked good for the wandering horde from Taps. At least, the covering on the truck looked awesome. The brewery logo, a full stein and lots of suds with the word Taps in the bubbles, was splashed across the hood.

He whispered a prayer that Ethan would continue to slow down and use his head on the track. “Just a little more patience, and we’ve got these things in the bag.” Corey sighed then opened his eyes. The frustration, the stress all melted away. For a moment, he had peace. “Let’s race.”

Voices caught Corey’s attention. When he glanced out at the midway, his tension returned. Ethan strolled over to the garage bay with the group of employees from Taps in tow. Instead of his normal firesuit, he wore a polo shirt and regular jeans. If Corey didn’t know better, he’d have thought Ethan worked as a publicist, not a driver.

Ethan flashed his winning smile. “This is my crew chief, Corey Blauser. Without him, I’d probably still be wrecking trucks. We have a strange way of understanding each other, even when we aren’t real thrilled with each other.”

Corey tucked the tablet under his arm. “Ethan can be a real handful.”

“Don’t you know it.” Ethan winked then waved to the group. “Let’s check out the hauler.”

As the knot of people wandered away, following Ethan, Loren stepped out of the crowd. “Good time?”

“Always a good time at the track. We race in about two hours. The driver meeting went well, and we’re set to conquer Vegas.” Corey hooked his thumb in his pocket and gripped the table in his free hand. “Ethan seems to be eating up the attention. He’s a ham.”

“He’s doing well for us. Better than Harlan expected.” Loren shrugged. “His attitude up to a few months ago had us worried.”

“He came around.” Corey hated small talk. He strolled to the rear end of the truck and surveyed the people bustling up and down the midway. “And you? Having a good time showing the brewery’s best and brightest around?”

“It’s a living.” Loren stood beside Corey. “I hate promo parties like this.”

“Why?” Corey shifted his gaze to Loren. Did he hate crowds, too? Couldn’t be. “You’re the center of attention. That’s pretty cool.” Not really.

“I hate it. Having people stare at me always churns my stomach. I feel like I’m under the gun to be cool or funny. Then the brass shows up. They expect me to kiss ass and play nice with them. Do as I’m told. I hate ass kissing.”

“Gotta be the dominant? Or are you a rebel?”

Loren crooked one eyebrow. “Sometimes.” He lowered his voice to a gravelly whisper. “I actually prefer to switch up my roles in the bedroom. Top, bottom… I’m good.”

“You were good, yeah.”

A knock at the door startled Royce from his thoughts. “Fuck,” he muttered. “Come on in.”

Ethan strode up the stairs, a huge duffle bag in hand and a knapsack slung over his shoulder. “Do you think Collin’s interested in me?”

Royce pressed his lips together. Not the question he’d expected from Ethan.

“Wait, I mean, as a second, fulltime truck driver? I know he’s all up Sam’s ass.” Ethan dropped the bags. “I’m screwing this all up.” He paced the length of the living room area. “I’d love to know I’m secure for next year.”

Okay, the hot and cold shit had to stop. Royce grabbed Ethan by the shoulders. “First, you need to calm down and breathe.” He inched Ethan onto the couch then took a step back. “The only one contracted for next year is Will.”

“‘Cause he’s the golden boy,” Ethan snapped.

Ah, the youth in Ethan reared its ugly head.

“No,” Royce bit out. “He’s settled down and steady.”

“He’s leading the points. Everyone wants him right now.”

Mother of all things holy, Royce would never make it back to North Carolina with Ethan at this rate. “Look, he’s got no ‘did not finishes’ this year. You’ve got two. Both your trucks this week are toast because you used them as battering rams.” Royce’s voice cracked and echoed off the walls. “You need to pull your head out of your ass and settle down or plan on not having a ride next year. Plain and simple.”

“Royce?”

“You’re only hot shit until the next wonder kid comes along. Prove why you’ve got staying power so Collin will have to keep you around.” Royce gasped for breath. Few people

worked him up to the point of yelling. Ethan had made the short list. Royce shoved both hands into his hair. “Maybe no one has ever told you no, but I will. Stop being a shit so you can do what you love.”

Ethan didn’t say anything for the longest time. He stared toward the floor and shuffled his boot-clad feet.

“Thanks,” Ethan mumbled. “Collin told me we needed to hang out more. Said you’d be able to sell my crap better if you got to know me. Sounds like you already do.”

Before Royce could respond, Ethan met his gaze and grinned. “Now, do you want to fuck?”

“You can’t be serious.” So much for the emotional breakthrough Royce had expected.

“I can be, and I am.” The grin widened. Ethan winked then headed to the back of the motor coach. “And you can’t knock a guy for trying. Now, where do we sleep while this sucker’s in motion? Ooh! Bunks. Top one’s mine.”

Royce groaned. Dear Lord, this would be a long ride.

the connections on his helmet.

“Deal.”
