Love can be found in the places least expected.

Seth Reilly went to the animal shelter to comfort the cats during the loud noises on the Fourth of July. He had no idea the lumpy, grumpy black cat named Maui isn’t just a cat. He’s a shifter and he’s hot as hell. Seth hadn’t planned on adopting a cat, but he can’t leave the shifter behind.

Jeremy Peters never expected to lose his human side for so long. Then again, he never expected to land in an animal shelter, either. Now he’s got the chance to be free, but he’d rather rub against his sexy human rescuer.

When troubles from their past come back to mess with their happy home, can Seth and Jeremy find a future together?

“Thanks.” Jeremy slid the shorts up his hips, then the shirt over his head. “I’m sure you’re tired, but I’m guessing you have questions. I’m an open book. Just ask.”

Seth sat on the arm of the sofa. He did have things he wanted to ask, but he wasn’t sure where to start. “You’re a shifter. How is that possible? I’ve never met one before, but I’m assuming you’re not made. Are you?”

“Genetics, I guess.” Jeremy folded himself up on the couch and rested his elbows on his knees. “I was born a human male baby. When I reached the age of eighteen, I was able to shift. My parents never cared about the fact I could shift or that I’m gay. It was normal, I guess. They said it was something that happens and encouraged me to shift.”

“That’s cool.” Seth picked at the hem of his shirt. “My parents threw me out.”

“That’s shitty,” Jeremy said. “I wish I’d met you before now. We could’ve been tight.”

“Yeah.” Seth relaxed a bit. “Did you strike out on your own? Is that how you ended up with the family and at the shelter?”

“My parents were killed in a car accident. A drunk driver went left of center and struck their vehicle. Their house is paid for and I could’ve gone back at any time, but my older brother lives there. Burying my parents was too much for me to handle and I ran away. I went for a run in my cat form—you’ve seen me, I’m a big goofy cat—and a little girl adopted me. I lost the will to shift, so I let her.”

“You lost the will to shift because of the girl?” He’d thought Jeremy said he was gay.

“No. I only had my brother left and he’s not cool with me being gay or a shifter.” Jeremy sighed. “I should’ve leaned on my brother, but I didn’t. I let the cat side of me rule and stayed in that form. The little girl took me in and her mom was all excited to have me, but the new wore off. The mother threatened to get rid of me if the kids didn’t take care of me and you can guess the rest.”

“Damn.” His heart ached for Jeremy. “That’s terrible.”

“I’d like to think it all happened for a reason, but some days I’m not sure.”

“People forget animals have feelings.” He scooped Snuggles into his arms. “I’m honored to have an animal—no, to have two.”

Jeremy nodded once. “Good. I’m sort of fond of you.”

“You are?” Odd. “We just met. How do I know you won’t run or how do you know that I won’t return you? I won’t, but still.” Things were happening too fast.

“I can tell you’re honest,” Jeremy said. “Plus, you know my story. I’m not running away again. I can’t keep escaping life. It didn’t help or bring back my family and I could’ve ended up in the shelter or a shelter that isn’t a good place.”

“That’s true.” Seth yawned. He wanted to stay up, but damn it, he couldn’t keep his eyes open. “I’m whipped. Want me to pull out the sofa for you?”

“Please? I can shift into Maui if you’d rather and sleep on your bed with Snuggles.” Jeremy rubbed his eyes. “I’m good either way.”

“I’ll leave the door open if you change your mind.” He hesitated. If Jeremy joined him in bed, he wouldn’t kick him out, but he also wasn’t the type to invite a man into his inner sanctum this fast.

“Thanks.” Jeremy nodded. “One thing?”

“Yeah? What’s wrong?”

“Thank you.”

Seth paused. Jeremy confused him, but it pleased him to be useful to someone. “What for?”

“For adopting Maui and taking a chance on me. We both needed a second chance,” Jeremy said. “And for not flipping out when I shifted. Some people would’ve been scared. You’re special.”

“It’s jarring, but…not entirely shocking.” Special? No way. He lingered another second. “Let me get some sheets.”

“Don’t bother. I’ll sleep on the couch. It’ll be fine.” Jeremy touched Seth’s arm. “I’m low maintenance. Don’t worry about me. The blanket on the back of the sofa is plenty.”

Seth stayed rooted to the spot. He had a shifter in his home. He’d adopted two cats and one was now a handsome man. He couldn’t wait to learn about shifters and figure out what to do next. Jeremy was gay and seemed to be interested in him. He couldn’t be lucky enough to forge a deeper bond with Jeremy, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t try.

“If I don’t let Godzilla out, I won’t have curtains. Again.” Hayden stepped outside the restaurant and jabbed the numbers on her phone to call her friend, Cole. She needed a ride home.

She clutched her pepper spray in one hand and her purse in the other. No way she’d let some creep-o terrorize her. “I’ve got to get to Godzilla,” she chanted as she waited for her friend to pick up the phone. “I never should’ve let that asshole take me out. Damn grabby hands.” Visions of shredded curtains and one pissed off black cat came to mind. But just like a dog or his monster namesake, if he didn’t have time to wander around the backyard, he destroyed things in her house.

“You never should’ve gone to lunch with him,” a voice said. “Not on Halloween.”

Hayden screamed and whipped around, her purse leading the way. If she was going down, she’d go down swinging. “Who the hell are you?”

The person who’d spoken stepped out of the shadows. “Chill.” He put both hands up. “I’m not armed.”

Hayden inched closer to get a better look at him. Dear God in Heaven, the man was naked and in front of a restaurant full of people. Her gaze roved down his lean torso to the thatch of black hair at the base of his cock. She swallowed hard. Naturally, the crazy man would be good looking. Her luck didn’t run any other way.

“Hayden, honey, I don’t want to hurt you.”

A shiver ran up her spine. Didn’t want to hurt her? How the fuck did he know her name? “Who are you?”

“Godzilla. It’s a stupid name for a cat. My brother would be named Godzilla. He likes to bite and scratch. Although, naming him Fang worked, too. Hildy thinks it’s funny to name us after things we do.” He shrugged. “I just destroyed that set of curtains by accident. I never meant to piss you off.” The man folded his arms. His black hair shimmered, and his eyes glowed the same shade of green as her cat’s. He even had the same odd way of staring at her as if he knew what she was thinking, and he talked like he knew all about her cat.

“Do you want my purse?” She stuck out her hands. “Take it.” The guy might remind her of her cat, but cat shifters were the stuff of legend. Besides, didn’t Halloween bring out the crazies? Yes, he was some lunatic in character trying to scare the shit out of her… and it was working. She shivered. “Take it.”

“I’m taking you home.” He swatted her hands down. “There’s a long story I need to tell you, but the short of it is, yes, I’m a shifter. I chose you as my human, and now I’d like to go home and explain where you won’t freak out.” He inched toward her. “I won’t hurt you, but I will rip the limbs off the asshole who dicked you over at lunch. Now let’s go. It’s freezing, and I’m not fond of showing my ass off in public.”

“No.” She held her ground. “I don’t know you from Adam and you want me to take you home? No way, buddy. Blow.”

“Now that’s just mean.” He scratched his brow. “Okay, look, I come from a long line of shifters. Black cat shifters. My litter had four. Hildy knew about us and protected us from a scientist who would like to use me for some crazy-ass experiment. Somehow she knew you needed me. I’m glad you took me home because I knew you were the one for me.” He stepped closer to her. “Hayden, I need your help. We aren’t legend, and some bad people know about me. You’ve got to help me.”

He crouched down before her and curled into a ball. His human form morphed into a cat. After a moment, the cat sat on his back legs and stared up at her. He even had the tiny white tuft on his chest — the same tiny white tuft like Godzilla had.

“Godzilla?” Hayden swayed on her feet. This wasn’t happening. Her cat was a cat, not a shifter. She collapsed on the nearest bench and rested her head in her hands.

A pair of bare feet strode over to her. She glanced at the legs connected to the feet. The man squatted down in front of her. The mystery man who claimed to be her cat. Tears blurred in her eyes. What else could she do? Laugh or cry?

“Hayden, honey, shifting destroys my clothes.” He tipped his head to look her in the eye. “Let’s go home. I’ll explain everything there. I’ll show you what I am.”

His phone beeped and vibrated in his hand. He tensed at the sound. The noise came back. He should look at the screen. Should. His heart hammered, and the lion clawed at him from within. He turned his attention from the big cat to the phone. A gigantic arrow with Justin’s photo in it bounced back and forth on the screen. He touched the arrow and held his breath. Justin had replied.

Hi. Saw you, too. I’d like to talk. Tell me about you.

Holy shit. Excitement rippled through him. The lion stood at attention within him, equally thrilled. Zeus blew out the breath he’d held. What should he say? He didn’t want to sound silly.

I’m thirty-three. Single. I work @ a shelter. He paused. What else should he add? I’m looking for love.

He hit send before he could delete the words he’d typed. He probably sounded ridiculous. When Justin replied, Zeus yelped. He glanced over at Joe, who didn’t seem to have noticed.

Love, huh? Are you a romantic?

A romantic? More like a horny bastard who wanted sex that might become love. He drummed his fingers on the desk. Answering would be smart.

Justin replied first. Oh. You’re unsure? I’m a romantic. There’s someone out there for everyone, and I’m looking for my someone.

Damn. Justin was a romantic or, at least, came across that way. Maybe, the sweetness was a little much, but oh well. He’d never know if he didn’t try. Want to meet? You sound like my kind of guy.

He wasn’t sure if he sounded that way since he’d bulldozed right over the romance part, but he was trying.

Can’t. No wheels.

Well, shit. He needed to get closer to Justin, despite knowing the sexy man was probably wrong for him. He had a car but wasn’t licensed yet. How about a virtual date? Those were a thing, right? We can talk on the video thing on here.

I’d like that.

Zeus paused. Things were moving too well. Part of him trusted Justin was being honest. The rest of him wasn’t even sure Justin wasn’t a farce. Are you real? Like not a fake profile or a bot or something? Is that even your actual picture?

That’s really me, lol. I’m wondering the same thing about you. You look like a comic book hero come to life.

He’d never heard that. Was Justin’s comment a good thing or bad? I’m real, too. I had my friend Markas show me how to take selfies. That photo is all me.

Markas? Justin replied. Your boyfriend?

No. My friend John’s husband. He refused to call Markas John’s “huslion”, despite John and Markas creating the term. The word sounded awkward to him. Besides, he didn’t want to scare off Justin. What if shifters freaked him out?

I got it. You’re in a commune?

A what? He’d never heard that word before. Markas and John referred to Sanctuary as a home for wayward shifters or a shelter. Not a commune. Were those terms nicer ways of saying a commune? He’d have to ask John or Joe later.

Do you have a web cam? You mentioned a virtual date. Why don’t we video chat?

Luke strolled out of the building and put on his sunglasses. He strode over to his car then tossed his jacket and his briefcase onto the backseat before climbing behind the wheel. He turned on the radio. One of his favorite songs played, so he blasted the tune and sang along as he drove down the lane away from the Sanctuary. Though the property sat on a state route, there wasn’t much traffic. He stopped just past the gate and checked the traffic before pulling onto the road. He started toward Oakdale, but at the single crossroads before the city limits, he noticed a beat-up brown truck.

He paused. People never abandoned cars by the intersection. They waited for the dirt turnaround about a mile down the road. Was there a problem? An accident? He normally would’ve kept going, but something called to him. He noticed a man behind the wheel of the vehicle. The need to help strengthened. For all Luke knew, the guy was having a heart attack or maybe a seizure. He needed to stop and help.

Luke pulled off in front of the vehicle and patted the gun he’d strapped to his hip. He kept himself current at the gun range but hadn’t needed the piece until now. He backed up alongside the vehicle and rolled his window down.

“Do you need help?” Luke asked. He kept one hand on the car’s shifter. “Buddy?”

The wide-eyed man stared at Luke. “What’s your name?”

“My…” This was odd. “Luke Stevens. I’m an attorney. I work with the Sanctuary.”

The guy bolted out of the truck and yanked on the passenger-side handle of the car. “Help me.”

“I don’t know you. Are you hurt? I can call the ambulance.” He didn’t unlock the door. For a split-second, he could’ve sworn he saw a lion in the man’s eyes. It had to be his imagination. He’d never seen the animal in Markas’ eyes, and he knew Markas was a shifter. Could this man be a shifter? Or the jerk sending the screwy emails?

“I’m not hurt yet. Please? I need help.” Another flash of the lion shone in the man’s golden eyes. “You were honest with me. I’ll be honest with you. My name is Saul Mason. I was born at the Philadelphia Zoo four years ago. I’ve been able to shift for a year, and the first time I shifted at the zoo, the workers thought someone had stolen me. They thought I was the thief. I didn’t steal a lion—I am the lion.”

“A shifter.” Luke had already been given that information, but he had to stay it out loud to make sense in his head.

“And you’re with the Sanctuary. Help me.” The pleading in Saul’s voice got to Luke. “Please?”

He unlocked the door. “Get in.” He could take Saul back to Sanctuary, and if nothing else, help him get established there. God knew Markas would see through Saul if the guy was lying.

Saul crawled into the car and locked the door. He hunkered down on the seat. “Fate’s a bitch, but at least, I found you and not him.” He put the window up. “I think I’m actually safe.”

“Did you need something—anything—from your vehicle?” Luke asked.

“No. It’s from a friend. Some people think I stole it, but I didn’t.” Saul curled up in the seat. “I’m not a good guy. I’ve done bad shit in order to stay alive. I didn’t steal the truck, but I don’t regret taking it. A man named Tucci swore I belonged to him. I don’t know what he wants, but it can’t be good.”

“Tucci? As in Anthony Tucci?” Luke put the car in gear and made an illegal U-turn in order to go back to Sanctuary.

“Oh God. Don’t tell me you work for him.” Saul scratched at the door handle. “I need to get out.”

“Stop.” Luke swatted at Saul. “No, I don’t.” He punched the gas. The faster he got to Sanctuary, the quicker he could unload Saul. “I don’t know where Tucci is. I’ve never met him, and no, I don’t work for him. He’s not high on my list, though.”

“You’re not a shifter.” Saul remained low in his seat, but his tone changed. He stared at Luke. “I can smell it. You’re not.”

“That’s how you know? My smell?” He’d showered that morning and put on antiperspirant. Hopefully, he didn’t stink.

“You’ve got a scent, yes. It’s not like a dirty smell. It’s just you, and my lion can tell. It’s what told me; you’re a safe person. Sometimes, my instincts have been off, but not this time. Most people freak out when the word shifter is used. You didn’t flinch.”

“I’m honored, but I’ve worked with shifters before. I never know what to expect with them, but I’m not scared, either.” He wouldn’t admit to his fear, though. For all he knew, Saul could snap and do something horrible to him. “My friends run the Sanctuary. They’ll help you as much as possible. As for the maybe-not-quite stolen truck, I should get that sorted out.” He should probably turn Saul in, too, but he’d worry about that later.

“I wasn’t lying. I didn’t steal it. The truck was given to me by the one human who actually believed I was a shifter.” Saul grasped Luke’s free hand. “I borrowed it because I needed to get away from the zoo. I had permission.” He faced Luke. “At the zoo was a keeper named Saul, and that was his truck. He didn’t want it, but he wanted to help me get away from Tucci. He saw me shift and didn’t flip out. He said shifters are natural creatures and should be respected. He helped me until the freak-out died down then he got me out of the zoo. He’s the reason I’m here and not in the enclosure or dead.”

“If I contact him, will he verify this information?” Luke asked. He turned back onto the Sanctuary lane and swiped his keycard in the reader. He wasn’t sure if he believed Saul—or whatever the shifter’s name happened to be—but he also wasn’t convinced the story was a lie.

“Yeah.” The shifter offered up a badge. “See this? This is his old one, but it’s got his information. I’m supposed to say I’m him if I get into trouble.” He pointed to the plastic card on the lanyard and sighed. “So you’ll help me?”

“John and Joe will wonder why I’m back here already.” Luke parked the car in front of the fountain. “Let’s go inside. You can tell them everything, and they’ll help you.”

“You’re not staying?”

“You can talk. Well, fuck me. That’s amazing. I thought you could, but since you don’t, I wondered. You’ve got a nice voice,” Cinders said. He grinned, his bright teeth standing out against his mocha skin. “You’re cute, too.”

Dillon longed to taste Cinders’ mouth and kiss him. Would it feel like heaven?

“So we’re supposed to be at a party tomorrow. I’ve got some costumes. Most of it is tear-away stuff, but it’ll work for one night. You’re welcome to try on anything I’ve got and find something that fits. I’ve got dibs on the naughty cop, though.” He laughed. The throaty sound echoed in the room. “Want to?”

Dillon almost asked what Cinders meant but nodded instead.

“What? I got one word out of you, and now, you won’t talk to me?” Cinders frowned. “If you’re going to use my clothes, you’ve got to speak to me.”

The wolf stood up within Dillon and watched Cinders. The animal tensed.

For a split-second, Dillon had thought Cinders meant he’d make Dillon fuck him for the clothes. He fought the urge to shake his head. Fucking to get things was part of his old life. He had a new one here at the Sanctuary.

Cinders smiled, and his shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry.”

“Why?” Dillon managed. Despite his best attempts, he couldn’t get out any other words. He spent most of his time tongue-tied, but around Cinders, something different happened. His wolf took notice, which was unusual. The wolf distrusted more individuals than his human side did. If the wolf cared to pay Cinders attention, then that meant something, right? He needed to keep an eye on the panther shifter.

“I’m being pushy,” Cinders said. “Ryan will tell you I’m good at pushy. Quiet? Not a chance. Look, you don’t have to talk. I can do that for both of us.” He waved to his end of the corridor. “Come over when you’re ready, and pick out a costume. The jaguar and I won’t bite. Promise.”

Dillon nodded. The first step to healing had to be getting out of his comfort zone. Going with Cinders was a leap. God help him, he really wanted to leap.

“Come here, tiger. We must speak,” Creighton mumbled to himself. “You’ve been tasked with defending the supers,” he continued. He knew his job. He’d been defending his friends as long as he could remember. But meeting with the sources? He wasn’t sure what they wanted. The sources, the oldest beings in the universe, had called on him. When the sources summoned a super, he or she was to drop everything and show up. He or she would learn their fate and accept what the sources planned. As far as he was concerned, he knew his fate—protecting his human, Vanessa, from the rogue hunters.

He stared at the rock walls of the cave of the sources. Who lived in such a rustic place? Sure, he was a tiger, and the animal preferred the outside, but bland black-and-gray walls with no illumination? Come on. He needed a way to see where he was going, energy…something not here. His shoes clunked on the hard-packed earth as he strode to the bit of brightness at the end of the cave. He noticed shadows moving in the faint glow. The sources? He’d found them? Cool. The words I’m here lingered on his tongue. Shouting to the ancient beings wasn’t bright. He’d wait for them to address him. The closer he got to the light, the slower he moved. A feeling of dread washed over him. This wasn’t going to be some nice, happy meeting. Nope. His tiger groaned. This wasn’t going to be pleasant at all.

“Come closer,” the Leader said. He leaned forward enough for Creighton to see his scraggly white beard. The hood obscured his face. The being pointed a long, bony finger at Creighton. “Do you know why you are here?’

“I’m here to learn my fate and to thank you for summoning me.” Creighton suppressed a smile. Never let it be said he had no manners. “I’m defending the supers, like you’ve asked.” He wondered what exactly the Leader was sitting on. Air? A rock chair? He couldn’t tell. Not knowing added to his growing alarm. Would they whisk him away to fight another part of the war and force him to leave his friends? Crazy thoughts, but then again, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

“You’re a cocky tiger.” The Leader turned over his palm. A flash of light flickered from the center of his hand. “You have been called upon because of the war. It has grown much worse than anticipated and is out of control. You need to be doing more than simply defending.”

Creighton nodded and tuned his thoughts to fight mode. “We cannot tell the rogue hunters from the main group. The defenders are trying their best, but without information, we feel we’re all working blind.”

“You are,” another source said. This one sounded female. “The supernatural races depend on you.”

“Wait.” Creighton disobeyed the cardinal rule of the sources and stepped closer to the ancient beings. “Me? Our merry band of misfits is a solid unit. You can’t mean that I am the only one who can stop this. You just told Kynan he was the one to end the war. This cannot wholly be on my head.” Good Goddess, he understood tactical maneuvers and reconnaissance, but playing with emotions and understanding the enemy weren’t his strong points.

The source cackled. “You will grow in numbers.”

“Great.” He liked the sound of the group getting larger. Maybe they’d find some more vampires and a couple more shifters to balance them out. Or they’d be given the opportunity to have children. One day he wanted to make lots of children with Vanessa, but the relationship was still new. “We can use all the help we can get, but you said to grow in numbers. Is having children soon a good idea?”

“Not so fast, tiger. Do you enjoy being in your human form?”

“Yes, very much.” But he didn’t like the tone change in the sources. “Why?” More of his surroundings came into view. Black and brown streaked on the walls along with something else—figures. He tipped his head. He should’ve been listening, but the images grabbed his attention. Some of the folk-art-type figures looked like animals.

“To keep the human form from being locked away forever, you must find your mate. It is time you accepted that part of your fate as well,” the source said, pulling his attention back to the situation.

“I believe I’ve found her.” Now they were getting somewhere. He’d known all along his fate lay with Vanessa and that she was his true mate. He thought about her in his dreams. Even if she turned him down, he knew where his heart belonged—with his pasha, Vanessa.

“You believe? Tiger, there is much more to finding a mate besides belief.”

He gritted his teeth. He assumed the sources would make the situation difficult, but not this much. “Vanessa is a suitable pasha. She’s a seer. She’s also beautiful, and we have perfect chemistry.” In and out of bed. So they’d only been together a few weeks and spent most of their time having sex. He knew his heart. He pressed his lips together to keep from spilling that tidbit of information. The sources didn’t need to know they had a great sex life.

“She is unworthy of you.”

“I don’t agree,” he snapped. Unworthy? Hell’s bells, she wasn’t worthy. She’d stood up to Brad and the other hunters when she could’ve easily run away. Her fortitude endeared her to him. He looked at the images again. The figures appeared to be moving. To tell the future?

“Your mate will need to be more than a seer. You are a tiger and must have a mate to match your power and strength.” The Leader leaned back in his seat, hiding himself almost completely in the shadows. The flame burning from his palm extinguished. “Do you wish to extinguish your power like this?”

As the Leader spoke, the image of a man faded, and a large cat took its place. A cat-shifter? The female beside that tiger vanished. Shit. Creighton’s stomach churned.

“What happens if I take the wrong person—or tiger—as my pasha?” He couldn’t risk losing Vanessa or proving the cave art correct.

“You will become useless to the cause. Your human form will recede, and the animal will become dominant.” The Leader blew the residual smoke from the fire toward Creighton. “Within a short time, you will go mad without your true pasha, and the hunters will have to eradicate you.”

Fuck. Creighton fought back his growing irritation. “So I can be happy with Vanessa and hope she is my true mate, or I can dump the woman I’m close to in order to help the supers win the war and maybe even find that elusive mate? Sounds swell.” He shook his head. “At least tell me who this pasha is I’m looking for. I’d hate to be wasting my time and energy for nothing.” The light grew dimmer, and he couldn’t see the Leader, but he felt the Leader’s icy stare. He stifled a shiver. “Just doesn’t seem right.”

“I cannot tell you the identity of your mate. You must find the person or super worthy enough to be your pasha. Someone worthy of a tiger.”

He already had found that person. His heart ached. They honestly wanted him to choose.

“Your time in your human form grows short. In less than three weeks’ time in human weeks, you must find your pasha. If you cannot find your mate or if you choose to take the wrong person”—the Leader stressed the word person—“you will suffer the consequences. Your tiger will take over, and you’ll be little more than a beast—a beast fighting madness. Understood?”

He didn’t have much choice. The moment he was born, his fate was sealed. “I understand.” He didn’t agree, but he accepted the word of the sources. Around him the world plunged into darkness. The cave walls disappeared, and the ground beneath him shifted. The sources called when they wanted a super and sent him or her back just as fast. Creighton stumbled and knocked into the hallway wall.

He collapsed on the carpet and weighed his options as he regained his bearings. Vanessa had been the only light in his life. She gave him reason for not giving up. But how could he keep seeing her while searching for his elusive mate?

Easy, he couldn’t. He’d have to pick one or the other.

But who would protect her, and how the hell was he going to sit back and allow another man to touch her? If the rogue hunters found out about her—and they would once the information from Brad’s killing got back to them—she’d be kidnapped or killed. Brad, Kynan’s pasha’s ex, caused a shit storm with his attempted murder on his friends. Soon, more anger and war would descend on the small group, and he refused to leave Vanessa alone in harm’s way.

She might not be his mate, but he wasn’t giving up his seer without a fight. Not a chance.

“Hey, you’re back.” Vanessa threw her arms around Creighton’s neck. “You scared me. I know this is a huge mansion and all, but don’t just disappear like that.”

“Huh?” He tugged her to his chest. Her brown eyes glittered. When she smiled, a little more of the ice around his heart melted. “I’m sorry. I spaced for a moment. Catch me up on what happened.”

Her eyebrows rose, and then she frowned. “Spaced?” She snorted and flipped her golden-blonde hair over her shoulder. “Okay, I’ll play along. You were going to get something for us to eat, and when I looked for you, poof! Gone! No CR in the hallway, kitchen, or anywhere else I looked. I screamed for Ky and Lexa when I saw the car was still in the garage. When I came back to the room, you’re here and acting like you’ve been a million miles away.”

“I kind of was.”

“Creighton.” Kynan, his friend the vampire and owner of the mansion, sprinted down the hallway. “What happened?” He stopped short. “You were summoned, weren’t you?”

“Yes.” The moment he replied, he wished he hadn’t been asked the question. He hated to admit he’d been summoned, because then he’d have to explain that Vanessa wasn’t his pasha. The color drained from Kynan’s pale face, but he didn’t say anything.

“Summoned? By whom and for what?” Vanessa slid out of his arms and stood. She smoothed her T-shirt down her curvy frame. “What’s going on, and why do I have a bad feeling about what you’re going to say?”

Shit. He knew this would happen. Creighton leaned against the wall and forked his fingers into his hair. “The sources called on me. It’s my time to find my mate and build up my power so we can fight the war.”

“When do we get started?” Vanessa asked. “I’m game.”

“It’s—it’s not that simple.” Kynan nodded and folded his arms. Once he’d found his pasha, Lexa, he’d been able to step out of the shadows and walk in the light. He was still a vampire but much more powerful. “Finding one’s mate can be life or death. Vanessa, you should go back to your suite and talk to Creighton.” He nodded and left them alone in the hallway.

“Yeah,” Creighton said and pushed off the wall. “This is complicated.”

“Okay.” Vanessa offered her hand. “Let’s do this thing. How do we make you all super and powerful?” She threaded their fingers together. “Hot sex? Special words? Hot sex and special words? Come on, I’m trying to lighten the mood a little.”

“I know you are.” He draped his arm around her shoulders. “I appreciate it.” He opened the door to the suite they shared. “It’s a long process, finding my mate. I need to soul search and follow my heart.”

“I’m right here. Done.” She bounced into the room ahead of him. “Now what?”

Creighton stood in the doorway. How the hell was he going to crush her spirit and tell her the truth when he wasn’t so sure the sources were correct? Down in his gut, he believed she was his pasha. “Like I said, it’s complicated. Sit, and we’ll talk.” And hopefully you’ll still count me as your friend when all of this is over.

Ryan ‘Blaze’ Burden knew his life wasn’t perfect. He’s a stripper at Stiff and a shifter, but he can’t tell anyone about his special ability. The popularity of shifters hasn’t come to Stiff or the town of Sugar Ridge, for that matter. Being a shifter is still frowned upon. Ryan knows he doesn’t fit in, but he does have one bright spot in his life—the mystery man who comes to the club and requests Ryan for private dances. The electricity between them is palpable, but if Ryan makes a move, will the hottie reciprocate?

Delaney Sullivan doesn’t come to Stiff for the ambiance. He’s there for one dancer—Blaze. He senses the shifter within the handsome young man. But Delaney works for the enemy—he’s the campaign manager for the mayor of Sugar Ridge. He doesn’t share the mayor’s desire to outlaw shifters because he’s a panther shifter. Can he get Blaze out of the club? To trust him? Or maybe even to love him?

These opposites certainly attract, but can they find the mutual trust to have a future together?

“You want me.”

“Yes, I do.” He needed to get through to Blaze. Not everyone wanted to use him. “I’d rather you didn’t dance for me.”

“Christ.” Blaze left Delaney’s lap. “I knew it. You’re trying to get me to quit.”

Shit. Yes, he wanted Blaze out of the business, but it wasn’t because he wanted to save all of the strippers.

“I’m not quitting. I make good money here, and I can keep on the down low. No taxes. Yeah, fuck you.” Blaze growled. “I can’t get my paperwork. I’m not allowed because I can’t document where I came from.”

“Why?” Every shifter had been given the right to gain a driver’s license, a job and a passport. Where Blaze had come from wasn’t an issue.

“No. I’m not doing it. I can’t. Look, tell management, but I can’t do this. I’ll take the hit.” Blaze shook his head again. “I can’t.”

Delaney took money from his pocket. He’d tucked a note between the bills, wanting Blaze to see it later. He pushed the cash into Blaze’s hand. “You’re a good man.”

He should say more but didn’t know what to do. He left his chair and ducked out of the private room. Embarrassment washed over him as he walked out of the club. Being there was dangerous. If someone recognized the head of the mayor’s campaign at a strip club, Delaney would lose his job. He made his way through the private exit and disappeared through the tunnel to the parking garage.

His panther craved Blaze. The big cat sensed Blaze’s confusion. Yes, the cash was good, but something about Blaze screamed that the shifter wanted to be a decent man. Delaney sighed and climbed behind the wheel of his car. Hopefully, Blaze would read the note and take him seriously. Maybe, there was a chance they could find common ground or even a friendship. A relationship was probably out of the question. Too bad, the cat didn’t care. Delaney wished his panther would settle down. There wouldn’t be any claiming tonight, and the panther would have to wait.
