Can love really strike twice?

Colin Dent knows what he wants out of life—his career at the advertising agency and his dog. Love is great, but he needs to know the guys in his life understand his dog is his family. He thought he had the perfect combination when he and Matt were a couple. But Matt didn’t stick around.

Matt Miller didn’t leave Colin because he wanted to—Colin hadn’t wanted him any longer. When Matt’s sister leaves her dog, Willie, with him for good, Matt not only understands separation anxiety, but how much it hurts to be forgotten. Then he sees Colin at the dog park. The old feelings rush in and he wants to open his heart, but he hasn’t forgotten the past.

Colin wants a second chance with Matt, but will the time and distance apart be too much to overcome? Or will the love of their dogs be enough to push these two former lovers back together for good?

Matt locked up before he climbed behind the wheel of the car again. He loved living in a small town. Everything was close enough that he could either drive or walk to most places. Tonight, though, he was too tired to walk to the park. He gripped the steering wheel. Jesus. He’d reverted to talking to his dog like a best friend. He needed to get out more. Oh, well. At least the dog is loyal.

He drove to the dog park and tried to calm his mind. The men he knew weren’t loyal. Since he’d split from Colin, he hadn’t found a decent guy who wouldn’t cheat. First, Scott had come along with his wandering eyes, then Tom had followed suit. Tom had felt the need to spread himself around. Maybe Matt had been too choosy? Maybe he wasn’t pushy enough? Maybe he’d set himself up for failure? No one understood him the way Colin had. Would anyone else?

Matt parked in the lot. He had to face his ex. Even if Colin wasn’t there, eventually, he’d have to see him again. He might as well brace himself. He clicked Willie’s leash on his collar, then led him over to the fenced-in area. Once inside the park, he let Willie run. His head hurt. He hated being lonely, but he wasn’t ready to open his heart—not again.

Willie darted by with a white puff. Matt recognized the two pink bows in the dog’s fur. “Judy?” Damn it. He’d hoped that by running late, he’d miss Colin.

“Hi, you.” Colin strode up to Matt. “Seems those two have a radar set for each other.”

“Yeah.” He tensed. Seeing Colin brought up too many tough memories and too much hurt. He’d have to resign himself to being around his ex and his heart being broken each time.

“I brought you coffee.” Colin held up a paper cup. “I thought you might like a drink.”

He tossed the ball for Willie, then turned to Colin. “Thanks, I think.” He didn’t take the cup. “Won’t Mason be upset with you? Bringing me coffee…that’s awfully chummy.”

“No.” Colin offered the cup again. “Here. Take it.”

He complied but glanced about. “Where is Mason?”

“Probably at work.” Colin tipped his head. “I don’t care where he is. He’s not my problem.”

“What?” He knew Colin better than he’d thought and this wasn’t Colin. His ex wasn’t a cheater. “Do you and Mason have an open relationship?”

“Wow,” Colin said. “I didn’t expect you to ask that.”

“Why not? If I were your…person…and you brought coffee to your ex while I knew nothing, I’d be hurt. Won’t Mason be upset?” Matt asked.

“I don’t doubt he’ll be mad.” Colin stepped in close to Matt. “He hates your fucking guts.” His eyes flashed. “For real.”

Matt bit back a groan. He’d guessed Mason wasn’t his biggest fan, but to hate his guts? Lovely. Yet, here was Colin, close to him and grinning. No wonder Mason wasn’t thrilled. He didn’t have a rein on Colin. Matt hated himself. The closer Colin got, the more he wanted to kiss him. Now isn’t that fucked up?

That Doesn’t Happen… Until It Does with @meganslayer #petsinbooks

_Penfield Book 1

I was at breakfast this morning and talking to friends of mine about things only pet owners understand. We all have dogs and cats and shared stories about crazy things the dogs do.

I bring this up because one of my books, actually a couple of them do, but in one particular short story the cat the couple owns shows up when they’re in the midst of getting close. I’ll let you figure out what was going on. The cat hangs out and is pesty when they characters are getting close. The pair decide maybe they should shoo the cat away or go into the other room. I’ve been told by some readers that what happened–the cat being nosy and showing up–doesn’t happen.

That’s what made me laugh and bring it up at breakfast. I’ve never had a dog that wasn’t nosy and didn’t show up at the wrong time. I’ve never had a cat who didn’t believe cleaning themselves should take place when it’s not appropriate.

I’m not alone. We talked about how the dogs will show up when it’s not right or will watch no matter what. I’ve got a particularly clingy dog and she has to be wherever I am. I’ve been followed into the bathroom and protected while showering. Yeah, she’s clingy.

One friend mentioned her dog has to be right with her at all times. Another bathroom visitor. Another friend mentioned how her cat has to sleep on her pillow…right next to her head. Oh, and don’t think about moving the cat because that’s really the cat’s pillow.

I’m guessing some people don’t have pushy, nosy critters like we do. I know of some who keep the animals out of the bedroom at night or don’t let them on the bed. Whatever works. So maybe people don’t have the same problems I do, but that doesn’t mean fiction doesn’t always go along with fact. Grin.

What about you? Do you have pushy pets? Is it just me?

Schedule, Schmedule… Making Time with @meganslayer #iamwriting #schedule

Old_book_bindings 1.jpg

I’m trying a few different things this year. I’ve taken some time off from blogging when things got crazy at home. You’d think snow days would mean lots gets accomplished. Not at my house. I end up losing time on writing. I gain it with the family, but my writing gets pushed to the background. Someone once told me I needed to have a set time every day to write. I needed to be disciplined.

I’m a known pantser. I have plans in my notebooks, but I let the characters run when they start talking. Same thing goes with my writing. If I’ve got a set deadline, then I bust my hump to get the story done. If I’ve got a little more time or a loose deadline, then I go when the characters talk. I’m good under pressure, but I hate having pressure all the time.

But having a set period of time during the day to write? Yeah, that doesn’t happen in my house. Not because my family are demanding. They aren’t. But I’m not just a writer. I’m a mom, too. I’m a pet mom. Today was a good example of why setting out specific time to write isn’t my thing.

When I opened the laptop and brought up the document to start adding to my latest story, one of the dogs got sick. Computer down, cleaned mess up. Sit down, start reading through what I’ve written to get caught up and another dog has to go outside. Computer down, dog outside. It’s cold (it was -20 with the windchill at times), so I have to keep an eye on the pup while he’s out. Bring him in, sit down and start working. Dog behind the couch…don’t know what she’s doing, but it can’t be good. Still not sure what she’d found, but again, had to put the laptop down. This was the time I had to myself and planned out for writing. So much for writing. I just can’t get into the headspace to write bondage when a dog is getting sick in the background.

So I’ll wait until later to write. I’ve got a couple hours after everyone goes to bed and maybe I’ll get a few words down then. Maybe not. But you can’t say I’m not trying. Grin. What about you? Does this happen to you? Ever get bogged down with other stuff and don’t get down to whatever it is you’re supposed to be doing? I’d love to know.

But yes, I am writing. Grin.

The Actor and Dog off the Chain ~ By @MeganSlayer #mmromance #novel #pets #dogs

Odd title for a blog post, right? I know it is. Follow me here. It’ll make sense in a moment.

When I wrote the book, What’s His Passion? Wild Card, I knew I had two strong characters—Kris and Zayn. I knew they were the focus of the book, but side characters can be just as important.

I’m an animal lover. I really am. Having three cats and three dogs, you could say I live in a zoo. You’d be right. When the mailman knocks on the front door, it’s a five-alarm panic. But I love it and this love showed up in Wild Card. Kris is a wounded man. He needs more than a lover. He needs a few friends, too. My dogs are great companions. They don’t talk back—although I’m convinced some of the barking is sassing—not that I mind. They stay beside me when I’m blue and are great for exercise. So how does this match up to Kris? And why would I bring a dog into a story about a gay man in porn?

In Wild Card, Kris lives in a nice private development, but even in the nicest places, wicked people exist. His next-door neighbor has a dog. You’ve probably seen the type—the dog is constantly outside. There’s no grass under the dog house and the circle he runs. Rain, shine, heat, cold…the dog is there. Kris sees a bit of himself in the dog next door. They’re both wounded. The dog needs attention and love. So does Kris.

So Kris’s in porn. He believes he can reach a little higher in life. He believes the same thing for the dog. They’re kindred spirits. The dog is a pit bull, so people think he’s dangerous. He’s actually very sweet and goofy. But out on the chain, he comes across as scary. He really wants attention. Same thing for Kris. People see the porn actor and think he’s dirty or nasty. He’s so much more once someone unlocks his potential.

Here’s an Easter egg for you—the dog is named Nugent. According to the neighbor, he’s named after Ted Nugent. That’s not where I got the name. I’m a huge Cincinnati Bengals fan and the kicker for the team during the writing of Wild Card happened to be named Nugent. The dog is named after a professional athlete. Grin.

Now I have to admit I’m the kind of person who can’t stand to see the dog/cat/etc hurt in a book or movie. For the dog in Wild Card, the feeling was no different. Nugent is a sweet dog. He and Kris as well as Zayn have to have a happy ending. Want to know what the happy ending is? Then you’ll have to read What’s His Passion? Wild Card. I hope you enjoy the love and the dog.

Here’s a little bit about What’s His Passion? Wild Card:

Following his heart and passion will be his biggest role of all.wildcard_800 1

Kris Hunter wants out. He’s done pornographic films for the last six years. The pay’s been good, but his creativity is nearly dead. His passion is to act and to be a star on the big screen in mainstream films. When he auditions for famed casting director, Zayn Mason, he’s convinced he’s on the right path. He doesn’t want to take the casting couch route to success, but he certainly wants Zayn in his bed. Can he follow his dreams and the man he desires or will forces beyond his control derail his progress?

Zayn Mason sees the potential in Kris. As a casting director, he looks for the right actor to fill the roles in movies. He’s seen plenty of talent come and go, but no one stirs his soul both creatively and physically like Kris. But Zayn knows the pitfalls of the movie industry. Crossing over from porn isn’t easy and Hollywood isn’t always forgiving. Besides, he’s got demons of his own. Can these men get beyond their pasts and find a future together under the bright lights of the silver screen?

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of voyeurism and intimacy with multiple partners.

Being a Writer and Pet Parent…with Megan Slayer

I’m a vocal pet person. I love cats, dogs, bunnies… well, you get the idea. I need critters around my house because they keep me sane.

I’ve got three dogs and three cats. To say the least, it’s a zoo. But I love them. I do. I’ve always said I have a soft spot for critters with issues. One cat thinks he’s a dog. One cat hates…everyone…sometimes even me. The third cat I’m pretty sure doesn’t have any bones in his body. He’s liquid. One dog, the water dog, is deathly afraid of water. Another dog swears she’s a person and she’s the mother of my kid. Then there’s my shadow dog. If I’m not there, she’s not happy. She’s got serious separation anxiety.

So now you might be wondering what all of this has to do with writing. Sometimes I wonder, too.

Okay, no. I know, but bear with me.

I’m sitting here trying to decide what to write about. I mean, I’m a writer. I have ideas. I have characters talking to me. Writing shouldn’t be hard.

Now factor in critters. One dog wants me to pet him. Another wants to sit on the cushion RIGHT next to me. He breathes on the computer and plugs the fan. Okay… gotta move. I head to the desk. One cat wants to sit behind me on the office chair. So much for proper posture. Another cats wants to knock EVERYTHING down because he’s not getting attention and/or fed on his time. The third cat shows up just to sleep on the desk beside the computer because he has to keep me company. I don’t mind him being there. He sheds all over everywhere, but it’s not that big of a deal.

Enter the dogs. The one who can’t live without me has to stroll by and toot before she jumps onto the couch in the office. The second one wants to chase the cat sleeping by the computer. Growls, howls and hissing ensues. Third dog strolls by, leaving a stench trail, before she heads upstairs to sleep on the landing.

Now I’m supposed to write characters having sex. Hmm. I’m pretty sure I’ll have to let the room air out and a few critters go to sleep before I get anything written.

Such is the glamorous life of a writer.
