An After Dark Novella

Can a faerie running from trouble and a demon full of it make love work?

Jessica’s never been the favorite faerie in the family. She’s rough around the edges and runs with a dangerous crowd. She wants to be loved, but who wants the daughter of the head faerie? She’s got secrets that could be deal breakers. Guys don’t want to date faeries and she’s tired of dead ends. Isn’t there one good man interested in being with a dark faerie?

Although Lane plays a mage on television, it’s just a role. No one cares that he’s a demon—not even Jessica. He senses the darkness within her, but there’s something else. She’s not like the others he’s met before. He wants to save her, even if only from herself. Will she accept the love of a demon, or run away before he has a chance to prove he’s worthy of a faerie?

“You’re one strange demon.”

“Because I’m not biting your head off? Cursing you? Throwing you into the pits of Hell?” he asked. “Or something else I missed?”

“Because you’re not expecting me to jump into bed with you—yet—and you’re acting human. I still expect you to try to kill me or cast me into Hades, but not here. It’s too public,” she said. “Besides, you don’t know my name.”

“I can be scary if you’d like, but I don’t kill unless I have to and no, I don’t. Mine’s Lane.” He held out his hand. “It’s nice to meet you…?”

“Jessica.” She shook hands with him, then recoiled. “You’re steaming.”

“It’s part of being a demon.” His fingers tingled from her touch. He wanted more. “I promise not to cast you anywhere you don’t want to go.”

“Right.” She turned on her heel and left.

He stared at the vacant space where she’d been and shook his head. His radar was never wrong. The chemistry between them was strong. He knew it. Why didn’t she? When she held the microphone, his cock stood at attention. The sound of her voice made his heart beat faster. Her comments got him rock hard. Then there was her body—curves where a woman should be curvy, tits big enough for his hands and that ass… Christ, he wanted to gaze into her dark eyes and hold her. She captivated him like no other.

“You didn’t work on her hard enough,” Caroline snapped.

“You blew it,” Elaine added. “We’ll be stuck like this forever.”

“I’ve been a demon for a hundred years, girls. You’re lucky.” Lane tossed the publicity photos onto the table and folded his arms. He debated his choices. He could stalk the faerie, but that would be too weird. She’d said she worked at a bar. What if he showed up at the establishment? He could say he’d heard about the place and needed to see it for himself.

He’d rather she’d call him because he wanted to hear her voice again. Given the chance, he’d love to hold her. He’d strip her down and taste every inch of her body.

Power surged within him. Maybe she couldn’t save his soul, but she’d brought his dormant soul back to life and he wasn’t ready to quit. Was it possible he’d found his soulmate?

She slipped through the doorway and into the foyer. She could breathe again. She passed into the main room, then up to the second floor. A group sat in the largest room in mid-discussion. Malachi, the wolf shifter who ran the parish, led the group.

“We can’t let the vampires govern the world,” Malachi said. “It’s not right.”

“Vampires being in charge of everything might not be right, but it’s the rule of the land,” a man she didn’t know said.

She shuddered and kept going. Vampires. The humans thought they were so great. They were considered scary, but hauntingly beautiful. Right. They’d been venerated. Jesus. The vampires had used their magnetism to convince the humans to hand over control. How beautiful were they now? The Fae King was dead, the humans were food and shifters were banned. If there were any Fae left, she didn’t know and hadn’t seen them. But everyone had initially claimed they were living their best life with the vampires in charge?

She removed her scarf and made her way to the bedrooms. Most were full, but sometimes she’d luck out. Maybe she’d even snag a few hours of sleep—if she found an empty room. She knocked on the door. “Hello?” She knocked again. “Hello?”

“It’s empty.” A girl with fiery red hair smiled, but never met her eyes. She ducked into another room.

“Thanks,” Sabra called. She turned the handle. When she entered the room, she flicked her fingers. A spark shot off her fingertips. Her heart leapt. She’d created some magic. Even if it had lasted only a moment, she’d done it. Glitter remained on her fingertips, but the more she tried to recreate the magic, nothing happened. Hope blossomed in her heart. The magic might not be dead.

She collapsed on the mattress. Part of her wanted to fiddle with the magic again and attempt to stretch her wings. The rest of her gave in to the bone-deep weariness. She needed to sleep. The vampires had used too much of her blood and if she didn’t recharge, she’d die.

Even love witches get the blues.

“I wanted to thank you in person for the candle. It’s very pretty.” He snapped his lips shut. Damn it. He sounded stupid. “I don’t know what I’ll use it for, but they make the house smell nice.” Shit.

She stared at him, but didn’t say anything.

“I suck at small talk.” And apparently trying to sound smooth in front of beautiful women. “What”—Neil picked up a tiny bottle filled with amber liquid—“exactly do you do here? And what is this?”

“I’m a witch.”

Matter-of-fact, no inflection in her voice. Factual and blunt. What would it take to make her smile? Blush? Call out his name when he pumped into her pussy? Oh shit, he needed to get his thoughts away from sex.

He paused a moment to make sure that he’d heard her right. “A witch?”

“Yes, and I make the potions the people in town rave about. I’m not Madame Scarlett and neither is Cian. I thought everyone in town knew, but hey, you might not have. She’s just the name I picked out when my Aunt Siobhan turned the store over to me. Cian likes red, so her hair is red and she lets everyone think she’s Madame.” Havan folded her hands on the glass display case. “I heard you say you wanted something for your sister. I remember her, vaguely. Her then boyfriend came in looking for a love potion. I gave him one and it seems to have worked.”

“Kasen?” The guy had used a love potion? He knew the general story, but to hear Melissa talk, it was love at first sight. The spell or potion or whatever came a lot later.

“Sounds right.” Havan shrugged. “They got what they wanted.”

Well, what do you know? Neil pointed to the bottle with the amber stuff inside. “This? Is this what they used?” He needed to keep her talking.

“Yes.” She wore two rings per hand, each ring set with a huge stone—one in red and one in black. “This one will get you a date and this one will get you forever.” She tapped the top of a black bottle. “Cian claims we have potions for revenge and greed, but they don’t work.”

“Why not?” He picked up one of the black bottles. “If I cast a spell for a negative reason, then that negativity will come back to me threefold. It sucks.” She tucked a lock of darker blue hair behind her ear. A selection of hoop earrings dangled from her ear, starting at the top and following down to her earlobe. “I learnt my lesson a long time ago. Don’t cast what you can’t handle.” For the first time since he’d seen her, she smiled and laughed. “You will totally regret it.”

“I hear you.” Neil gripped the bottle. The more she talked, the more he wanted to listen to her. His cock pushed against his pants and he mashed the bulge into the front of the display case to ease his ache. “My sister already fell in love, so she doesn’t need this. Think it’ll help me?”

Havan sighed. “It will, but you have to accept whoever is chosen. What you want might not be what you get, but she will be the one your heart truly desires.”

Her words stopped him cold. She wasn’t a thing like he expected and she sure as shit wasn’t his type and yet he couldn’t help but want to see her. “I’ll take it and whatever it was your friend went upstairs to find.”

“Oh. Okay.” Havan wrote up the bill on a receipt pad. “Give her a moment.”

“I will.” Neil clutched the bottle tighter. A witch. No wonder the people around town talked ill of Madame Scarlett’s. No one knew what the hell they were dealing with. But Havan didn’t strike him as a witch. No green skin or huge warts. Maybe he’d been watching too much television. The bracelets on her wrist jangled as she wrote.

“I know my sister was being forward, but I’ve got a question.” He wanted to see her again. Had to. “Would you accompany me to my sister’s wedding?”

“What?” Her eyes widened again, displaying the ring of dark blue surrounding her pupils. The lighter blue flecks sparkled. Would she look at him that way during sex? He hoped so. Hoped she’d give him a chance, too.

“Well, you brought them together.” Stupid, stupid. He took one of the business cards and flipped it over, then wrote his phone number and the date of the wedding. “My name is Neil and I know this is a shitty way to ask you out, but I really am drawn to you.” He slid the card to her. “No strings, but if you’d like to go with me, I’d love to see you.”

Callum folded his arms, then stared out the window. The Cleveland skyline glittered below them, and gulls swirled on the breeze. He rubbed his forehead and sighed. He’d been away for too long. Everything looked normal and completely different at the same time. Of all the things he missed, he wanted to see Sarah again. Everything about her had imprinted itself on his brain. He could almost smell the fresh scent of her shampoo and the silk of her skin. His wolf growled and paced. Memories of her weren’t enough.

She made his heart beat and his wolf calm, but the damned job had kept him away from her. He hadn’t talked to her in so long, but he highly doubted she’d waited for him. A beautiful woman like her probably had men calling her every night. All he could do now was hope she’d still talk to him.

“Hey.” Ansen’s footsteps thumped on the plush carpet behind him. “I’m glad to see you’re back in time.”

Callum turned around and unfolded his arms, then shook hands with his best friend and cousin. “I’m glad to be back.” Out of habit, he sniffed the air. He knew his cousin like the back of his hand, but he couldn’t suppress the instinctual need to check his surroundings. His wolf settled.

“Looks like you picked up some great demos while you were away.” Ansen slid his finger over the tablet, then sat down on his leather armchair. “Proud of you.”

“Thanks,” Callum mumbled.

“Can’t wait to meet the bands.” Ansen scooted the tablet away from him on his desk, then leaned back in his seat. “Are you okay? You look like you could rip out my throat.”

“No, I’m — I need to talk to you.” He sank down in the leather chair across from the desk. “Things are complicated.”

“You met another wolf and are afraid she won’t fit into the pack? There’s only the four of us, now that Krieg showed up.”

“No.” He frowned. “I meant with Sarah. How did you know Willow was your counterpart?”

“The first time we made love I knew. Instincts.”

“Really?”

“Really. Sarah’s still angry you walked away from her. Trust me — Willow lets me know all the time.” Ansen sighed and laced his fingers together. “Why? Do you think she’s yours?”

“I tried to call her. Many times.” A dull ache started at the base of Callum’s skull. Sarah managed to stay on his mind, no matter how many times he tried to forget her.

“And?” Ansen leaned forward, resting his elbows on his desk.

“The calls never went through. It’s stupid. We — I can’t get her out of my system, and yet I can’t get in touch with her. I think she’s mine. She’s sweet and wild and everything I want.”

“Yeah, don’t give me any more details. I love her like a sister, and I don’t need to know what you two did.”

“Har.” If anyone could be droll, Ansen was the man. Callum rolled his eyes. “There isn’t much to tell. I want her, I left her. She’s angry with me and rightly so. If I had any brains, I’d leave her the hell alone so she could move on with her life.”

“Go to her house.”

“Bitter isn’t a good color on you.”

Paul tapped the remote, silencing the television. He could’ve sworn he heard someone besides the people on the screen talking. The voice sounded like Tristan, but that was impossible. Tristan Evans had died two years ago.

“Come on, Paul. Hasn’t it been long enough?”

Damn it. That had to be Tristan’s voice, but from where? He glanced around the room. With the exception of the cat, he was alone. He’d locked the front and back doors and checked the house to ensure everything was safe. Right after Tristan had died, he could’ve sworn he’d heard Tristan talking to him. The shrink dismissed the voice as being a figment of Paul’s imagination and longing. Paranoia, the shrink called it. Paul only lasted the rest of the session before finding a new psychiatrist.

Hearing Tristan had to be a figment of Paul’s imagination—again.

“If you won’t properly speak to me, I’ll stop coming to you.”

Paul squeezed his eyes shut. In his mind he saw Tristan leaning against the bedroom doorframe. He wore his favorite ratty, body –hugging blue jeans, no socks or shoes and the old Flashes shirt he loved. The muscles in his arms bulged and his dark hair flopped over his forehead. His blue eyes blazed as he tipped his head to the side. Even as a memory, he sent warm shivers through Paul’s system.

“You’ve got to stop hating the holiday we both loved. Hate won’t bring me back.” Tristan strode towards him and hooks his thumbs in his front pockets. “Cheer up. Please?”

Tears slipped down Paul’s cheeks. The hurt he’d bottled up for the better part of the last two years came back in a rush. “I know I should, but I can’t. I lost you and seeing all of the Halloween decorations makes that loss so fresh and raw. I can’t do it. I love you, but I can’t keep ripping myself open.”

“Then keep loving me.”

Paul wiped his face and opened his eyes. He needed to get his shit together. Talking to a figment of his imagination wasn’t going to help his situation. Still, the words poured out of him. “How? How do I forget the man I love?”

Tristan sat opposite him on the bed. “You keep my memory alive, thus keeping me alive.”

Paul blinked. He’d opened his eyes. There was no way Tristan could be on the bed with him. No way. He’d buried his lover. “You’re a ghost. Ghosts don’t exist. What the fuck is going on?” He scrambled off the mattress and landed on the floor with a thud. One of the pillows flopped over onto him and he shoved it away. His mind had to be playing tricks on him. “No. Ghost do not exist.”

“Technically I’m not a ghost, but you’d be surprised.” Tristan—or what sure as hell lookedlike Tristan—sighed and stood. He turned his back on Paul. “It all comes down to rules and you know how much I hate rules.” He glanced over his shoulder and smiled. “I found a way around the rules.”

Paul rounded the bed and placed himself between Tristan’s ghost and the cat. No one hurt Milo—not even a crazy ghost who claimed to be Paul’s ex-boyfriend. “I don’t know who you are or why you’re doing this, but the joke is over. You had your fun and old Paul looks like a moron. You won, now get the hell out of my house.”

“Aww, honey, I’m not trying to dupe you.” The man strolled across the room to the bed. “Paul, I’m here.”

How about an excerpt?

Hunting helpless creatures seemed inhumane. Emily clutched her shotgun tighter and gritted her teeth.

“We’ve got to search high and low for these creeps. They could be anywhere and dangerous as hell,” Ben said and rushed in front of her.

She winced. Everything her partner said revolved around killing supers. She suppressed a groan. They could see the supers. She and Ben both possessed supernatural blood, allowing them to pursue their specific calling—hunting the supers as true hunters. The job description included killing supers in order to terminate those who went mad and were essentially dangerous to the rest of the population. They hunted the supers who’d gone rogue. No one said a word about killing the vampires, shifters, and faes—among others—simply for the sake of taking lives. According to Ben, they needed to eliminate all supers.

Emily trudged behind him. She could hold her own up front and defend herself from the attacks with ease, but she wanted distance from Ben. The negative vibe swirling around him unnerved her.

“I see it,” Ben shrieked. He bolted away, leaving her in the pitch-black woods. She gazed into the darkness and focused. She didn’t hear a sound, not even the critters creeping around, and that wasn’t right. There should’ve been something in the brush moving if he’d spotted anything. She crinkled her nose. The scent of a being came to her…dead? Decaying? Dead things left a definite gross smell behind, but this wasn’t the scent of decomposition. This particular pungent odor reminded her of a wet tiger or charred hair. What was it?

A round object caught her attention. Nothing in the woods was perfectly rounded…not like a shoe. She glanced over to where Ben had taken off to, and when she didn’t see him, she crouched to look at whatever it was in the brush. She figured she’d hear Ben coming when he returned. Unlike vampires, Ben wasn’t stealthy. Freight trains were quieter than her partner. She didn’t see him when she looked again. Thank God.

Emily crept up to the rounded thing and studied it closer. The thing was a shoe, connected to a foot. Were other hunters leaving their kills in the forest now? If the person was indeed a super, then the body wouldn’t be around—it would’ve disintegrated. A human body would decompose but still be evident. She moved the leaves aside. The leg led to a full body. The person was so still. She glanced around again and uncovered the face. The guy’s mouth was open, allowing her to see his teeth. Sharp, bright white teeth.

A vampire.

“If I don’t let Godzilla out, I won’t have curtains. Again.” Hayden stepped outside the restaurant and jabbed the numbers on her phone to call her friend, Cole. She needed a ride home.

She clutched her pepper spray in one hand and her purse in the other. No way she’d let some creep-o terrorize her. “I’ve got to get to Godzilla,” she chanted as she waited for her friend to pick up the phone. “I never should’ve let that asshole take me out. Damn grabby hands.” Visions of shredded curtains and one pissed off black cat came to mind. But just like a dog or his monster namesake, if he didn’t have time to wander around the backyard, he destroyed things in her house.

“You never should’ve gone to lunch with him,” a voice said. “Not on Halloween.”

Hayden screamed and whipped around, her purse leading the way. If she was going down, she’d go down swinging. “Who the hell are you?”

The person who’d spoken stepped out of the shadows. “Chill.” He put both hands up. “I’m not armed.”

Hayden inched closer to get a better look at him. Dear God in Heaven, the man was naked and in front of a restaurant full of people. Her gaze roved down his lean torso to the thatch of black hair at the base of his cock. She swallowed hard. Naturally, the crazy man would be good looking. Her luck didn’t run any other way.

“Hayden, honey, I don’t want to hurt you.”

A shiver ran up her spine. Didn’t want to hurt her? How the fuck did he know her name? “Who are you?”

“Godzilla. It’s a stupid name for a cat. My brother would be named Godzilla. He likes to bite and scratch. Although, naming him Fang worked, too. Hildy thinks it’s funny to name us after things we do.” He shrugged. “I just destroyed that set of curtains by accident. I never meant to piss you off.” The man folded his arms. His black hair shimmered, and his eyes glowed the same shade of green as her cat’s. He even had the same odd way of staring at her as if he knew what she was thinking, and he talked like he knew all about her cat.

“Do you want my purse?” She stuck out her hands. “Take it.” The guy might remind her of her cat, but cat shifters were the stuff of legend. Besides, didn’t Halloween bring out the crazies? Yes, he was some lunatic in character trying to scare the shit out of her… and it was working. She shivered. “Take it.”

“I’m taking you home.” He swatted her hands down. “There’s a long story I need to tell you, but the short of it is, yes, I’m a shifter. I chose you as my human, and now I’d like to go home and explain where you won’t freak out.” He inched toward her. “I won’t hurt you, but I will rip the limbs off the asshole who dicked you over at lunch. Now let’s go. It’s freezing, and I’m not fond of showing my ass off in public.”

“No.” She held her ground. “I don’t know you from Adam and you want me to take you home? No way, buddy. Blow.”

“Now that’s just mean.” He scratched his brow. “Okay, look, I come from a long line of shifters. Black cat shifters. My litter had four. Hildy knew about us and protected us from a scientist who would like to use me for some crazy-ass experiment. Somehow she knew you needed me. I’m glad you took me home because I knew you were the one for me.” He stepped closer to her. “Hayden, I need your help. We aren’t legend, and some bad people know about me. You’ve got to help me.”

He crouched down before her and curled into a ball. His human form morphed into a cat. After a moment, the cat sat on his back legs and stared up at her. He even had the tiny white tuft on his chest — the same tiny white tuft like Godzilla had.

“Godzilla?” Hayden swayed on her feet. This wasn’t happening. Her cat was a cat, not a shifter. She collapsed on the nearest bench and rested her head in her hands.

A pair of bare feet strode over to her. She glanced at the legs connected to the feet. The man squatted down in front of her. The mystery man who claimed to be her cat. Tears blurred in her eyes. What else could she do? Laugh or cry?

“Hayden, honey, shifting destroys my clothes.” He tipped his head to look her in the eye. “Let’s go home. I’ll explain everything there. I’ll show you what I am.”

Excerpt:

“Andy swears it’s possible—you being alive somewhere in there.” His mascara smeared as he rubbed under his eyes. “Is it? Are you really in that rock?”

Come here and find out.

He stood, then climbed onto her pedestal. He held onto her wings, then her shoulders. “You know those wings are great, doll. If you are real, I want to know who makes them. I want a set. They’ll be great when I club. We can look like underwear models together.” He trailed his fingers down her cheek and traced her lips. “You’re beautiful. Whoever sculpted you outdid themselves.” He shrugged. “I don’t know anything about sculptures, but you’re…I don’t have words.”

No sculptor, just me.

He rested his forehead against hers. “I can almost feel your skin. It’s like there’s really skin beneath mine, but that’s not possible. You’re stone or whatever.”

His breath warmed her face and hunger shimmered in his eyes. He reminded her of Lydos, but stronger. Tingles shot through her. He could be the one. He caressed her shoulders as a lover might. Kiss me. Free me from this curse.

He leaned back for a moment, then faced her again. “This is crazy. Nuts. Bonkers.”

So?

“If you were real, I’d kiss you all over. I’d have to taste you. Then I’d run my fingers through your hair. I’d suck on your titties until you screamed,” he murmured. “Once you’ve come at least twice, I’d sink my dick into you. I bet you’d feel like heaven.”

She wanted to kiss him and do all the things he’d mentioned. Zeus, why in the name of Hades did you have to curse me?

The man tilted his head and brushed his lips across hers. She flexed her fingers, then opened her mouth to deepen the kiss. A moan rumbled in her throat. For the first time in thousands of years, she could hear the sound. She touched his hip. Zeus, she’d done it. She’d found the person who could free her. This man had broken the curse. She wanted to memorize this moment for the rest of eternity so she could savor it later. This man made her happy, even if she barely knew him. They could have the time of their lives and would if she got her way.

First, she needed to learn the name of her savior, her beautiful hero.
