Footsteps crunched on the dry grass. He glanced over his shoulder. He wasn’t sure why, but he’d expected to see his ex-boyfriend Mike. Maybe they weren’t good together, but Mike had a way of knowing when Denver was low. He focused on the person walking up to him.

This wasn’t Mike.

Recognition swept over him. He knew the man. Jett Dawson, Deiken’s partner.

Oh shit. The last time he’d spoken to Jett, they’d argued. Jett screamed at him and he’d called Jett an asshole. Back then, he hadn’t known the score and blamed Jett for his brother’s passing. Now he knew better.

The guilt came rushing back to Denver. He wasn’t sure what to say to his twin’s partner.

“Denver.” Jett stopped beside him.

“Jett.” He wanted to be cool and not lose his temper. Deiken’s actions were his own–not Jett’s fault. Besides, Denver had blown his chances at conversation in the past. How did he know now would be different?

“I miss him,” Jett said. He stuffed his hands into his board short’s pockets. “It’s not the same at the plant without him.”

“I bet.” He turned his attention to Jett, but didn’t really see him.

“I come here a lot. I must miss you, since this is the first time I’ve run into you in six months.” Jett sighed, then faced away from the grave. “Can–can we talk? Not exchange pleasantries, but really talk? Not here.”

Denver paused. This could end up therapeutic or really bad. They tended to argue, not talk. But still. If Jett needed someone, he’d try to be there. “I’ve got coffee at the house and it’s quiet. Or lemonade.” He’d always been attracted to Jett, but never said anything because of Deiken. Jett wanted his brother, not him. Then Deiken passed and the argument happened. He doubted once he and Jett talked that Jett would have much to do with him, but he’d give the conversation a shot.

“Coffee or lemonade sounds good.” Jett rocked on his feet. “Really good.”

“Want a minute alone with Deik? I can head to the farm and start the coffee.” Truth be told, he simply needed some separation from his brother’s partner.

“I’m good. I’ve talked to him so many times. Not just here. We talk at the office, the apartment and when I run.” Jett chuckled. “I bet he’s tired of hearing from me.”

“Nah. He loved you.” Denver knew that down to his soul. Deiken always discussed Jett and their life together. “You were his world.”

“Sometimes things aren’t what they seem.” Jett started away from Denver, then paused. “Let’s go to the farm. I know the way.”

Dylan.

He shouldn’t say anything. Should keep on walking.

“Hi there. Do you come here often?” Hell. Of all the things he could’ve said, Chase picked one of the worst pick-up lines…ever.

Dylan’s eyes narrowed. “Do I—we’ve met, haven’t we?”

“I’m sorry. I’m horrible at manners sometimes.” Chase offered his hand. “I’m Chase. We met at the Riley party.” He dropped his voice to a whisper. “I’m Mind Bender.”

“Oh!” Dylan’s eyes widened. “I hadn’t recognized you…but I bet that was the point.” His cheeks burned bright red and the color spread down his neck. “Can I say that was a good show, or will I get you into trouble?”

“Won’t get me into trouble. I appreciate the kind words.” Chase nodded to the cart. “I needed to get a few things. Care to walk with me, or are you nearly done?”

“I’m trying to get my shopping done while Nathan’s at swim camp.” Dylan gripped the cart. “The kid is a fish.”

“He’s your only child?” Chase pulled up beside Dylan and walked the rest of the way down the frozen food aisle.

“Just one. My partner and I couldn’t decide on another one.” Dylan’s blush deepened. “It’s a long story.”

“But I bet it’s a good one.” Chase missed being able to converse with other adults. The people at the store were okay, but they weren’t Dylan. The spark from the party hadn’t been in his imagination. He and Dylan seemed to be able to talk quite well.

“The story has its good parts, but there are bad parts, too.” Dylan stopped. “How much more do you have to buy?”

“Truth be told, I’m done.” Chase grinned. “I didn’t need much.”

“If you’re done, do you want to grab a cup of coffee? The little shop allows carts. I’ve only got a few more things to get.” Dylan flexed his fingers on the cart handle. The indentation of a wedding ring was evident, but not deep. Divorced? Split up? Chase wanted to know and yet, he didn’t want to ask.

“I’d like that,” Chase said. “I’ll pay for my things while you finish, then meet you at the coffee shop in, what, ten minutes?”

“Sounds good.”

Paying for his items didn’t take the entire ten minutes. For once, the lines at the store moved quickly. Chase tucked his change into his wallet. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d gotten through the line in less than fifteen minutes. He pushed the cart to the coffee shop. Most of the tables were empty and one of the booths was free. He pushed the cart behind the booth and plopped onto the wooden seat.

His skin prickled. Being around Dylan heightened his senses. What was it about the dad that kept him on the edge? He eased his phone from his pocket and switched the ringer to silent. If anyone needed him that bad, they could wait. As he sat there, the salt shaker began to levitate. Oh fuck. He grabbed the glass container and held it to the table top. No, no, no. His powers weren’t allowed to go haywire. They weren’t.

Mix two guys with simmering desire and add the new drink, Shimmer. What could go wrong?

Ronan’s been more than a little in love with Jaxon since they met four years ago. He wants a romantic relationship with his best friend, but they’re opposites. Jaxon’s bookish, quiet and observational, but Ronan’s the epitome of attention-seeking. Besides, Jaxon’s just out of a relationship. Would he want to start another love match, but this time with Ronan?

Jaxon knows how he feels about Ronan. He’d like to strip him down and kiss every tattooed and pierced inch of him. The thing is, he’s worried he’ll screw up the friendship if the romance fails.

The bar is closed for the night and there’s two shots of Shimmer left. So Shimmer creates a different sensation for each drinker. So it can cause unexpected results. It can’t make two guys on the verge of love fall for each other…can it?

EXCERPT: ©Megan Slayer, 2017, All Rights Reserved

“So there’s not much Shimmer left?”

“Like two shots at most.” He washed the rest of the glasses. “Did you want to try it?”

“Might as well. We’re supposed to push it. We should know what it tastes like and what it can do.” Ronan turned two of the ice-ball glasses over. “Fill ’er up. One for you and one for me. What do you

want to mix it with? I can’t remember half of the combinations.”

“What do you want to add? It’s your drink and your experience.” His hands shook. What the hell? He wasn’t a big drinker. Beer made him sick and the fruity drinks had too much sugar. For a guy who worked at a bar, he wasn’t much of an alcohol connoisseur.

“I’m going to mix mine with cola.” It worked with rum. Why not Shimmer?

“Hmm…I think…” Ronan picked up the soda hose. “Lemon-lime.” He poured the clear soda into one glass, then added cola to Jaxon’s. “You add the Shimmer.”

“Sure.” He poured the liquor into the glasses. “Ready?” He picked up his. “Should we toast?”

“Why not?” Ronan grinned. He licked his lips and screwed his face up as he seemed to consider what to say. “How about…to our health, friendship, and great sex. Bottoms up.”

Jaxon downed the drink and ignored the way Ronan’s words made him feel. Great sex. With him? He wasn’t sure. The booze burned on the way down. Shit. He should’ve asked someone how Shimmer and

cola made them react.

“Wow.” Ronan smacked his lips. “That’s awesome. It tingles.”

“The carbonation does that.” He finished his drink and turned away from Ronan. His brain buzzed—or was that the liquor? He wasn’t sure. Holy hell. Blood thrummed through his body. He shifted his hips. His cock throbbed. Was that the tightness of his jeans or the booze? Shimmer couldn’t be affecting him. Nah. He had control of himself.

“Hey, Jax?” Ronan gripped Jaxon’s shoulder. “Is this stuff supposed to make you hot?”

“Huh?” He turned around. “Like how? Is your tongue burning?”

“Kind of.” Ronan poured some more lemon-lime soda, then downed it. “Yeah, this isn’t making me hot.” He frowned. “Did anyone else order Shimmer the way I did?”

“I don’t know. Even if I remembered how it was ordered, I didn’t ask anyone.” Jaxon dropped his glass into the soapy water.

“Jaxon?”

He stared at his friend. “I’m the only other person in the bar. What?”

Ronan’s eyes widened. “I like you and want to fuck you.”

“Now, have you been good this year?”

“I’ve done the best with what I’ve got,” Jagger answered. He wasn’t kidding. He liked sex. He liked to mingle. There might have been an occasion or two where he’d had a few too many and gone home with a guy only to have the relationship last as long as the blow job, but who was honestly a total angel?

“I see. I’ll have to keep my eye on you.” Santa shifted in his seat. “What would you like for Christmas?”

“An angel.”

“A what? A porcelain one?”

“No, no. Like the old song. An angel sent to me.” He’d loved that Shelly Fabares song so much. So the tune was hokey and the words were dated…he didn’t care.

“Ah. What do you want her to look like?” Santa asked.

Oh boy. Jagger fought the urge to roll his eyes. “I’d like him to be at least six feet tall. Brown hair. Shaggy hair, like just rolled out of bed shaggy. Blue eyes. Nice smile. Not a ton of chest hair. Great personality. Oh, and I want him to be the boyfriend type.” That about summed up what he’d wanted.

“You’re thorough.” Santa rubbed his chin. “That’s a tall order, pardon the pun.”

“I know. I figure you’re my last hope. I’ve tried meeting guys on my own. Tried the dating scene, the website thing, and the set up by friends thing. None of it has worked. If you can’t, then I’m hopeless, and December will forever suck.”

“Aren’t you positive?” Santa paused. His dark eyes glittered. “Does his name have to be Johnny?”

“Nope.”

“If you have this man come to you, you’ll enjoy the holiday?” Santa asked.

“I will.” Granted, he wanted the man to stick around and be more than short term, but love wasn’t going to happen overnight.

“Well, I’ll see what can be done. You’re cutting it mighty close.”

“Don’t I know it.”

“It’s Valentine’s Day. What’s on your docket?”

“I’m not sure. Aydin said something about a plan and celebration. I’m the lousy boyfriend this time. I hadn’t gotten him anything and was going to on the way home.” The tips of his ears burned. “I was so worried about the review, I kind of forgot it was Valentine’s Day.”

“You forgot?” she blurted.

“I did.” He walked beside her. “I was going to get him flowers.”

“Flowers?” She stopped in her tracks. “Are you serious?”

“He likes them.”

“Not chocolates?”

“He doesn’t like them. I thought he did, but he just ate the ones I got him for Christmas because he didn’t want them to go to waste.” When she started walking again, he fell into step beside her. “I know what he likes—now.”

“Flowers, eh?” She laughed. “And what else? Some hey-hey?” She elbowed him. “Right?”

He wasn’t about to tell her the other gift would be a blow job.

“Well, good.” She stopped at the classroom door. “I hope you have a good night.” She poked her head into the classroom. “Bye, Aydin. Have a wicked hot night.”

“That’s the plan.” Aydin left his spot on the desk and picked up the portfolio. “Ready?”

Heat slid through Brandon’s body. He couldn’t wait to get home. He’d strip Aydin down and taste every inch of him. “Yeah.”

“Good. Let’s go. I drove, so we can blow this popsicle stand.” Aydin carried the case out of the room. “Goodnight, Georgie. Do you need us to walk you out?”

“Nah, I’m meeting my friend Durand upstairs.” She waved. “Night! Do all the things I can’t do but want to watch.”

“We will,” Aydin called.

Brandon stood rooted to the spot for a second. Do all the things I can’t do but want to watch…holy shit. And Aydin hadn’t batted an eye. Damn. Excitement radiated through Brandon. He had the guy, the grade, and good friends. Now, he’d have a hot Valentine’s Day. Fucking sweet, indeed.

“Bitter isn’t a good color on you.”

Paul tapped the remote, silencing the television. He could’ve sworn he heard someone besides the people on the screen talking. The voice sounded like Tristan, but that was impossible. Tristan Evans had died two years ago.

“Come on, Paul. Hasn’t it been long enough?”

Damn it. That had to be Tristan’s voice, but from where? He glanced around the room. With the exception of the cat, he was alone. He’d locked the front and back doors and checked the house to ensure everything was safe. Right after Tristan had died, he could’ve sworn he’d heard Tristan talking to him. The shrink dismissed the voice as being a figment of Paul’s imagination and longing. Paranoia, the shrink called it. Paul only lasted the rest of the session before finding a new psychiatrist.

Hearing Tristan had to be a figment of Paul’s imagination—again.

“If you won’t properly speak to me, I’ll stop coming to you.”

Paul squeezed his eyes shut. In his mind he saw Tristan leaning against the bedroom doorframe. He wore his favorite ratty, body –hugging blue jeans, no socks or shoes and the old Flashes shirt he loved. The muscles in his arms bulged and his dark hair flopped over his forehead. His blue eyes blazed as he tipped his head to the side. Even as a memory, he sent warm shivers through Paul’s system.

“You’ve got to stop hating the holiday we both loved. Hate won’t bring me back.” Tristan strode towards him and hooks his thumbs in his front pockets. “Cheer up. Please?”

Tears slipped down Paul’s cheeks. The hurt he’d bottled up for the better part of the last two years came back in a rush. “I know I should, but I can’t. I lost you and seeing all of the Halloween decorations makes that loss so fresh and raw. I can’t do it. I love you, but I can’t keep ripping myself open.”

“Then keep loving me.”

Paul wiped his face and opened his eyes. He needed to get his shit together. Talking to a figment of his imagination wasn’t going to help his situation. Still, the words poured out of him. “How? How do I forget the man I love?”

Tristan sat opposite him on the bed. “You keep my memory alive, thus keeping me alive.”

Paul blinked. He’d opened his eyes. There was no way Tristan could be on the bed with him. No way. He’d buried his lover. “You’re a ghost. Ghosts don’t exist. What the fuck is going on?” He scrambled off the mattress and landed on the floor with a thud. One of the pillows flopped over onto him and he shoved it away. His mind had to be playing tricks on him. “No. Ghost do not exist.”

“Technically I’m not a ghost, but you’d be surprised.” Tristan—or what sure as hell lookedlike Tristan—sighed and stood. He turned his back on Paul. “It all comes down to rules and you know how much I hate rules.” He glanced over his shoulder and smiled. “I found a way around the rules.”

Paul rounded the bed and placed himself between Tristan’s ghost and the cat. No one hurt Milo—not even a crazy ghost who claimed to be Paul’s ex-boyfriend. “I don’t know who you are or why you’re doing this, but the joke is over. You had your fun and old Paul looks like a moron. You won, now get the hell out of my house.”

“Aww, honey, I’m not trying to dupe you.” The man strolled across the room to the bed. “Paul, I’m here.”

Can these two opposites find the right rhythm?

Jon Kagan likes his life. He’s carefree unless he’s in the recording studio with his trumpet. Then he’s serious as hell. He plays the field like he does the notes on each track, but the single life isn’t fun any longer. He wants a lover and partner. But how can he find the man of his dreams when the only people he spends time with are the same musicians night after night? He’s convinced he won’t–until he meets Benny. Then all bets are off.

Benny Walters burns the midnight oil, too, but not in the music business. He’d rather work on houses than play tunes. Putting in a good sweat over a flooring job or painting a room makes him happy–almost as much as watching the hot guy who jogs across the neighborhood in the middle of the day. When he finally talks to Jon, sparks fly. He’d love to get to know Jon better, but confidence isn’t his strong point. Will he be able to get beyond his past and find the future he deserves?

Love happens in the strangest places, especially when it hits all the right notes.

“Are you painting the outside of the house? You mentioned something about gray.” Jon didn’t want to end the conversation. He’d grown fond of Benny, even after a few minutes of chatting.

“Oh, no. My friend is having new siding put on, but I’m not doing it. No, I posed the question in front of your friend there, because you looked like you’d rather eat scorpions than talk to him.”

He laughed again and rocked on his feet. He liked the way Benny talked. “I’m glad you did.” And even gladder he got the chance to meet Benny.

“I should get back to the shingles. It’s hot and not all that sexy, but it pays the bills.”

“I’m sure it does.” Jon glanced over at the house, then met Benny’s gaze. “If I’m ever in the mood to redo my house, can I call you?” Christ, his hands shook. He hadn’t been this nervous in ages. Because of Benny?

“Sure. I don’t have business cards or anything, but I’m licensed and bonded.”

“I didn’t doubt it.” He slid his phone from the holder around his forearm. “Give me your number and I’ll add you.”

“555-6620.”

“Ask for Benny?” Jon smiled. He could’ve sworn the afternoon heat increased a few degrees each time he looked into Benny’s eyes.

“It’s my personal number. No assistants or anything. I’m not that big.” He blushed. “So you’ll have to talk to me.”

“There’s nothing wrong with that.” He inputted the info, then tucked the phone back into the holder. “I’ll let you shingle. It was nice to meet you. Feel free to rescue me again.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” Benny grinned and hefted a pack of shingles onto his shoulder. He climbed the ladder up to the porch roof and flexed as he put the shingles down.

Jon whimpered. Benny could really haul. “Do you run?”

Benny stepped to the edge of the roof and rested his hands on his hips. “What?”

“Do you run? Exercise?”

“I lift weights. Why?”

“I thought maybe you’d like to go for a run with me sometime.” Holy fuck, he’d just kind of asked Benny out. Hell yeah.

“You always run in the afternoon. I’m a morning guy.”

“Oh.” Jon paused. Benny was supposed to agree to join him. That’s what the other guys did… Well, shit. Jon twiddled with his headphones. “Wait, how’d you know about my run times?”

“You go past here nearly every day and have since the first of June. You’re hard to miss.”

“Is that a good thing?” Or bad? He hoped for the former.

“I’m just observant.”

And noncommittal with his answers. Damn it. “Okay, well, I’ll see you around. Maybe tomorrow when I run past here.”

“Same time, same channel,” Benny said. He waved and returned to the shingles.

What an odd guy, but handsome as hell and intriguing, too.

Jon headed home, but his thoughts never left Benny. The man knew the right moment to step in, which was kind of nice, and not Jon’s regular type. He liked pretty boys. Musicians or vocalists. He snorted and stopped in his driveway. He had no idea if Benny was even gay, much less if he was interested. The answer to his run question had been vague. Probably because Benny wasn’t homosexual.

He strode up the drive to the front porch and into his house, and kicked off his running shoes. He downed a bottle of water in what seemed like a single gulp. Trust him to find the one guy who wasn’t interested, and find him attractive.

He had to be out of his mind, but he wanted to go back. Wanted to talk to Benny and get to know him better.

He did have Benny’s number. What could he break in order to get the handsome home remodeler to come over?

“Forty-six hours and counting until we’re legal.” Peter Barnes eased up behind his fiancé, Kenley Kissinger and nibbled on Kenley’s earlobe. “Forty-six hours until we’re set.”

“We’re already set. We live together. How is that not set?” Kenley chuckled and resumed washing the dishes. He placed a soapy plate under the faucet and rinsed. “The wedding just means we’re official. Speaking of official, you never did say how we were handling the name situation. I’m fine with a hyphen.”

“I forgot about it. A hyphen works for me.” He let go of Kenley and picked up the towel. He liked the domesticity he and Kenley had settled into. He had a place he belonged and someone who loved Peter—not the male model part of his persona. He dried one of the dinner plates and glanced around the kitchen. When he’d moved in with Kenley, the house resembled Kenley’s tightly wound personality. The man liked his organization and hated clutter. Peter loved clutter. He loved leaving his clothes all over the floor and his styling products around the bathroom sink. They were opposites in most every way, but they seemed to make things work, and he loved it.

“Did you finalize the guest list?” Kenley turned off the water and wiped his hands on a towel. “Your friend, Roscoe, told me over the phone that he was doing the place cards. Peter, I thought we’d decided on a small wedding.”

“We did.” He’d forgotten about talking to Roscoe. The wedding to Kenley was in less than two days. He couldn’t seem to keep his head on straight, let alone remember who he’d delegated to help with the planning. Getting married on Valentine’s Day had been a stroke of genius on his part and he wanted to get the ceremony over with. He was ready to be officially married to Kenley.
