“Some people are great on paper but crap in real life. That’s what Kevin and I were…are.” She stared toward the ground. “Getting engaged to him was my biggest mistake. He’s a parent and I’m a teacher. Not a good mix. I thought we’d be able to overlook it. He couldn’t. I ended up giving ninety percent and he called his ten in. Sad.”

Adam wanted to pry. He wanted to know everything about the relationship and the break-up so that in case he and Melissa actually tried dating, he’d know what not to do. Instead of speaking, he stayed quiet and listened to the sound of their breathing.

“Look, the guy embarrassed the hell out of me and then acted like he was the jilted party, yet I took him back. No more. I don’t mind joshing among friends, but public embarrassment is not cool.” She finally looked up at him. Her eyes shimmered and the blush across her cheeks swept down her neck. “Gee, this is awkward. All this was supposed to make you feel better. I wasn’t supposed to ramble on.”

Adam reached out, hesitant to touch her. She was his friend and sounded like she needed consoling. What the hell. He snagged her in a hug and stroked her hair. “You helped more than you realize.” He stifled a chuckle. “Chasing Tessa was a pipe dream and I’ve been turning the situation over in my mind. I knew she wasn’t interested, but the game was too much fun to stop. She was my mystery girl—kind of.” He loved the way she felt in his embrace, so small and curvy. The more he talked about Tessa, the more he realized he wanted Melissa. “But now I’m confident it’s time to move on. I’m meant for something else besides chasing.”

Melissa rested her head on his shoulder and didn’t pull away from him. “Mystery isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, but then again, neither is reality.”

This time he did chuckle. “I got a life lesson out of the experience.” Besides, holding Melissa cemented to him the fact that there was way more to life than chasing a mystery.

“What was the lesson? Don’t push people?” She tipped her head and stared up at him.

“Know your limits.” Adam rubbed her back. God knew the longer she lingered in his arms, the more likely he was to embarrass himself, but he didn’t care. He liked the way she cradled against him. “I’m guessing you could use that lesson, too? If Kevin isn’t working out, then don’t be afraid to cut him loose for good. You’ll feel better.” So would he. Melissa deserved better than Kevin, the pompous jerk.

“You’re right.” She still didn’t pull away. “We should really go back in.”

“Probably.” He wanted to kiss her. Was that pushing things too far?

“We should do this after school,” Melissa murmured.

He paused. Do what? Kiss? Hell, yeah, he wanted to kiss her. But he wasn’t sure if she was truly done with her boyfriend. She stared at him and he fought the urge to squirm. She wanted an answer. Adam nodded. “I’m game.” For running and so much more. The electricity between him and Melissa couldn’t be a fluke.

“I’ll hold you to that.” She wriggled from his grasp. A new sparkle lit in her eyes and she smiled again. Melissa poked him hard in the chest. “Catch me if you can.” She spun on her heel and sprinted away from him.

“You bet.” He started after her, his spirit renewed. “You certainly bet.”

His perfect match is in the last place he expects—across the courtyard.

Graig Case wants to teach history and coach baseball. Plain and simple. But nothing in his life has been easy. He’s also got a secret. He loves to watch the sexy woman across the courtyard dance. He’d love for his fantasy girl to be his best friend, but fantasy and reality don’t always mix.

Tessa Martin has given up on love. She’s played second fiddle most of her life. Men like hanging out with her. Being one of the guys doesn’t keep her warm at night. Still, she indulges in her one treat—dancing for Graig. No emotions involved means no one gets hurt.

Except when they end up working in the same school in the same hallway…then all bets are off.

“The first day is always the hardest,” Graig Case said to himself. He wasn’t sure how else to psyche himself up. He walked out of the main office of the high school. He stopped in front of the auditorium and drank in the view from the top of the marble steps. After the craziness of the last few months—the moving, the uncertainty of his job situation and playing a hunch with his career…he had a job. He still hadn’t wrapped his mind around having earned the final interview and being offered the position. He wasn’t a substitute any longer. Now, he was the real deal.

He stared at the keys in his hand. This year he’d been given an honest-to-God classroom, not a portion of the library. He’d been assigned to the art hallway. Sure, that was probably the only open room and not too big, but who cared? The classroom was his!

He leaned on the wall. A row of staff photos decorated the space above the bank of doors leading to the front of the school building. My colleagues. They’d been nice to him during the previous year, but half of them hadn’t expected him to return. The substitutes tended to be there for the school year and moved on or burned out by the next.

Graig chuckled. He wasn’t out or giving up, since he had a classroom right down the hallway from Tessa Martin. Just thinking about her warmed him all over. He’d flirted with her the year before and had almost asked her out twice, but had lost his nerve. They were friends and he’d told himself not to screw things up with her. She’d been nice to him and had given him the tipoff when her apartment complex had a few units open. Without her, he wouldn’t have his current place—right across the courtyard from her. During the summer, he’d run into her a few times in the parking lot. Each time they were together, she made him think twice about her. If he hadn’t gotten into a relationship with his last girlfriend, Lila, he would have made a play for Tessa. But he’d chosen Lila.

He snorted. Lila. She’d been a mistake from the start. She refused to support his career and hadn’t wanted him to take the substitute teaching job. When he’d signed the lease for the apartment, Lila had left him. According to her, he was wasting time at the high school and making a fool of himself by getting a place to live right there in town. She claimed he was meant for bigger and better things. He wasn’t so sure.

Not that Lila’s opinion mattered all that much. She’d broken things off with him. She’d acted almost sincere when she’d told him to go to hell after he revealed he’d been offered the contract to work at the high school. She’d dumped him on the spot.

He focused on someone better—Tessa. Who was he kidding? Running into her and those chance conversations weren’t enough, but he’d never quite gotten her out of his system. When he’d seen her and spoken to her, she’d blush, smile and hurry away before he could get much conversation going. He should’ve stood his ground and asked her out for coffee. But he hadn’t. He’d given her space.

Tessa’s image grinned from her spot on the wall. In the photo, she’d pulled her dark hair away from her face and the cowl-neck sweater bunched up beneath her chin. It wasn’t the best photo, even if she did look happy. He shouldn’t stare. It wasn’t polite, but like last year, he was still drawn to her. She had such a pretty face, bright smile and infectious laugh. Being around her made him happy and put him at ease. But she always hid herself under those baggy sweaters and bulky aprons. Her clothing choices hadn’t flattered her figure.

Part of him wanted to tell her how he felt—that she was a diamond in the rough and had so much sparkle within her. But his tendency to speak his mind and say the wrong things would put her off. Not that he blamed her.

Maybe she needed some encouragement…just like he did. She seemed so shy, but once he’d gotten to know her, she’d gained a little confidence. Could he help her find more? He doubted he’d be the catalyst, but he had an entire school year down the hall from her.

EXCERPT:

She sighed. As with everything else in her life, she’d adapt to the changes. So many things had happened during her fifteen years at Valley Elementary. She’d turned thirty what seemed like eons ago. She’d fallen in love with a good man, met his unique family, married that same man, the only one she’d ever loved, and watched him walk away. When she’d been knocked down, she had picked herself up. After the split, she’d managed to stay friends with her ex. Her friend Molly had called her a saint for being so nice to Corey. Molly claimed Corey didn’t deserve pity or a second chance. Katie disagreed, but that probably was why she still hadn’t moved on.

Oh, well. She’d adapted to being single again. Sometimes she wondered why she held on to the hope that there could be a second go-round with Corey. He had the way, but not the will and she couldn’t keep meeting him at the ninety percent mark.

She plunked her bag down on the desk. A shiver ran the length of her spine. From the air-conditioning system? She checked the thermostat. Whoever had been in the room last left the dial on the lowest setting. She rubbed her arms. Time to bring the temp up a bit. She changed the temperature to seventy-eight, then returned to rearranging her room. She nudged one of the tables with her hip. Holy crap. The tables were heavier than they looked. She wished Corey would show up to throw his muscle around. She picked up her phone and sent Corey a text.

EXCERPT:

“Just don’t. I’m not that kind of girl you sleep with once and throw away.” If he learned her secrets, he’d either run his mouth or run away. “The rumors are right—I’m going to be the last teacher to get married because the right guy isn’t out there.”

“I disagree. I’d like to see you, Ally. Maybe we could dance and have a few drinks then get to know each other better.” He stepped up close to her again. “I won’t haunt you, if that’s what you’re worried about.” He paused. “See? I did watch the movie. I know what the Phantom does. I might whisk you away to my basement dungeon and have my way with you, but you have to give me the chance first.”

“Smart ass.” She debated wriggling free of him, but her body refused to cooperate with her brain’s request.

“I might bite—or, better yet, let you bite me.” He laughed. “I’m easy.”

Oh boy. She hesitated. He was the one she wanted. She’d fantasized about him and to actually be in his arms… She’d had her dream come true and her nightmare exposed. “Okay, but don’t do this so you can dodge someone.”

“I’m not that kind of guy. You’re my focus.” Jordy brushed his thumb across her bottom lip. “When I’m with someone, that’s it.”

“Uh-huh.” She allowed him to tug her from the main hall out to the foyer, then the uncharacteristically cool June night.

Jordy held her to his chest, then spun her around so her ass nestled in the vee of his crotch. He rubbed against her. He slid his hands from her hips to her belly and kept her tight to his body. “I wanted to dance, but out here because it’s chilly.” He dragged his lips along the back of her neck. “You’re one hot vampire.” He nibbled on her skin. “Maybe you should bite me.”

She turned around to face him. God, the man was handsome and strong. His embrace warmed her to the core. She draped her arms about his neck. She had him where she wanted him. “What would you do if I asked if we could leave?”

“I’d think you were ditching me.” Jordy kept her close. “Why?”

If she wanted a chance with him, she’d have to go for it herself. “Do you like me?”

“Ally?” He stared at her. After a second, he loosened his embrace. “Do I like you? You’re my sister’s friend.”

“Ah.” So that was the score—she was locked in the friend zone. She wriggled free and gathered her composure. “I understand. Thank you.” She started away from him. Damn it. She refused to let him see her crack. She knew she was out of his league.

“Ally.” Jordy kept up with her. “I didn’t—I’m confused. Talk to me.” He stepped in front of her, forcing her to stop.

Fuck it. Instead of explaining, she mashed her mouth on his. She hooked her fingers into his belt loops. The bulge in his pants rubbed against her again. Touching him stoked the fire deep within her. Ignoring him hadn’t done any good in getting him out of her system. He still managed to creep into her thoughts. Kissing him only reinforced her desire for him and confused her more. She should be pushing him away, not pulling him closer. If she’d only admit she wanted him, this would be a lot easier. Too bad she excelled in taking the pockmarked, potholed road.

Allyson Benson has been in love with Jordy Murphy since she started teaching at the same elementary building. She wants the tall, blond gym teacher to notice her and, when he runs into her at a party, she summons her courage to ask him to be friends with benefits. Shouldn’t be difficult—lots of sex, but no entanglements and certainly not love…until love enters the equation.

Jordy Murphy doesn’t do relationships. He’s happy being free, but there’s one woman who has been on his radar—Ally. He wants to get her out of her boring clothes and kindergarten classroom for some serious one-on-one time. He’s all for the sex-only situation she proposes until he’s struck with a realization—what if this perpetual free spirit has met his match? Allyson could be the one. Can the commitment-phobe really accept the love he’s wanted all along?

Written Together

What if the woman he needs is the one he thought was out of his league?

Adam Pallas knows what he wants out of life—to teach history, to be happy and to have a hot woman by his side. He’s got one out of the three. He should be happy, but he’s not. There’s one woman who grabs his attention every time. The catch? She’s very much out of his league. Can being himself actually snag him the woman of his dreams?

Melissa Murphy isn’t looking for love, but every time she sees Adam her plans go sideways. The English teacher knows there’s a confident, hot man hiding behind the slightly nerdy history buff façade. But her past and the things she wants between the sheets tend to scare men off. She believes the odds may be stacked against them. Could it be their lives are perfectly written together after all?

Together Again

Sometimes the second time around is the right time for things to click.

Corey Murphy never intended to let his wife, Katie, become his ex-wife. But for the Murphys, convention and commitment are foreign concepts. Once he lost Katie, he decided to get his life in order. Now he’s healthy, happy with his job teaching physical education and ready to get his relationship back on track. He’s got to hope Katie’s still willing to give them a chance.

Katie Murphy loved being married. She loved the companionship, the connection…and the hot nights. Being with Corey surpassed even her wildest fantasies. But her ex-husband wasn’t big on commitment. She knows he’s got ghosts in his past, but is she willing to help him look to the future—their future?

The Oddest Thing I’ve Ever Researched ~ @MeganSlayer #research #toys #bdsm

dancingtogether_promopatch_outnow.jpg

What’s the strangest thing I’ve ever researched for a book? What book is this thing featured in and what were my methods?

I’d like to think the things I’m looking up aren’t strange. I’ve had a few that made my stomach churn (and gave me nightmares), but those books aren’t written yet.

So the oddest thing I’ve ever researched for a book… Let’s see… When I wrote the Love Lessons series, I had to research BDSM. Now that’s not odd. I’ve researched BDSM lots of times and participated in plenty. Like I said, not odd. But I’m not into piercing. Don’t ask why. Maybe it’s because I’m not wild about needles. Anyway, each story in the Love Lessons series involves a pairing and their use of bondage—role play, fetish, spanking, voyeurism, toys… you name it.

So the oddest thing I’ve researched had to be the nipple chains and chain bras my character in Dancing Together wore. She wanted to impress her boyfriend and needed something really out there (Or at least out there to her). So since she had her nipples pierced, she wanted a bra or chain for them. Once he saw the chain, he wanted one that connected her collar to her nipples and below.

Where did I go to research such things? The internet of course. But also I talked to friends who have a tattoo salon. I asked them about piercing such things and wearing the jewelry. One thing I wanted to know was how to wear clips with nipple piercings. I mean, that’s a lot of tugging and pinching. But they showed me how and it looked darn hot. I visited Etsy for pretty versions of the chains, but also Extreme Restraints, FetLife and more.

Is that a strange search item? No. Okay, it’s not to me. To some, it’s strange. I don’t mind. I got my information for Dancing Together and the characters were even better because of it.

Which book is this featured in? Why Dancing Together!
