Anders held the phone on his lap. Feed Galen. He’d never offered himself up to Galen. Even in their lowest times… Galen offered his vein plenty of times, but Anders didn’t reciprocate. Why? He’d been scared. What if they were supposed to be together and he didn’t feel the same way for Galen? He’d be giving blood to a man he didn’t love. But was that the truth? Now that someone had done something horrible to Galen, the feelings he’d kept down for so long welled to the surface. Love was possible, but he loved Bethany and Johnson, too. He cared about them all even more because he saw life could be so precious. But who did he want?

He shifted his position on the arm of the couch and watched Galen. Some supers were real assholes. Only a dick would drain someone, but only a dick would refuse his best friend too. He nudged Galen’s foot. The vampire still didn’t move.

He scooted off the couch and knelt beside Galen. “Hey.” He patted Galen’s face. “Gale. Hon.” He swatted Galen’s unbitten thigh, but the vampire didn’t move. “Stop dicking with me. If this is a joke, I’m leaving your ass for a younger, prettier model.” More panic set in. “Galen, I’m going to fuck you.”

“Stop shouting,” Galen mumbled. “You can’t leave me. I paid the rent this month.” The muscle in his jaw tensed. “You won’t fuck me, so don’t tease.”

He’d gotten an answer and snark from Galen. The man wasn’t completely dead. He held Galen’s hand and rested his forehead on Galen’s fingers. “I called Vita. She’ll be here soon. Until then, you need to eat.” He bared his fangs and ripped into his own wrist. “Come on. Take mine.” He rubbed his forearm against Galen’s mouth. “Take it.”

“No.” Galen didn’t open his eyes, but he did shake his head. “Whatever this is—it’s bad. I don’t want you to get it.”

“What?” He smeared his blood onto Galen’s lips. “The poison or whatever it is probably isn’t all of the way through your system.” Well, he hoped not.

“I’m dying.” Galen licked his mouth and moaned.

“Hon, you’re a vampire.” He dribbled more blood onto Galen’s lips. “You already died. You can’t do it again.” Technically, he could die a final death and would end up in a pile of ash, but Anders refused to let that happen. “Stop joking.”

“I’m not.” Galen managed to open his eyes. Instead of the dark luster and shimmer, the sparkle in his brown eyes dulled. The middle reminded him of coffee with a little cream—not a black pupil. “I’m dying.”

I’ve tried for the most part to write what I know. I don’t know any vampires or werewolves, but hey, imagination is a good thing, right?

One of the things I’d like to think I know a lot about is home life. Being a parent, dog parent and such. I’m not saying I’m the best. Far from it. I’m pretty sure the cats believe the house is theirs and I’m simply the housekeeper/food dispenser.

But being a parent has bled into my work. My tot runs cross country, so of course, that’s shown up in my work. The cats think they should watch…everything. Yeah, it’s played into the books. My lousy attempts at cooking? You guessed it. Art teachers and teachers in general…yep. Same thing.

So as I’m writing this post, I’m doing my best pet parenting. See, the dog had glaucoma that got out of control. I had no idea this sort of thing happened. Anyway, because the glaucoma couldn’t be controlled, she had to have her eye removed. Now with people, you can tell them, don’t scratch that. The stitches won’t heal if you pick at them. Dogs don’t understand that. They need those horrible cones to keep them from digging into their various issues. My dog HATES that cone. I hate putting it on her. She’s only got one eye and now I’m putting this huge thing that bonks into everything on her head. Seems unfair. So instead of keeping the cone on her, I’ve been spending my time next to her. If I have an eye on her, she’s not picking at the stitches. It’s a pretty good plan.

And I think this event will end up in a book. I know I’m not the only pet parent who’s had a dog with an eye removed. It’s a trial and tough, but we’re getting through it. I can see a character having the same issues–except maybe with a new relationship, too. Yeah, and the town of Cedarwood seems like the best place to set this story. What do you think? Colt sipped his wine and stared at the tree. The warm light from the tiny bulbs cast a soft glow across the room. He wished the snow were falling.

“You picked out a pretty tree.” Ashley bumped shoulders with Colt. “I love it.”

“I like the one you selected too.” He draped his arm around Ashley. “It’ll be even better once we decorate it.” He paused. “Come upstairs with me.”

“You haven’t finished your wine.” Ashley gulped his. “I can’t waste it.”

Colt finished the rest of his, then placed the glass on the end table. “Now?”

“Okay.” Ashley scooped up both glasses. “You know better than to leave these out. If the dogs don’t knock them over, Wyatt will.” He carried the stemware to the kitchen, then stopped in the doorway. “Now I’m ready.”

Colt waited until he and Ashley were upstairs and the door to the bedroom closed before he spoke…just in case Wyatt wasn’t totally asleep. “I’ve wanted this all day.”

“Have you?” Ashley kissed him. “I have too.” He feathered his lips across Colt’s. “I loved the surprise. It almost makes up for missing you.”

“I know and I’m sorry.” He unbuttoned Ashley’s pants. “I wish I didn’t have to be away so much.” He pushed the denim down Ashley’s thighs. His underwear went with the tight jeans, exposing Ashley’s cock.

“But you are.” Ashley swayed with Colt and rubbed his newly freed dick against the bulge in Colt’s pants.

Colt held Ashley tightly and mashed his mouth on Ashley’s, then swallowed his moan. Ashley shoved Colt’s shirt out of the way and scraped his nails over Colt’s chest. The sting ricocheted within Colt.

“Ash,” Colt murmured.

“Yeah?”

I love Christmas. I love writing about it. Why? Because there’s magic. It’s in the air, in the way we interact with each other and I can’t get enough. I’m the nut watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel in July because I’m excited.

I celebrated by writing not one, but three holiday themed stories. Yeah, I went a little overboard. This post features my book, Christmas in Cedarwood. If you’ve read my Single Father Society books, you’ll recognize Ashley and Colt from Rainbow Over Cedarwood. The thing about this couple is, I knew I wasn’t done with them when I wrote Rainbow. They had more to say.

But the hard part about writing Christmas stories is that you don’t write them in December, unless it’s for the following Christmas season. The lag takes that long to get the book polished, edited and ready for publication. That’s not a bad thing, but it makes writing a Christmas story in July or earlier a little difficult. It’s hard to get into the spirit of the season when you’re sweating. Ha ha! But I did and I’m happy with how Colt and Ashley’s story worked out. These two guys are awesome and while their five days leading up to Christmas aren’t easy, they deal.

And did I mention there’s a bonus short story included for free? Yep. Single in Springdale, about Len, Aiden’s father, is included with Christmas in Cedarwood. I’m excited to bring this story to you.

Writing, Chaos, Order and a Whole Lot of Pens with @MeganSlayer #iamwriting #planning #posting #writing

I love my writing utensils. Love them. I’ve got a pen collection that’s probably out of control. Why? Because when I go somewhere, I want a pen to commemorate being there. Also, they look pretty. I tend to use the ink up in them, too. With my luck, once I decided to display the pens, the one with the ink left in it would explode and I’d have a mess. But that’s my luck.

But this post isn’t about just my love of pens…although based on the photos I added, you’d think it might be. Grin.

I wanted to write today about something that may seem small and silly, but it’s pretty big for me.

I’m a stress writer. Yep. I admit it. I am. I tend to know what I want to write and have deadlines, but for whatever reason, I seem to wait until I’m down to the wire before I get things done. That doesn’t mean I’m sitting around doing nothing. No…I’m usually finishing up whatever it was I put off before this project.

It’s not a good thing to do, stress writing. I tend to create these crazy schedules for myself, then stress when I don’t feel like I’m meeting my own deadlines. It’s worse during National Novel Writing Month (NaNo). I usually have a project to finish BEFORE I can start the NaNo one and then I try to get both done y the end of November (that’s the month NaNo takes place in).

Right now, I’m currently trying to wrap up a short for Changeling involving Christmas Magic. I won’t get into the gritty nitty, but it’s short and it’s HAWT. Before that, I finished another Christmas tale for another publisher. Because I love Christmas? Because the stories were begging to be written. Oh, and I’ve got another short planned for once the Changeling book is done. Have I lost my mind? Sometimes it feels like it.

I enjoy Christmas, don’t get me wrong. I love the joy, the togetherness and the fun of the holiday. But it’s July. It’s not entirely hard to think about snow (it’s been well into the 90s for temps here of late),  but I’m not really in the mindset to write Christmas. I won’t lie. When it’s Christmas time, then I’ve got all sorts of ideas for stories. It just happens to be too late or too early to turn them in (depending on who you ask). But the stories I just finished and am working on demanded to be written.

I don’t have big spreadsheets of what needs to be written and when. I might have a schedule that’s in my trusty notebook next to my laptop, but that’s got maybe a week or two out scheduling wise. I let the muse talk and pants my way through most of my stories. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t just write whatever pops into my head from the muse. That’s what ends up in the notebook where I can tweak it first. But it might be May and I’ll have the characters for a Christmas story show up. Or it might be Halloween and I want to write Valentines stories. Although, a mash-up of a Valentine Halloween might be fun.

So while I’m sure I rambled through this post, this is a clue into my writing world. There’s some order and some chaos, but it’s all mine and I own it. I might as well. 🙂

 

 

Vampires, Tigers and White Collar? with @MeganSlayer #PNR #vampires #shifters #paranormal

I bet you’re wondering where I got the wacky title for this post. Glad you’re wondering. I’m a visual writer. I’m a visual learner, too. What I mean is, I need visual stimulation when I write. In layman’s terms, I need a hot guy as inspiration for my stories. The guy doesn’t always have to be the same guy. Trust me, the guy changes a lot. From story to story, usually.

For example, when I started the Battle Scarred series, I binge watched the television show, White Collar. Ever heard of it? There’s a guy who is a forger and a thief who ends up working with and for the Feds. From an art perspective, I loved it. I mean, art and a hot guy? I’m in. What really hooked me was the intelligent writing. Oh and Matt Bomer was danged cute. I loved how he pulled off the suits and the fedoras with ease. The more I watched him, the more I could see him—and those blue eyes—as a vampire. But not just any vampire. One that died in the 1940’s and was all about the look. That’s where Kynan, from You Have Me, was born. Kynan’s a dominant man—in and out of the bedroom. He can’t just be there. He’s got to be in charge. That’s where Matt Bomer fit the bill. He can stare at you with those eyes and you’re paralyzed. Okay, maybe I’d be the one who is paralyzed—and drooling—but who’s counting? See? He was just the visual inspiration I needed.

In You Own Me, Kynan’s best friend who also happens to be a tiger shifter, has his turn to tell his story. He’s nothing like Kynan. Where Kynan’s tall, dark and sophisticated, Creighton, my tiger shifter, is bulky, tall and foreboding. Sound like anyone you’ve ever seen? I could say he was inspired by the Rock, but that’s not entirely true. Creighton’s a blond. To a degree, he’s like Jake Gyllenhaal from Prince of Persia, but he’s bigger and blonder. So where exactly did I get the idea for Creighton? Thor. I love my Marvel movies. Love ‘em. I’ve got all but the Hulk on my computer in digital form. When I write, I listen to those movies. So yeah, quite a bit of Thor seeped into Creighton. Hey, he’s a hot guy and I was inspired. Grin. Plus, Creighton’s the kind of guy who fills a room and looks menacing. Chris Hemsworth, aka Thor, does that well. I can never quite tell what he’s thinking, even when he smiles and it’s a little unnerving. But that’s Creighton, too. Big, scary, but a teddy bear in the right circumstances.

“Hi.” Matt stood before him, clad in the tightest white shirt and baggy jeans. He folded his arms. The fabric strained and displayed both his muscles and his ink. “Thought I’d find you here.”

“Me?” Aiden asked. “I’m not anyone special.”

“You’re a doctor.” Matt crossed the expanse and threaded his arms around Aiden. “I’ve wanted to kiss you since I met you.” He mashed his mouth down on Aiden’s, taking control immediately.

Aiden wanted to protest. He wanted to talk more and get to know Matt, but the kiss… He ground his crotch against Matt’s and caressed Matt’s back. He’d seen every inch of him when Matt had been in the ER, but having the man in his embrace kicked his senses into overdrive.

Matt leaned back long enough to rest his forehead on Aiden’s and groan. “Like that?”

He nodded. Any words were lost the moment he looked into Matt’s blue eyes. He wanted more from Matt—not just a kiss or a touch, but sex.

Doctor, Doctor and Opposites Attracting! Writing Doc Cedarwood with @MeganSlayer #mmromance #mm

I like to play with opposites and second chances in my books. I never set out to write a specific opposites attract tale or decide from the beginning that I’m going to give the characters each a second chance. The stories tend to come out that way.

Doc Cedarwood started out as a conversation between another author and me. I’d been to the emergency room related to a surgery I’d had shortly before (Don’t worry, I was fine, but needed to go and I’m back to tip top shape now). The doctor who cared for me while in the ER was…well, he was handsome and had a southern drawl. For what I’d gone in for, needless to say, I was embarrassed.

Anyway, I wanted to turn my embarrassment into a story. I mean, why not turn it into something good? So the ER doctor became one of the heroes in my Single Father Society series with Loose Id. But who could I pair up with Aiden, the clean, sterile doctor? I didn’t have to look long. Matt came right to the forefront. He’s a mechanic and a former addict. Yeah, he’s going to be an interesting potential partner for Aiden.  They’ve both got pasts and both deserve a second chance.
