NaNo Craziness ~ #Winning #notWinning and #surviving #NaNo with @meganslayer

Each November, I get a crazy burr in my bonnet and decide to take part in NaNo. You might wonder what NaNo is. It’s National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo or NaNo for short. You can find out more here: https://nanowrimo.org  30 days of writing your heart out to get to fifty thousand words and hopefully a finished novel. The idea is to just write. Get the words down. Don’t worry about editing it–that’s for December and beyond. If you reach 50k, then you’re a winner. You have to validate the word count, but yay! If not, then ya know…it happens.

I try NaNo every year. I think it’s my sick fascination with trying to get those words down. Plus, I’m crazy and need that deadline.

But there are struggles with this goal. There is the constant struggle of getting the words down. I’ve had outlines and things written out, but can’t always find the time to get the words into the computer. I get down on myself because I know what I have to do and how to do it, but the words may or may not come.

Then there’s the pressure of seeing your friends winning at the goal. The whole idea is to win. Duh. But sometimes I get down on myself because I see others finishing ahead of me and I feel like I’m not doing well enough because I can’t keep up. That’s silly because if the words are there, it shouldn’t matter how fast I get them down. Truthfully, the hardest part is just surviving. #IwillsurviveNaNo

Then there’s the cheating. I don’t mean cheating by using old words to win. Nope. I mean cheating by not writing the whole 50k for ONE book. I’m guilty of that. I’ll use the goal for 50k to finish one or two shorter books I need to complete. Am I bad? Probably. I don’t mind. I know I’ll get those books done. I’ve done full-length 50k stories during NaNo, but I’m bad and don’t do it that way every year.

What about you? Do you NaNo? Do you do something else? Want to be friends on the NaNo site? Find me and friend me 🙂 https://nanowrimo.org/participants/wendi-zwaduk

Halloween Festivities and the Pass of Time…Plus Vampires with @MeganSlayer #vampires #novella #gayromance #halloween

Halloween is sort of a bittersweet time of year for me. It’s the changing of the season. The leaves are starting to fall, the temps are cooler and I can break out the comforter again. It’s when the decorations start coming out and everything looks festive…if not a little creepy. I love it.

I’m a cool weather kid. Not COLD weather, but cool. I like when I can snuggle up. I’d rather be chilled than sweating any day.

But this time of year is bittersweet, like I said. The sports season my family takes part in, cross country, is mainly over by Halloween. The weather is a tad too chilly for running, although they still do get out there. But it’s the end of the season. Another year done. One year closer to when I don’t have an athlete in the house. Boo.

Then there’s the change in attitude. We used to carve pumpkins and trick or treat. Pumpkin carving should still take place, but I’m the one usually doing it. No one else wants to handle the muck. Ha ha. But the trick or treating… I never thought there was a time when you were too old to T-or-T. As long as you’re not causing trouble and you’re having fun… I don’t see an issue. But there are rules restricting the age of some T-or-T-ers around where I live. So my family doesn’t T-orT any longer. Nope. I buy a chunk of fudge, usually peanut butter fudge for the manchildren to devour and maybe a box of chocolate covered strawberries for me and that’s it. Kind of sad. No candy to last forever. No candy-fest the night of Halloween.

So what do we do instead? A Halloween run, of course. I’m not much of a runner. My knees can’t handle it. I used to dance in high school and one too many connections with the concrete floor did more damage than I’d like to admit. But I try to run. I get out there. My family, though, they are the runners.

Instead of a big bag of candy, they’ll get yet another drawstring bag, but also the thrill of accomplishing a run. The thrill of making great time and having fun while sweating in costume. I’ll be there, dressed as Wendy from Peter Pan and cheering. Why not? It’ll be a good time.

But that’s why this season is bittersweet. We’ve gone from costumes and T-or-T to running. The scare factor is still there, but it’s also included with thumping shoes and getting up at the butt crack of dawn to hustle. Could be worse. Could be no Halloween at my house at all. I’m okay with the change. I’m getting used to it. We’ll watch scary movies, a few not so scary ones and the Garfield Halloween Special. I’ll do their makeup for the run and we’ll do a lot of laughing. It’ll be worth it.

Besides, I still have my black cat decorations all over and my scary vampire obsession. Speaking of vampires…

Now for the Friday Flirt!

©Megan Slayer, 2016, All Rights Reserved

Just a few more movies and he’d be done. Kris Hunter curled the pages of the script in both hands. A dull ache started behind his eyes. He’d become popular in the adult film industry but desperately wanted to get out. Starring in porn paid the bills, but didn’t soothe his primal need to create. Shouting ‘take that cock up your ass now’ got old after a while.

He raked his fingers through his hair and read through his lines again. There wasn’t much to the script. A few lines about getting to know his playmate, then naked time. God. He’d been asked to star in another first experience flick. He should’ve known better.

If he wanted to get out of the business, he’d have to star in a few more films and bank up the rest of the money he needed. Time to get his head into the game.

“It’s your first time? A sexy man like you? Can’t be.”

Kris nodded. He needed to get into the headspace of a guy who wanted to hook up with a younger man. Gag. At twenty-seven, he wasn’t that fucking old. Still, he needed the money to fund his dream. He formed an image of his costar in his mind. Although he wasn’t attracted to the other performer, Kris did his best to act the part.

“That’s right,” Kris murmured. “You know how to kiss.”

His costar, Garig Ross, strode into the living room. “Are you actually practicing your lines?”

Kris opened his eyes. He hadn’t realized he’d closed them. “Go fuck yourself.”

“Now that’s not the way to entice me to want to be fucked by you.” Garig shrugged out of his street clothes. Unlike Kris, Garig seemed to love being nude. He folded his jeans and tucked his things into his duffle bag. “You’re supposed to make me at least kind of want to be with you.”

“I don’t want to be here or with you.” Kris dropped the script onto his bag. “I’m tired of these movies.”

“So?” Garig shook out the ripped denim. He waved the jeans around. “This won’t cover my ass.”

“That’s the point. You’re supposed to look young, interested, and green as hell but ready to take a seven-inch cock up your tight ass.” Kris rolled his eyes. “You’re young, but you are no virgin.”

“Don’t you know it.” Garig stepped into the jeans, then slid his cowboy boots back on. He admired his ass in the mirror. “Papa likes what he sees.”

If Kris had been on the prowl for a date and wasn’t picky, he might have hooked up with Garig for real. The guy was handsome. From his perfectly styled hair combed to appear as if he’d rolled straight out of bed, down his chiseled body to his sculpted legs, he personified sexy. Most guys wanted to fuck him—except Kris.

He’d made fifteen flicks with Garig. None of them endeared Garig to him. The guy might be hot, but he was also a hot mess. He dropped his pants for everyone and God only knew if he was careful.

“We’re going to do this thing.” Garig wriggled into the vest. His pierced nipples glinted in the light. “What are you saving all that money for?”

“Nothing.” Kris glanced in the mirror and slicked his hair back. He never wore his hair forward in the films. The combed-back style made him feel like the character rather than himself. Maybe that was crazy, but he preferred having the bit of separation.

He tucked his wallet, keys and phone into his bag, then stripped down to his running pants and the tank top. According to the script, he was supposed to start out on his balcony. Garig would be on the balcony next door, flirting.

He closed his eyes again. Three more films and he’d have enough money. A momentary vision popped into his brain. He didn’t want to be in front of the camera without his clothes. He’d be making actual movies with plots and good actors. Even if he had to fund the damn thing himself, he was going to be a real actor in a real movie. He opened his eyes. Get the film done and move forward.

“All right. Let’s go,” the director said. He pointed to Kris. “Your condoms and lube are beside the bed.”

“You’d make so much more money if you’d just do these bare.” Garig shrugged. “I’m raking it in.”

“I’m fine with what I’m doing.” At least when they worked, he knew he was safe. Kris made his way through the bedroom and stopped on the balcony.

“You’re going to chat him up. Stick to the script if you want, but you have to say he’s a hot piece of ass and you want to do him,” the director said. He clapped Kris on the shoulder. “Just make it sound intelligent and like you really want him.”

God. Kris stood on the balcony and gripped the railing. Three years before, he’d have considered throwing himself over the edge. Too many demons remained with him. He shook off the black feelings and focused on the job at hand.

“Ready? Action.” The director pointed to him. The camera clicked.

Time to shine. Kris gripped the railing again and stared at the city below. The palm trees waved in the slight breeze. Cars zipped down the street.

“There is nothing happening in this city.” He sighed. “Nothing.”

Garig appeared on his own balcony. “I don’t know about that.”

“Oh?” Kris leaned against his railing. “You’re new.”

“I am, and in more ways than you know.” Garig grinned. “Where’s your boyfriend?”

Ah. They weren’t following the script at all. Kris folded his hands. “I’m single. You?”

“Ready to mingle,” Garig replied. “Let me come over.”

“The door is open.” Kris nodded toward the other side of the apartment. “Let yourself in.”

“Cut,” the director shouted. “Reset. Good take.”

Kris groaned. He knew what to do next. Hell, he’d been a professional in the adult world since he’d turned twenty-one, six years ago. But he wanted more out of life. Unfortunately, life didn’t want him to graduate beyond the blow jobs and anal sex on camera. He thought back to his high school career. He’d nailed the Shakespeare plays and the dippy romantic comedies the drama club insisted on presenting every spring. He loved the rush of performing and the grit of having to work with others for that play to turn out right.

He glanced over at Garig. The only acting he’d get to do now would be to appear to be interested in what was going on. Another player strolled into the room. Not a grip or a camera man. Kris studied the new guy. Young and very eager. The kid practically bounced over to the director.

“Who?” Kris heard the director ask. “Oh. Over there. You know what to do.”

The kid crossed the room and stood in front of Kris. He didn’t say anything, just stared at him.

Writing and Black and White Movies with @MeganSlayer #inspiration #writing #B&Wmovies

When I’m writing, there are a few things I love to have making noise for me. I’m that kind of writer who can’t concentrate without movies or music playing. I’ve always been like that. I get in phases, too. I get where I want nothing but music while I’m writing. No pictures. Just tunes. Then other times I’ll get into a phase where I want music and words while I’m writing. It’s a quirk of mine. Sometimes I want those movies to be documentaries…you know, stuff that features biographies, or stories about real people. Other times I just want fantasy. Then there are the quirky moments when I want black and white movies. I know a lot of them are schlocky. A lot of them are rehashed, too. But that doesn’t matter. For the most part, there’s a happy ending. That’s what I want. I want the bad guys to get theirs, the good guys to get the girl or guy and to feel satisfied when I’m done with the movie. There are a few exceptions.

I swore up and down I’d never watch “Goodbye, Mr. Chips”, but I did. It wasn’t the ending I thought it should be, but I saw why the movie won awards. Then I watched “Now, Voyager”. I’ve got a soft spot for Bette Davis, but this movie had a few things that bothered me–like when Davis took the little girl out for a camping trip. Not her own daughter and then she told the asylum she’d like to keep her longer… Um that wouldn’t happen nowadays. But the story was interesting. And it was Bette Davis!

Now I’m down to the wire on a couple of deadlines. I need to get these books done. Not because the publisher will say something, but because NaNo is coming and I want a clean calendar to start the month off right. So I’m off to find another black and white movie…”Casablanca” sounds good…so I can hit my deadlines.

In the meantime, how about a snippet from my latest release, Biting Love? Here you go!

“Okay, then where’s your boyfriend?”

“Don’t have one.” Not since Seth dumped him a year ago. Seth wanted to sleep around and Parker wanted monogamy. According to Seth, gay men couldn’t be monogamous. The asshole. Parker tried to get him back, but Seth never called him again.

“You should.” Anson grasped Parker’s hand. “But it makes this so much easier.”

“Me? I? What?” Oh Jesus, he had to stop talking. He made no sense and he could’ve sworn Anson wanted to kiss him.

“It’s rather difficult to ask someone out if they’ve already got a date or boyfriend.” Anson scooted he chair around the table until he sat next to Parker. “Right?”

“You’re asking me out?” He must’ve heard Anson wrong and understood the wrong vibes. “Really?”

“Of course…unless you don’t want to.” Anson trailed his fingers down the back of Parker’s neck. His eyes shimmered. “Not interested?”

“I…yes.” Christ. Start going for what you want, Parker. “I’d like a date. Yes. But I need some time. I mean—not tonight.” Shit. He was fucking up the plan. “I mean…”

“I’m pretty free. What works for you?”

“Uh…I need to get this paper down. But I’ve got time around lunch tomorrow. If I can get this turned in before tomorrow night, I’ll be free for Halloween. Would lunch work? Then if you don’t like me, we’re not committed to a night date?” He’d just talked himself out of a date. Shit.

“No good. I’m…in a class at lunch.” Anson draped his arm across the back of Parker’s chair. “I’m better at night.”

“Oh.” Anson didn’t strike him as a college student. “Which class? I could meet you at your building afterward.”

“Uh…it’s off campus at the sculpture building at the old farm.” Anson nodded. “You know, all of those power tools and bending machines. They can’t have it too close to campus in case one of the artists does something crazy.”

“I doubt that.” He turned in his seat to face Anson. “The worst you could do is burn down the building, but why? Performance art? Nah. You’re all careful. It’s a reason to be out there.” He wanted to touch Anson and prove to himself the man was real. He rested his forearms on his thighs instead. “I’ve never been to the arts building out there, so I wouldn’t know too much about it.”

“Oh? Why not?”

“No wheels.” Embarrassment washed over him. If his dorky personality wasn’t enough to push Anson away, his lack of a car would be the topper. “I had to sell my car to make my tuition payment. My job at the front desk at the student housing complex was cut.”

“That’s awful.” Anson didn’t pull away. He kept caressing Parker’s biceps.

“Unless I can find a sugar daddy or get some cash flowing from my writing, I’ll have to get a part time job over at the burger joint across from the student center. It’s not a bad job, but I’d rather be writing.” He smiled to hide how he felt—embarrassed, dejected, screwed over. He had to get more positivity into his life, but damn it. Life kept throwing him curveballs.

“You never told me what you write.” Anson wriggled his eyebrows. “Anything juicy?”

“No.” Here he wanted to be a writer and he hadn’t self-promoted. Bad Parker. “Science fiction with a little paranormal mixed in. It really depends on the day and my mood. I’ve got one about aliens invading the earth and this one is more paranormal.”

“Really?” Anson smiled.

Parker couldn’t read his expression. “You don’t like it? Too out there for you?”

“No, I’m fascinated.”

“You are?”

The hot water sluiced over Ryan’s body and took away the sting from overexerting his muscles. Eight kicks in one game wasn’t his usual. But with Jason Eckles, the normal punter, out with a broken toe, Ryan had picked Jason’s punts in addition to his usual point after kicks. Thankfully the Dragons had won. He had something to be happy about. They had creamed the Griffins, beating them by more than twenty points.

He turned off the spray then shook the water out of his hair. His thoughts wandered to Paul. Every time he had looked over at the Griffins’ bench, Paul had sat staring in his direction. Ryan covered himself with a towel then palmed his crotch. The nice thing about being the last one in the showers was that the rest of the team had vacated the locker rooms by the time he finished. The alone time enabled him to settle down and plot out what he wanted to do for the next game.

Footsteps slapped on the concrete and the sound grew closer. Ryan poked his head out of the shower room. His breath hitched and his grip on the towel loosened. Paul Toth in the flesh…in the opposing team’s locker room.

Paul tossed his bag on the floor. His eyes blazed with anger and frustration. “There you are.”

“Here I am,” Ryan replied. He retied the towel and hoped his erection wasn’t obvious. Then again, what did he care? “You’re in foreign territory.”

“I get by.” Paul levelled his muscle-corded shoulders. “You never answered my question.”

Ryan’s heartbeat hiked up and blood surged through his veins. He’d fucked things up before by succumbing to his shyness. No more letting the past get in the way of his future. Besides, talking with Paul wasn’t going to lead anywhere, was it? But if it did, Ryan would take every advantage.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t.” Ryan stepped toe to toe with Paul. He kind of liked craving a man who stood a couple of inches taller than he did. “I don’t have anything against you. You’re a very sexy guy.” He measured his words. “Caught me off guard when you remembered my name at the school. We don’t talk much, you being on the opposing team and all. I’m glad you came in here.”

“Oh.” Paul’s lips parted and his gaze softened. He wobbled a bit on his feet. “Thought maybe we could go for coffee.”

“That’s a possibility.” The heat from Paul’s body radiated over Ryan. He breathed in the scent of Paul, sweat and deodorant…and something pine. If Ryan bounced on his toes, he’d be able to kiss Paul.

Paul’s Adam’s apple bobbed. “Um…”

“Are you going to kiss me or just stand there?” Ryan assumed his role as the dominant. He didn’t give Paul time to answer and captured his mouth in a kiss. Paul softened and gripped Ryan’s arms. His tongue tangled with Ryan’s and his cock pushed against the tent in Ryan’s towel. Ryan swallowed Paul’s groan, then broke the connection.

Pink tinged Paul’s cheeks and his eyelids drooped. “Whoa.”

“I’ve got you down to one-syllable words. Nice.” Ryan sidestepped Paul and opened his locker. “Guess that also answers your question.” He yanked his shirt down past his head then hiked his boxer shorts past his hips.

“Can we go somewhere and talk?”

Writing What You Love with @MeganSlayer #vampires #gayromance #eroticromance #gay From the Paranormal Romantics Blog

I am part of a book club, well 2, and for one of them we have to read the book the group selects. I don’t mind. These tend to be books I wouldn’t have read otherwise. So I’d finished the book selected for this month and was returning it to the library. I told the librarian that I’d returned it, so when she saw it in the return…that’s why. She asked me what I thought about the book. It wasn’t my favorite story. It wasn’t. I had some issues with the way the author wrote the true crime story. He focused more on his thoughts and his insertion into the story, while trying to claim it was a true crime kind of tale. If he’d said it was a work of fiction, then he was spot on, but by calling it true crime…well, I disagreed.

Here’s the thing, the librarian then said to me, well you have to write what you know. He must feel that close to the story.

She’s right. He must’ve felt that close to the story. To be honest, the crime he wrote about hit me hard, too. But I’m not a crime writer. I get too antsy during mystery books and want to disclose whodunit immediately. I guess it’s part of my short attention span. But what she said got me to thinking. Write what I know? Or write what my imagination and the characters dictate?

I tend to write what I want based on what the characters tell me to do. Really. I tried to write more than a few times to what I knew. It’s only worked when my characters share some of my experiences. Okay, so I don’t personally know any vampires and I haven’t chatted up a zombie, but that’s my imagination. I don’t know if I wrote a story that focused just on my personal experience, if it would be a good story. I don’t know. I guess it would be more of an autobiography than a work of fiction. Although I suppose the book would be a mix of both. My memories aren’t photographic. For all I know, I’d probably embellish–not to make the tale better, but because that’s how I’d remembered it.

But I haven’t written that story about my experiences. I’ve written about vampires, zombies, shifters, romance, love and people finding second chances. It’s been fantastic. I love it. I’ve written with my friends and written alone. I can’t wait to get my next book out there. I hope you all enjoy them. 🙂

Here’s a little bit about my upcoming story, Biting Love. It’s part of the series I wrote as a crossover to Madison Sevier’s Rosie Peaks series. Check it out!!

Mix one vampire with one human who doesn’t believe in the paranormal and add some sizzle.
Anson wasn’t looking for a partner when he spotted the handsome human, but he’s not about to argue when the mood strikes. He’s got to bring a date to the Halloween bash and Parker fits his bill exactly. Now all he needs to do is convince Parker that vampires truly exist.
Parker is practical, intelligent and a little on the geeky side. He can’t believe his eyes—a handsome man has not only hit on him, but asked him out…to a masquerade ball. He doesn’t believe in vampires, but Anson wears his Dracula costume a bit too well.
Can these two find love and trust after all or will the sparks only last until the dawn?
