He deserved to live the life he wanted.

Cain hurried down the back steps clutching his bag. The valet from before stood by the doors leading to the garage.

“Sir?” He opened the door for Cain. “Going out?”

“To Aidyn’s.” Cain winked. “You know.”

“I used to.” The man smiled. “Shall I let your mother in on this?”

“Please do. I’ll be over there for a few days.” He winked again and elbowed the valet. “We don’t plan on coming up for air in that time.” God, he was laying it on thick.

“Yes, sir.” The valet dispatched a driver, then disappeared into the main portion of the house.

Cain slipped into the back seat of the limo and waited until the car moved. His heart hammered. He was doing it—leaving the nest. He’d lied, of course, but that didn’t matter. Fuck it. His hands shook and he held the bag tight. He’d never acted out before, never tried to be something he wasn’t or push anyone. He’d fallen right into line because it had been required of him.

The driver dropped him off at Aidyn’s hotel. Instead of expecting the car to wait on him, Cain waved him home. “Get some rest. God knows I won’t be.” He grinned. “I’ll call for you.”

The driver nodded once and left.

Cain ducked into the hotel. He’d never stayed at this particular building and hoped no one would recognize him without his Cain Ables celebrity persona in place. He was just Cain Ables, regular guy.

He headed through the lobby to the side entrance. An attendant smiled at him. “May I help you, sir?”

“I’d like a taxi to the airport.” Holy fuck. He was doing this. “Please?”

“Sure.” The attendant waved down one of the drivers. “May I help you with anything else?”

“No, thank you.” He shook hands with the man and settled into the back seat of the taxi. As the car sped toward the airport, Cain sighed. He’d really escaped. His parents would be thrilled when they found out he was at the hotel with a woman. He was being the bad-boy actor everyone expected.

Except he wasn’t bad and he wasn’t with a woman. Fear and doubt crept into his brain. Part of him wasn’t sure he could get away with his act of transgression. The rest of him couldn’t wait to get to Ohio and be a nobody.

Time to be myself.

Can these two opposites find the right rhythm?

Jon Kagan likes his life. He’s carefree unless he’s in the recording studio with his trumpet. Then he’s serious as hell. He plays the field like he does the notes on each track, but the single life isn’t fun any longer. He wants a lover and partner. But how can he find the man of his dreams when the only people he spends time with are the same musicians night after night? He’s convinced he won’t–until he meets Benny. Then all bets are off.

Benny Walters burns the midnight oil, too, but not in the music business. He’d rather work on houses than play tunes. Putting in a good sweat over a flooring job or painting a room makes him happy–almost as much as watching the hot guy who jogs across the neighborhood in the middle of the day. When he finally talks to Jon, sparks fly. He’d love to get to know Jon better, but confidence isn’t his strong point. Will he be able to get beyond his past and find the future he deserves?

Love happens in the strangest places, especially when it hits all the right notes.

“Are you painting the outside of the house? You mentioned something about gray.” Jon didn’t want to end the conversation. He’d grown fond of Benny, even after a few minutes of chatting.

“Oh, no. My friend is having new siding put on, but I’m not doing it. No, I posed the question in front of your friend there, because you looked like you’d rather eat scorpions than talk to him.”

He laughed again and rocked on his feet. He liked the way Benny talked. “I’m glad you did.” And even gladder he got the chance to meet Benny.

“I should get back to the shingles. It’s hot and not all that sexy, but it pays the bills.”

“I’m sure it does.” Jon glanced over at the house, then met Benny’s gaze. “If I’m ever in the mood to redo my house, can I call you?” Christ, his hands shook. He hadn’t been this nervous in ages. Because of Benny?

“Sure. I don’t have business cards or anything, but I’m licensed and bonded.”

“I didn’t doubt it.” He slid his phone from the holder around his forearm. “Give me your number and I’ll add you.”

“555-6620.”

“Ask for Benny?” Jon smiled. He could’ve sworn the afternoon heat increased a few degrees each time he looked into Benny’s eyes.

“It’s my personal number. No assistants or anything. I’m not that big.” He blushed. “So you’ll have to talk to me.”

“There’s nothing wrong with that.” He inputted the info, then tucked the phone back into the holder. “I’ll let you shingle. It was nice to meet you. Feel free to rescue me again.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” Benny grinned and hefted a pack of shingles onto his shoulder. He climbed the ladder up to the porch roof and flexed as he put the shingles down.

Jon whimpered. Benny could really haul. “Do you run?”

Benny stepped to the edge of the roof and rested his hands on his hips. “What?”

“Do you run? Exercise?”

“I lift weights. Why?”

“I thought maybe you’d like to go for a run with me sometime.” Holy fuck, he’d just kind of asked Benny out. Hell yeah.

“You always run in the afternoon. I’m a morning guy.”

“Oh.” Jon paused. Benny was supposed to agree to join him. That’s what the other guys did… Well, shit. Jon twiddled with his headphones. “Wait, how’d you know about my run times?”

“You go past here nearly every day and have since the first of June. You’re hard to miss.”

“Is that a good thing?” Or bad? He hoped for the former.

“I’m just observant.”

And noncommittal with his answers. Damn it. “Okay, well, I’ll see you around. Maybe tomorrow when I run past here.”

“Same time, same channel,” Benny said. He waved and returned to the shingles.

What an odd guy, but handsome as hell and intriguing, too.

Jon headed home, but his thoughts never left Benny. The man knew the right moment to step in, which was kind of nice, and not Jon’s regular type. He liked pretty boys. Musicians or vocalists. He snorted and stopped in his driveway. He had no idea if Benny was even gay, much less if he was interested. The answer to his run question had been vague. Probably because Benny wasn’t homosexual.

He strode up the drive to the front porch and into his house, and kicked off his running shoes. He downed a bottle of water in what seemed like a single gulp. Trust him to find the one guy who wasn’t interested, and find him attractive.

He had to be out of his mind, but he wanted to go back. Wanted to talk to Benny and get to know him better.

He did have Benny’s number. What could he break in order to get the handsome home remodeler to come over?

Matthew opened the door. “It’s eight in the morning and I’m tired. I don’t care if it is fifty degrees out, I’m not running right now.” He frowned. “Wait, you said you had a problem. Did you get my mail again?”

“Sort of, maybe?” Tommy bit back his desperation and fear. “I found kittens.”

“Kittens?” Matthew peeked into the box. “They’re only a few days old, but their eyes are open. Where were they? Is the mother with them?”

“I found these three in the bushes.” He fought to catch his breath. “I don’t know what to do. I think the momma perished.”

Matthew sighed. “Jesus.”

“If you don’t want to give me a hand, I’ll take them to the clinic.” Tommy covered the mewling kittens with the towels and box flaps. “Sorry I bothered you.”

“If you take them to the clinic, they could put them down,” Matthew said. “Kittens without a mother require special attention we don’t have at the clinic and they might not survive anyway.”

“That’s terrible.” Tommy shook his head. “Look, I don’t know anything about them. Shouldn’t I have bottles and formula or something? I’ll take care of them.” He needed to be sure about the mother cat, though. “Will you check on Momma? I’ll pay you for the home visit.”

Matthew shoved his feet into a pair of boots. “I didn’t think you were an animal lover.”

“I didn’t think you were so heartless,” Tommy snapped. “Put them down? They’d truly do that?”

Matthew grabbed his scarf. “First, I said they might—not me. Second, they are young kittens. It can be tricky because they’re so small. The averages aren’t in their favor if the mother has rejected them. It’s not being cruel. It’s being honest. That said, I’ll help you. I can’t imagine being left alone, even if today is the warmest it’s been all year. Where’s the mother?”

“In the bushes. Can’t miss her. Ginger cat by the bush closest to the flower box,” Tommy said. “Do I take these guys inside?”

“Take them to my living room. I’ve got milk replacer at the house. If the mother has expired, I’ll show you what to do to give the kittens get the best start. Ensure they’re warm. Pushy will try to get involved, so just let her. She simply wants to investigate and won’t hurt them.” Matthew hustled past the hedgerow and across Tommy’s lawn.

Tommy stepped into Matthew’s house. He’d never been inside before. The best he’d done was catch glimpses of the interior when he’d gone for an evening run and Matthew’s lights were on.

Pushy trotted up to Tommy. She didn’t bark but wagged her tail. She sniffed at the box until he put the cardboard on the floor. He had petted her head and chatted to her plenty of times when she’d managed to tunnel under the fence between his and Matthew’s yards. “Hi, Push.” He sat on the floor. “I’ve got kittens. See?” He moved one of the flaps. “Three kittens.”

Pushy whined and nosed the box, then let out what sounded like a howl.

Tommy petted her, trying to soothe the dog. “I’m sorry, Push. What’s wrong?”

Matthew strode into the house. “Momma has expired. She probably froze to death or starved trying to protect them. She was so thin.”

Tommy’s heart sank. He’d hoped she could be saved. “Why don’t you keep these guys, Squeak, Eek and Meek? I’ve got a shoebox and will bury Momma.” He stood. “When I’m done, you can give me the rundown as to how to take care of them.”

“You’re sure you want to take them in?”

“Someone has to. They’ve had a rough start in life and it’s the least I can do, giving them a fighting chance. It’s the official first day of spring and everyone needs that chance to survive.”

“I admire you, Tommy.”

“Don’t admire me until we know they’re all okay.” He half-smiled, faking confidence, then abandoned the box. He headed outside and over to his garage. Once he’d emptied a shoebox, he took to the task of giving Momma a proper burial. He might not be able to help her, but he could take care of her babies. If it meant spending time with Matthew, then even better.

Spring was supposed to be the time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe he and Matthew could form a strong alliance or something more.

I never thought Matthew and I could bond over a triad of abandoned kittens.

Matt busied himself with straightening the counter space and trying not to watch Jacen. Fuck. How could he not? The man featured in his dreams and had become his favorite spank bank material. He swept his gaze over Jacen. The denim shorts hugged his hips and accentuated the strength in his legs. Jacen rubbed the back of his neck with his fingers and flexed his upper body.

Jesus. Was Jacen trying to turn him on? If so, he’d accomplished his mission. Matt plopped onto the stool and pressed his knees together. Blood rushed to his cock and his mouth watered. Just a few touches. Kisses. He didn’t want much. Really.

“Mother fucker.” Jacen whipped around and held his phone in a white-knuckled grasp as he strode back to the desk. “He’s a piece of shit. Where are those peas?”

Matt offered up the bag. “Whoever it is, I hope you lit into him.” He shut the laptop down, then moved the device to the lower portion of the counter. “Better pick up your key before you forget.” He slid the card across to Jacen. “Have a good night…well, a better one than you’ve had so far.”

“Huh?” Jacen glared at Matt and plunked the bag back onto his bruise. “Are you here all night? I thought Cady hired on people to work the desk so you and her weren’t stuck.”

“She did, but this is my night. I have to earn my keep somehow.” He grinned to hide his displeasure. “I can’t feed my music and running habits without some source of income.”

Jacen tucked his phone into his pocket and lingered at the counter. “Want some company? I came here to work on music, yeah, but that wasn’t the only reason.” He offered up the bag. “I’ve melted this.”

“I’ll stick it back in the freezer. No problem.” He gripped the melting frozen food. “Stick around a moment in case anyone comes in and I’ll put it back.” He left Jacen alone long enough to put the peas in the fridge. He’d probably make them for lunch the next day instead of wasting them. When he returned, Jacen had rounded the counter.

“All good?” Jacen asked.

“I’ve got lunch for tomorrow.” He tensed. “Thanks for holding down the fort.” He expected Jacen to leave, but instead, he crept closer to Matt.

“I didn’t just return for Rory and the music. I came here for you, too.”

“Me?” He frowned. “What?” He had to be hearing Jacen wrong. No way Jacen meant that.

“Uh, yeah. You.”

“I’m glad you heard me.” Dayton sagged in the seat. “I have no idea who tried to run me over.” He paused. “It wasn’t you, was it?”

“No.” He parked in the first empty spot. “I was at my desk.”

“I figured.” Dayton groaned. “You came quick.”

“I heard you scream.” He turned off the engine. “It could’ve been you or anyone else, and I would’ve tried to help.”

“I’m glad you’re brave,” Dayton said. “Thanks.”

“I’m not brave.” He left the car and rounded the hood. He opened Dayton’s door. Most of the time, he was the timid guy. He shied away from physical drama. He’d rather write drama. But he couldn’t ignore the scream. He held the door for Dayton and offered his arm. “Ready?”

“Yeah.” He huddled against Nicholas as they went into the quick care clinic. “I’m sorry,” Dayton said. “I hate being a pain in the ass.”

“Huh?” Nicholas guided Dayton to a seat. “You’re fine.”

A nurse approached with a tablet. “Fill this out. Did you check in?”

Nicholas handed Dayton the wallet. “We did.” He wasn’t sure how to help.

“Yeah.” Dayton accepted the tablet. He dug his insurance card from his wallet. “Dayton Sharpe.”

“Yes. You’re third in line.” She nodded. “We have a forty-dollar co-pay. Input your information, and I’ll make a copy of your card and license. Bring the tablet and payment up to me when you’re done. If you’re not mobile, your boyfriend can do it for you.”

Dayton handed over the needed items. “Thanks.” He paused. “Boyfriend? No.”

“Brother?” she asked.

“Friend,” Nicholas offered. He wanted to hide. Boyfriend? Not likely. Dayton tended to date blonds, and his hair would never work as a blond.

“I’ll bring it over.” Dayton nodded. “Thank you.” Once the nurse had left, Dayton mumbled, “I hate hospitals and clinics.”

“You’re hurt. You have to be here.” Nicholas folded his arms. He wasn’t sure what to do next.

“Maybe.” Dayton sighed and fiddled with the tablet. “I’m sorry I’m being a pain in the ass.”

“You’ve apologized already, and no, you’re not being one. You were nearly run over,” Nicholas said. “You’re always on the go. Let yourself have time to heal and rest.”

“I appreciate you giving me a ride.”

“I was there for a reason.” He still felt a tad pushy, but oh well.

“I’m glad,” Dayton said. “I doubt I would’ve made much progress crawling home without your save.” He grasped Nicholas’s hand. “Thanks.”

“Welcome.” Tingles shot from Nicholas’s fingers to his heart. He’d wanted Dayton’s attention for so long. He could have it if things were different. Right now, Dayton needed him, but not for more than a ride. He hated and loved himself for making such a fuss over Dayton. They were barely friends, but now they could be more. He wanted to date Dayton–not be his taxi driver. Would that be possible? Christ. He had to stop overthinking. He was just helping the guy holding his hand. Nothing big. Right?

He listened to the silence on the other end of the line as Evan hung up. What an odd guy. He didn’t understand the relationship between Evan and Martha, but the way they conducted themselves wasn’t his business. He stepped back into her room. “Martha?”

“Mick.” She’d closed her eyes.

“He’s coming. He’ll be here tomorrow.” Mick resumed his spot on the plastic chair. “I’ll collect him when he flies in.”

“Good.” She sighed. “Now we can all get some rest.”

“Yes.” He stayed in the room until the nurse returned. He needed to get some sleep and recharge for tomorrow. If he had to drive into Cleveland, then he should be rested up. God, he hated traffic.

His phone pinged with a new text. He checked the screen. Evan had indeed texted him with his flight number, arrival time and gate number. Well, color me shocked. Part of Mick had expected Evan to stand him up. He hadn’t.

Mick sent a reply.

Thanks. Will be waiting in the baggage claims area.

He’d done what Martha had wanted and rounded up Evan. He couldn’t help but be intrigued. He vaguely remembered Evan from school and hadn’t been impressed. Evan had been self-absorbed and devoted to his music.

He’d also been very straight.

Mick paused.

If Evan was straight, why would Martha be trying to fix him up with Mick? He didn’t know and wasn’t going to try to figure it out.

He tucked his phone into his pocket. Before he went home, he needed to stop by his office. The paperwork had piled up and he hated being at the hospital. He should get work done and catch a nap. According to Evan’s text, he’d be on the last red-eye flight. If the plane was on time, then he’d have to get up early to be at the airport to drive Evan home.

He was too nice a guy. That was his problem. He helped too much for too little in return. Being nice wasn’t getting him anywhere or doing anything for his career. Sure, being the good guy and saving the day fulfilled him, but sometimes it seemed like he spent more time on things for others than on himself.

He left the hospital. If nothing else, he hoped Evan would do right by his grandmother and be an adult. There was no time to coddle him through the estate process. Martha didn’t have much time left and Evan would have to take over—whether he liked it or not.

Mick massaged his forehead and settled behind the wheel of his car. What have I gotten myself into?

Tate sighed and gripped the nearly empty bottle. He shifted on the seat enough to look at Raine. “You asked me, so I’ll ask you. Where’s your boyfriend?”

“Don’t have one.” The blush returned. “Single and ready to mingle or whatever it’s called.”

“Oh.” Perfect.

Raine waved his hands. The beer sloshed in his bottle. “Strike that. I mean… Christ, I don’t know what I mean. I don’t have a boyfriend. The last time I tried to date, the guy said I was too nerdy and turned me down.”

He placed his palm on Raine’s thigh. “What if I said I wouldn’t?”

Raine dropped the bottle onto his lap and yelped. “Wait. Wouldn’t turn me down?” He wound his fingers around the neck of the beer and stared at Tate. “You just met me.”

“So?” Tate stood, then put his bottle on the makeshift coffee table. “Sometimes things are meant to happen fast.”

“Fast maybe, but are you sure? I’m…no one. I bet Blake has a guy over there that’s more like what you want.” He scrambled to his feet. “Someone hotter.”

“You’re one of the sexiest men I’ve ever met.” Tate tugged Raine into his arms and stuffed his hands into Raine’s back pockets. He liked the way they fit together. “Dance with me. The music is just loud enough for ambience.”

“Sure.” Raine bowed his head and draped his arms around Tate’s shoulders. “I’m not very good at dancing.”

As they swayed together, Tate held Raine to his chest and breathed in the scent of him. Spicy, but fresh. He rested his chin on Raine’s shoulder and feathered a kiss over Raine’s neck. “You’re doing a great job.”

“Am I?”

The two men—he wasn’t sure who was Jeremiah and who was Carson—took him down a long hallway to a room. When the taller one opened the door, bright white light spilled into the darkened corridor.

“This is our room. First we talk then we play. Do you think you’re able to keep up with us?” The shorter of the two men leveled his gaze at Rocke. He stood only about an inch shorter than Rocke’s six foot frame. His jaw flexed as he stared at Rocke, and a tiny bit of scruff glimmered on his cheeks.

At this point, Rocke didn’t have anything to lose. He’d been pushed away by all but the last two Doms in the building. Rocke sighed and dipped his head. “I’d like to play.”

“Very well.” The taller one ushered him into the room. Unlike the other rooms, this particular room more resembled a bedroom. No BDSM bed or bar contraptions. There was just a plain bed with white sheets. Thick carpet muffled their footsteps as the Doms led him to a leather couch and armchair. The room reminded him more of an apartment than a play place.

“Before we get down to business, my name is Carson.” The taller one extended his hand. “This is my partner, Jeremiah. We’ve been together for eight years. We don’t take many subs, and when we do, it’s only one at a time. You are Rocke Houseman, correct? Sit.”

Something in Carson’s voice made Rocke want to comply. He debated sitting on the chair but only for a moment. This was a test—had to be. He knelt on the floor at their feet and bowed his head. Fuck. His knee screamed with pain, but he ignored the hurt. He’d never get better if he kept giving in to his injury.

“Very good but we don’t want you on the floor. Sit in the chair.” Carson perched on the edge of the sofa, and Jeremiah stood behind him with his arms folded. Where Jeremiah seemed to be covered in sleeves of tattoos, Carson was all pristine muscle. Carson leaned forward. “We could read the tablet and find out what your boundaries are, but we’d rather hear them from you.”

Rocke’s gaze vacillated between the two men. Most Doms didn’t want to talk. They read the dossier and went right into play. Rocke wobbled to his feet, careful not to wrench his knee, then sat on the armchair. The shards of pain subsided, and he laced his fingers together. Hopefully, Carson and Jeremiah hadn’t seen him wince.

“Go on,” Jeremiah prompted. The harness he wore bit into his muscled chest.

“I’m not a heavy player in the BDSM world. I’ve never tried most things. No inclination to.” Rocke shrugged. “My biggest kink is threesomes. I like a dick in my mouth and one in my ass. You can use a cock ring, cock cage, handcuff me, nipple clips or spank my ass red…I’m game. But no permanent marks. I can’t have anything that’ll show in the locker room.”

“Why?” Carson prompted.

Rocke shifted in his seat. The leather creaked beneath him. They’d find out sooner or later—don’t leave marks if you don’t want to have to explain them to everyone in detail. The locker room was worse than a newsroom. They had to know everything. But he needed to trust Carson and Jeremiah. Something about the pair made him want to take a chance. They didn’t seem like others in his past who’d wanted to exploit his waning celebrity status.

“I’m a professional baseball player. I’m the shortstop for the Falcons. Eight years with a .285 batting average—well, until I blew out my knee. ACL injury three games from the playoffs and we’re in first place in our division. Sucked.” Rocke groaned. He’d given away a lot of info.

“We saw that play. You’re lucky to be standing without crutches.” Jeremiah rounded the sofa and sat beside his partner. “And you still got the double play.”

“I did.” The tips of his ears burned. They’d seen him on the field? “I have to ask—who’s your favorite team?”

“Grizzlies,” Carson replied. “The team that took you out.”

“Ah.” Maybe, this wasn’t such a good idea. Rocke sank down in his seat. “They’re a formidable team. I wish I hadn’t gotten cocky.”

“You had to. It’s who you are.” Carson rubbed his chin with his index finger and thumb. “Who was your Dom before? We noticed you took a shine to Zane.”

“Everyone here.” Rocke snorted. The harder he’d tried to please a Dom, the faster he pushed them away. “You’ve probably heard all about me. I’m difficult.”

“How so?” Jeremiah reclined on the sofa and draped his arms across the back. “Details.”

Did they want to shame him? Jesus. “I like to talk. I don’t want to be demeaned. I’m not wild about wax and shit on my body.” His voice cracked, and the fury deep within him came to a head. “I want to be tied up and fucked. Use me like the God damn media does.”

He’d lost his temper. Fuck.

He couldn’t breathe. Rocke rested his head in his hands. “Sorry. I’m good at following orders, but I tend to top from the bottom. I’m hard to control, I guess.” They’d boot him just like the others. He might as well get up and leave…once his knee decided to cooperate. He closed his eyes and focused on controlling the pain in his soul. If he pushed the searing hurt deep, it wouldn’t bother him.

“Hard to control is in the eye of the beholder.” Carson placed his hand on Rocke’s thigh. “You may be one of the more challenging subs, but it’s not a death sentence. It simply means you haven’t found the right Doms—until now.”
