Writing and Music… My Blurred Reality Playlist @MeganSlayer #music #writing #contemporaryromance #romance #dfrkw

I wasn’t sure what to write about today so I thought I’d talk about my contribution to the Dallas Fire and Rescue Kindle World, Blurred Reality. In my novella, my hero is a musician and famous. The other hero? Not so much. To get into the headspace for their story of accidents, a crazy Labrador retriever and crazed fans plus romance… I had to have some tunes of my own to listen to and often. What’d I listen to?

Killpop by Slipknot – I love the sensuality and manicness of this song. It’s sexy, but a little unhinged. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhJh5_6MuCk)

It’s No Good by Depeche Mode – again, it’s sensual and made for getting in the mood to write the love scenes easier. Plus, the video is silly. I watched it as a stress-reliever. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aieEZ950d1I)

Sympathy for the Devil by Motorhead – this song seemed to fit a lot of the music the band Disaster Transport, the hero’s band, would play. I love this version because it’s gritty and Lemmy’s voice fits it so well. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt4Xx3vX3Lg)

Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp – this song is a tad before my time, but I love it and it fit the story. Every time I heard it, I’d be jazzed to write more. It made those characters talk a ton!! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsV-rQ23bus)

In a Mist and Singin’ the Blues by Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Traumbauer – these along with a few other jazz songs inspired the hero’s love of music and his desire to play more than just rollicking music. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ue9igC7flI)

Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller – another soft, romantic song that inspired the sensual scenes in Blurred Reality. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuVfmfaNupQ)

I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick – it’s a good, fast song that helped write the action scenes. Grin. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJs_L7yq5qE)

I have more on the playlist. Some by Benny Goodman, a few by Duke Ellington, most of the Evans Blue albums and a few Beatles tunes.

I need music to write mostly because I can’t write with silence. It just doesn’t work. What about you? Do you like noise when you work? Or are you a silence kind of person? Let me know. J

Doctor, Doctor and Opposites Attracting! Writing Doc Cedarwood with @MeganSlayer #mmromance #mm

Originally posted at the Dirty Birdies Blog! Check it out there: http://wp.me/p6bvcM-1Gr

I like to play with opposites and second chances in my books. I never set out to write a specific opposites attract tale or decide from the beginning that I’m going to give the characters each a second chance. The stories tend to come out that way.

Doc Cedarwood started out as a conversation between another author and me. I’d been to the emergency room related to a surgery I’d had shortly before (Don’t worry, I was fine, but needed to go and I’m back to tip top shape now). The doctor who cared for me while in the ER was…well, he was handsome and had a southern drawl. For what I’d gone in for, needless to say, I was embarrassed.

Anyway, I wanted to turn my embarrassment into a story. I mean, why not turn it into something good? So the ER doctor became one of the heroes in my Single Father Society series with Loose Id. But who could I pair up with Aiden, the clean, sterile doctor? I didn’t have to look long. Matt came right to the forefront. He’s a mechanic and a former addict. Yeah, he’s going to be an interesting potential partner for Aiden.  They’ve both got pasts and both deserve a second chance.

But don’t take my word for it. Check out Doc Cedarwood for yourself and see what you think!

Matt Phillips equated dating with disaster, but sees himself as an eternal optimist. When he sees Aiden, he wants to give relationships a try. Every cell in his body screams to get the sexy doctor naked and in his bed. But Matt has demons and addictions he’s still working through. Will he fall prey to his past or learn and move forward with the hot doctor?

Strange Bedfellows with @MeganSlayer #signings #romance #funny

Check it Out Banner

I happened to be watching an old Clark Gable/Carole Lombard movie when I realized I needed to write a post for Dirty Birdies. The premise for the movie was two people who probably shouldn’t work out actually doing so. It reminded me of a few book signings I’ve done. You see, I have an interesting talent when it comes to book signings. Either I’m placed next to my friends, or I’m placed next to my polar opposite. Don’t believe me?

One of my very first signings happened to be at my local library. They did an interesting event called Cascade of Authors. Basically, they brought together a whole slew of authors and let us talk about what we wrote. As a mixer, it worked well. Now everyone who knows me or has read Megan Slayer knows I write hot. Real hot. Damn hot. HAWT. For some reason, the organizers thought it would be smart to place me next to a nun. Yes. I didn’t mind being next to her. I thought it was rather interesting. I’ve never been a nun and knew nothing about them other than what I’d see in the movies or television. I know not all nuns are the same, but this one made certain I knew that my books weren’t ‘appropriate’ for the library. Of course, the cover she took issue with was of a single girl. It’s the cover for When You’re With Me. It’s not as bad as it could be. Then the nun insisted on asking me during the Q&A how many books I had out. Back then it was closer to a hundred. I guess that’s not what she wanted to hear. She refused to talk to a ‘smut’ writer and hurried out of there as soon as she could. ☹

At a different year, but the same event, the Cascade of Authors, I was placed next to a Friar. Uh-huh. He had beads made by children in an African country and was giving them out to anyone who bought one of his books. Now this particular year, I brought my M/M titles to the event. I’d written one about football players and wanted to talk about it. Instead of being put off like I thought he might be, the friar bought a copy. We had a great conversation about his mission work and getting young people involved in the church. Did I mention we were placed at the one table that wasn’t in the semi-circle with the other authors? We joked it was because we were so polarizing. It was a great experience. Strange, but it worked.

Now, I don’t just seem to be placed next to the religious set. Nope. I have a knack for being placed next to sweet romance authors, too. I don’t mind the sweet authors. Heck, some of my very best friends write sweet. They write mystery, sweet and pretty much everything. But one time in particular, I was placed next to a person who wrote sweet. As soon as she found out what I wrote, she wanted to be moved. I understand the whole idea of our heat levels not meshing so it could be a problem. Sweet and super spicy. Hee hee. Needless to say, we weren’t separated. But the funniest part? We became fast friends. Being thrown together was the nicest thing that could’ve happened.

So I guess being the dirty birdie has actually been a blessing. More of one that I thought. I get to write what my heart wants, work with the characters that chatter to me all of the time. It doesn’t matter where I’m placed. I always have a good time and make the best of everything. What about you? Have you ever been placed in a strange situation? How’d you handle it?

Getting Caught with a #Book ~ with @MeganSlayer (And a New Release!)

Originally posted on the Dirty Birdies blog: http://wp.me/p6bvcM-1DP

I’ve always loved to read. As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved books. If I could have been reading all the time, I would’ve been. But, I had to go to school and learn things, too.

That said, I did get into trouble once and it was big trouble. Sounds silly looking back on the moment, but at the time, it was…er…murder.

I was in the sixth grade (Maybe it was the 7th, I’m not totally sure now), but I was in English class and supposed to be diagramming sentences. Right. It wasn’t a difficult task. But, I didn’t want to. You see…I’d picked up a copy of Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. I blew through the book. Like, didn’t pay attention in science class or math, I was so engrossed. I had to know what would happen next. I hid the book under the desk and read instead of doing whatever it was we were learning. Hey, the book practically cried out for me to read it. Unfortunately, my English teacher didn’t share my vigor. Nope. She caught me. Three times. Each time after being redirected, so to speak, I’d go right back to my book. Now you’d think reading a book wouldn’t be so horrible. I was reading! But I was supposed to be working on diagramming sentences so I’d know what a hanging gerund was (I’m still not entirely sure, but that’s not important right now). Yeah, so the fourth time was the last straw for the teacher. I still wasn’t done with the book, but she wasn’t having any of this. She took the book away. Yep. Poof! Gone. No book. Sad Megan. So not fun. I had to actually diagram those sentences and was in trouble. She pulled me aside after class and reminded me I was in school to learn… not read. GASP! I know. She called my mother and reminded her that I wasn’t paying attention. Oh, boy, did I get into trouble when I got home.

All because of a book. To this day, I love Murder on the Orient Express and will take time here and there to read it. It’s my form of fighting the machine, I guess. Hey, you have to take time to read. 🙂

Sometimes switching things up really does mean getting the guy.

Allan Clark thought his life as a wide receiver for the Wildcats was over the moment he was told he’d be the new punt returner. He’d thought he didn’t want to be a special teams player. He’d rather have the limelight. But once he starts returning punts, he realizes this was where he should’ve been all along. Speaking of perks, he now gets to spend time with the sexy kicker, Tyler Leigh. Maybe this switch is the best thing that could’ve happened to him.

Unlike Allan, Tyler isn’t planning on going into the draft or playing football for the rest of his life. He’s got other plans, though a side trip in the sheets with Allan isn’t off his radar. He’s wanted Allan since he joined the team. But Tyler’s got baggage and an overzealous ex-boyfriend hell-bent on making his life miserable. With Allan, he sees a bright spot.

Will these two seeming opposites leave their desires on the field, or will they find common ground together and score?
