Writing and Music… My Blurred Reality Playlist @MeganSlayer #music #writing #contemporaryromance #romance #dfrkw

I wasn’t sure what to write about today so I thought I’d talk about my contribution to the Dallas Fire and Rescue Kindle World, Blurred Reality. In my novella, my hero is a musician and famous. The other hero? Not so much. To get into the headspace for their story of accidents, a crazy Labrador retriever and crazed fans plus romance… I had to have some tunes of my own to listen to and often. What’d I listen to?

Killpop by Slipknot – I love the sensuality and manicness of this song. It’s sexy, but a little unhinged. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhJh5_6MuCk)

It’s No Good by Depeche Mode – again, it’s sensual and made for getting in the mood to write the love scenes easier. Plus, the video is silly. I watched it as a stress-reliever. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aieEZ950d1I)

Sympathy for the Devil by Motorhead – this song seemed to fit a lot of the music the band Disaster Transport, the hero’s band, would play. I love this version because it’s gritty and Lemmy’s voice fits it so well. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt4Xx3vX3Lg)

Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp – this song is a tad before my time, but I love it and it fit the story. Every time I heard it, I’d be jazzed to write more. It made those characters talk a ton!! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsV-rQ23bus)

In a Mist and Singin’ the Blues by Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Traumbauer – these along with a few other jazz songs inspired the hero’s love of music and his desire to play more than just rollicking music. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ue9igC7flI)

Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller – another soft, romantic song that inspired the sensual scenes in Blurred Reality. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuVfmfaNupQ)

I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick – it’s a good, fast song that helped write the action scenes. Grin. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJs_L7yq5qE)

I have more on the playlist. Some by Benny Goodman, a few by Duke Ellington, most of the Evans Blue albums and a few Beatles tunes.

I need music to write mostly because I can’t write with silence. It just doesn’t work. What about you? Do you like noise when you work? Or are you a silence kind of person? Let me know. J

Matt busied himself with straightening the counter space and trying not to watch Jacen. Fuck. How could he not? The man featured in his dreams and had become his favorite spank bank material. He swept his gaze over Jacen. The denim shorts hugged his hips and accentuated the strength in his legs. Jacen rubbed the back of his neck with his fingers and flexed his upper body.

Jesus. Was Jacen trying to turn him on? If so, he’d accomplished his mission. Matt plopped onto the stool and pressed his knees together. Blood rushed to his cock and his mouth watered. Just a few touches. Kisses. He didn’t want much. Really.

“Mother fucker.” Jacen whipped around and held his phone in a white-knuckled grasp as he strode back to the desk. “He’s a piece of shit. Where are those peas?”

Matt offered up the bag. “Whoever it is, I hope you lit into him.” He shut the laptop down, then moved the device to the lower portion of the counter. “Better pick up your key before you forget.” He slid the card across to Jacen. “Have a good night…well, a better one than you’ve had so far.”

“Huh?” Jacen glared at Matt and plunked the bag back onto his bruise. “Are you here all night? I thought Cady hired on people to work the desk so you and her weren’t stuck.”

“She did, but this is my night. I have to earn my keep somehow.” He grinned to hide his displeasure. “I can’t feed my music and running habits without some source of income.”

Jacen tucked his phone into his pocket and lingered at the counter. “Want some company? I came here to work on music, yeah, but that wasn’t the only reason.” He offered up the bag. “I’ve melted this.”

“I’ll stick it back in the freezer. No problem.” He gripped the melting frozen food. “Stick around a moment in case anyone comes in and I’ll put it back.” He left Jacen alone long enough to put the peas in the fridge. He’d probably make them for lunch the next day instead of wasting them. When he returned, Jacen had rounded the counter.

“All good?” Jacen asked.

“I’ve got lunch for tomorrow.” He tensed. “Thanks for holding down the fort.” He expected Jacen to leave, but instead, he crept closer to Matt.

“I didn’t just return for Rory and the music. I came here for you, too.”

“Me?” He frowned. “What?” He had to be hearing Jacen wrong. No way Jacen meant that.

“Uh, yeah. You.”

Rory stood in front of the door of room four and eased the key into the lock. The knob didn’t turn. Maybe it was sticky. He tried again, but with no luck. He rested his head against the door and sighed. Shit. He yanked the key free. He’d have to go back downstairs.

“There you are.” The woman from the foyer rushed up to him. “Matt gave you the wrong key. Sorry. He mixed up the one for room five with four. No idea why or how, but here you go.” She brushed her hair from her face and eased the new key into the lock. “We could probably get card readers for the doors, but I can’t afford all of that tech right now.” She twisted the knob and opened the door. “There you go.”

“Thanks.” He headed into the room. Everything was white. White walls, white bedding, white desk and lamp, white couch. “It’s very clean in here.”

“Yeah, sorry. My grandmother liked white.” The girl shrugged. “It’s all vintage, so I can’t see getting rid of the furniture. Except the mattress. It’s new.” She massaged her temples. “Sorry. I get ahead of myself and don’t always say the right thing.”

“It’s fine.” He flopped onto the bed and breathed in the clean scent of the detergent. “I could sleep for a week.”

“Put the hang tag on the door if you don’t want to be disturbed. We don’t have food here, but the Chinese restaurant at the north end of the block delivers and the pizza place next door is good, too. We’ve got the pool on the ground floor and a lounge on the second floor. It’s not stocked right now, since I haven’t had guests in a while, but you’re free to go in there. We’ve got the piano and a stage.”

“A piano?” He rolled over and focused on her. In the better light, he saw her more of her features. He sat up. She stood no more than five-five and probably came up to his shoulder at best. The blue scarf he’d seen wasn’t a scarf, but rather a bright blue swath of her hair. Her blue eyes sparkled from behind dark rimmed glasses. He swept his gaze down her body. She wasn’t like any of the women he dated. Where she was short and buxom, his dates tended to be willowy and tall. The jeans hugged her curves and her tank top strained against her breasts. His mouth watered. He wasn’t one to fall in love at first sight, but she captivated him almost as much as the architecture.

“I’m Cady, by the way. If you call down to the desk, you’ll probably get me.”

 Now for that snog!!

She had no idea what he looked like in his Kane persona, but she had a feeling he oozed sex appeal. She allowed herself to think about him without his clothes on.

Tall and lanky, but strong. What would the ridges of his chest feel like under her fingers? She sandwiched her hands between her thighs to keep from reaching for him. Did he have tattoos? Would he kiss the back of her neck until she moaned and hold her during thunderstorms? Maybe whisper to her the words to his latest song?

“Cady?” Rory waved his hand in front of her face. “You in there?”

She snapped out of her daydream. “Fuck.”

“Not now, but eventually.” Rory smiled and leaned on the piano top. “What were you thinking about? I doubt you were that into the song.” He glanced over at the dog. “Henri liked it.”

“Huh?” He had her all out of sorts. Being honest now wouldn’t do her any good. “I was listening.”

He scooted across the bench until their knees touched. “You said fuck.” He curled his fingers under her chin. “Such a dirty word from a pretty mouth.”

She wasn’t sure if he’d crossed out of the realm of sexy to skeevy or if this was part of his persona. She shrugged and pulled away from him.

“What?” Rory scrambled to his feet. “What’d I do?”

“Nothing.” She backed up. “I just—I remembered I was needed at the desk.”

“No you weren’t.” He didn’t move. Just stared at her. “What’d I say that upset you?”

She rubbed her hands on her jeans. “The dirty word thing. It sounded pervy.”

“Oh.” He chuckled. “It wasn’t meant to.” He inched over to her. He towered over her and his hair dipped in front of his eyes. “I was trying to kiss you. I’ve never been good at romancing women. A crowd, yeah, but one woman? Nope. May I kiss you?”

“Me?” Her voice cracked. “Don’t you have a girlfriend or something? I’m sure you do. Probably lots of them.” What was she doing? He’d put the moves on her and she was pushing him away—the exact opposite of what she’d wanted.

“Nope.” He curled his fingers under her chin again. “I like you, Cady.” He brushed his nose against hers. “You intrigue me.”

She flattened her hands on her pants to keep from reaching for him. He intrigued her, too. She closed her eyes and although her brain screamed for her to put distance between her and him, she tipped her head to the side. The moment he fluttered his lips over hers, her insides superheated. She couldn’t breathe. He swiped his tongue across the seam of her mouth, then pressed the kiss further.

Oh my God. This is real. She smoothed her palms over his chest and he swallowed her sigh. Damn, the man was all muscle under the bulky sweatshirt. He eased his arms around her and held her flush against him. Being with him was dangerous. If she kept kissing him, her mind would wander and she’d get ideas like keeping things going with him. She knew better than to lower her defenses. He’d leave her. He was in a band and bands toured. This was a stop—maybe a long one—but still a pause. Eventually, he’d walk out of her life. She caught herself. What the hell was she doing? Overthinking. Yeah, he’d leave, but this was only a kiss. Not a declaration of love or even a night of passion.

Rory rested his forehead against hers and rubbed his nose on hers again. “I wish the bus hadn’t caught fire, but I’m glad we got to stop here.” He cupped her jaw in both hands. “I’m glad I met you.”

“Same here.” She closed her eyes and kissed him, this time taking the lead. She’d never know if she’d get her heart broken if she didn’t give Rory a try. He groaned into the kiss. The bulge in his sweat pants rubbed between her legs. The heat from his body overwhelmed her. Oh hell, she could get lost in his eyes and his arms.
