Writing and the Binge ~ Working and Once Upon a Time with @MeganSlayer #iamwriting #working #meganslayer

I’m notorious for having to have noise while I write. It’s crazy. I can’t concentrate when it’s quiet. Just doesn’t work. So this past weekend, I binged. I did. Once Upon a Time. First season. Why? I wanted to see Sebastian Stan. I admit it. Along with my thing for Cap, Young Professor X, Falcon, and Captain Hook…I’ve got a thing for Bucky/Winter Solider/White Wolf. Yep. And seeing him as the Mad Hatter was pretty great. He works the eyeliner well.

So I binged. I’m glad I kept going. Part way through the first season, I got a little bored, but finally…Mad Hatter.

While I binged, I wrote. I’m happy to say I finally have 9k on something accomplished. I had a few setbacks and started to think I wasn’t going to get anywhere. Between writer’s block and a few other things, I just felt stuck. Not now. Phew.

So what do you binge? Recently I’ve binged OUaT, plus Political Animals, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Suspect Behavior had Matt Ryan from Constantine. Sorry, I’m a sucker for that accent. Oh and I binged Constantine. Not all this weekend. This has been my month for the binge. What’s on your binge list?

I’ve been a tad down in the dumps of late. It happens. Life and other things get in the way. Sometimes the words just don’t come.

One my things I use to get back into a better mood is binge watch a few of my favorite shows or a movie or two. This time around my go-to means to get back into the writing spirit is the show M*A*S*H. There’s something about the show that makes me feel better.

When I was a kid, I used to wish Hawkeye was my dad. Sounds kind of silly, right? I mean, the guy is old enough to be my grandfather and he’s not exactly a very good role model. He’s pushy, arrogant, chauvinistic and blunt…but he also taught me to have an open mind. Watching him and Trapper together makes me smile. I love Henry, too. He’s a little overly baked, but that’s a good thing. He’s got a huge heart, plus he had some of the best lines. I’m more fond of Margaret as the show went on because she found her place and backbone more. She’s a great role model, too.

I don’t watch entire seasons at a time. I don’t have the time to do that. Two or three episodes are enough and get me back into a better mood.

But there are other shows out there to binge. I know that. I’ve binged on Law and Order, Law and Order UK, White Collar and a few others. I’m open to suggestions. Got any? I’m all ears.

Monday Binge-Worthy TV ~ Soap! #television #billycrystal #soap #soapopera

Monday Movie Rundown BannerI thought this week instead of the movie rundown, I’d switch over to the small screen for a week. I’ve never been very good at binge watching, but there are some shows that have to be binged. I’ll pepper a few more in from time to time, but the first binge-worthy show is Soap!

I love soap operas. Even though they’re over the top and somewhat silly at times, that’s what makes them fun. How far out can the story line go? How far fetched? Then there’s the concept of going from the plausible to the completely impossible.

Soap! manages to encapsulate all the fun of the soap operas, while keeping the sheer impossibility and improbability. The characters are funny, have moments of intelligence and not so much, but they’ve always got heart.

I think my favorite characters are Mary and Jodie. For all of her insecurities and foibles, Mary Campbell never stops trying. She overcame alcoholism, had an alien baby…oh and has a step-son with a doll. She never loses her sense of humor or realism. Then there’s Jodie. I loved him, too. He’s trying to find his place. He’s gay, but his heart leads him in different directions. Oh, and he becomes a father.

For the late 1970s, this is pretty advanced stuff. Yes there are the quintessential horrible jokes and the comments that would never get past the censors these days, but if you take the show in the context of its time, it’s a riot. I loved every moment. The only thing I wish? There would’ve been more episodes!!
