This week’s feature for the #evernighties challenge is one I’ve thought about often. What would I do if I couldn’t be a writer…

I have a confession to make. Before I became a writer, I was a teacher. I loved teaching, but due to downsizing in the school district where I worked and not much demand for art teachers, I got out of the business. I miss teaching, but yet I don’t. I loved the classroom setting and loved the kids, but the politics in the school district wasn’t much fun.

So if I were going to stop writing, although I don’t see that happening, I’d probably go back to teaching.  I’m a mom, too, so I might stick to that. Okay, I’ll always be a mom. Toting cross-country gear, driving from meet to meet and making sure those spikes fit is actually pretty rewarding.

What about you? If you’re a writer, what would you do if you couldn’t write? If you’re a reader, what do you do?

In the meantime, here’s a little bit about my latest, award-winning, novella from Evernight Publishing, Soft Clay!

Soft Clay by Megan Slayer clay

book 4 in the Celestial Mates series

#paranormal #romance #kindle

Celestial Mates, 4

Charlie needs someone who can understand him. A person to cherish him. Male or female, he doesn’t care. He’s intrigued by Nike’s statue. Call him infatuated. But she’s a statue and they don’t come to life from true love’s kiss, do they?

One of Those Days… with @MeganSlayer #writing #life #authorlife #calamity #meganslayer

I won’t lie. I’m not always the luckiest person. Some days, I can’t get a break. Take yesterday for an example. I have a story to finish. Granted, the deadline is self-imposed, but there’s a deadline. Fine. I’ve been working like mad to get this story finished. It’s there, but it has to go into the computer. Fine.

But then life came in and ka-bam…I’ve got more than it feels like I can handle.

First, I write to movies and music. For whatever reason, the DVD drive on my laptop doesn’t like me, so I can’t put a DVD in to watch it. Fine. I’ll use iTunes. That went kerplooey, too. I don’t know what’s wrong with it, but it won’t even open. Yeah, so my noise isn’t around.

Then I went to do laundry. Everything went fine until I got the last load into the dryer. I start writing and hear this BOOM. Oh no… Something in the dryer blew (no, it wasn’t full of lint. I’m careful to remove that each time.) and it’s toast. Thankfully, I still have the old drying rack in the house and can string up a clothes line, but still. Ugh.

Then I went to close the window and at the exact moment I closed it, the cat decided to climb into the window. I pinched his poor paw. He’s okay and I’ve kept an eye on him, but man… I can’t get a break.

So I’m off to try to write…again. Hopefully, nothing blows up, gets mushed or ends up in an error. And if you’re interested in my latest release, here’s my rock star, Kross. I hope you enjoy him.

Resisting the Rock Star by Megan Slayer

Contemporary Erotic Novel

M/F Pairing

From SuperNova Indie Publishing

What the rock god wants, he gets—including her.

Mason ‘Kross’ Khan left the rock and roll stage to connect with the son he never knew existed. He’s used to electrifying crowds and romancing the ladies. Money’s never been an object. He’s not looking for a relationship, but when he meets the saucy brunette at a club, he’s smitten. Danya’s perfect—curvy, smart and has no idea he’s a giant in the music industry. The one-night stand is just what he needs and he’s convinced he’ll never see Danya again—until he attends conference night at the local high school.

Danya Littrell isn’t just his one-night stand. She’s also his son’s art teacher and the woman who sparks his muse. Can he balance parenthood, a relationship with Danya and his music career? Or will his secrets be too much for the relationship to withstand?

What’s your favorite book convention to attend and why? with @meganslayer #conventions #ragt18 #writing #authorlife

UnderwoodKeyboard Banner

I have two different conventions I like to attend. I’m sort of an oddball, though. The first big convention I love to attend would be the Lori Foster Reader and Author Get Together (#RAGT18) down in Cincinnati, Ohio. This convention always sells out and almost always in a matter of minutes.

The thing about this con is that it’s smallish. There are only 500 attendees, including the authors and it’s mostly readers. It’s all in one hotel and the hotel is small so there’s little worry of getting lost. One hallway and two turns…and you’ve seen it all. But it’s like being with family. Many of the same people attend and it’s fun. It’s not stuffy. You’re hanging out with your friends. Really.

There are raffles, lots of little things where you can hang with authors and the money for the raffles go to the animal shelter. You’re helping critters and could win a basket. I love it. Want to know more? http://readerauthorgettogether.com/

The other convention I like to attend that’s really not a convention, but rather a tiny event, is the Books and Brunch event put on by the Friends of the Keystone-LaGrange Public Library. Now, I see you’re thinking…a friends of the library event? Must be small. It is. There are only four featured authors. It’s only a couple hour event. But being smallish helps. You get to talk to the authors and you’re served a wonderful brunch for only $12 a ticket. How can you beat that?

I love being able to talk to the authors, to have great food and mostly help the library. That’s the big thing for me. For this event, all the money goes to the library for the renovations to the existing building. How cool is that? Find out more right here: http://www.elyrialibrary.org/KLCLFriends_Home.html

Life with Dogs ~ Compassion ~ with @meganslayer #lifewithdogs #pups #authorlife #meganslayer #compassion

Darlington 2018This last couple weeks haven’t been my favorites. I had a couple of setbacks and found out my grandfather isn’t doing well. It’s been tough on me. But I’ve had bright spots. I’m back to walking 2.5+ miles every day and while I’m not writing as much as I’d like, the laptop is working. I can write. I’m writing a little and making some progress.

But the bright spot has been my pup. I know she’s older and she’s slowing down. She snores louder than she used to and can’t see where she’s going. She tends to pass gas right next to me and isn’t perfect, but who is?

What she is, is loyal. She knows when I’m down and when I need a hug. She knows when I want company. She’s been there for me this last couple weeks when I needed her. I’m glad. Without her, I’d be in a world of hurt. She’s my dog. She hangs out with me while I binge watch shows and write.

She’s not perfect, like I said. She’s a champion gas passer. But she’s the best. I’m glad I’ve got her.

I realize this isn’t the longest post and it’s probably a little boring or over the top. Oh well. I needed to get this out. I needed to talk a little about what’s been going on and how I’m dealing. Thanks for reading.

Life with Dogs with @meganslayer #lifewithdogs #authorlife #dogs

Darlington 2018

I love my dog. I really do. She’s a great dog. Loyal, sweet and my constant shadow. She’s a great dog.

But she’s got this reverse sneeze gagging thing she does that’s…well…gross.

What do I mean? It sounds like she’s about the throw up, but she doesn’t. Just sort of gags and makes gross sounds. Oh and if I’m lucky, she toots, too. Yeah. It’s great. Stinky and noisy at the same time.

So here I am, trying to write a love scene and what’s she doing? You guessed it.

Excuse me while I get the gas mask…
