I love the library. I don’t know too many authors who don’t. There’s something magical about being surrounded by books. Of course, I’d love for the library to be mine. I mean…lots of books and all the time in the world to play with them…sign me up. Finding a new author or new adventure is one of my favorite things.
But since April is Love Your Library month, I wanted to share a story about my love for my library.
When I was in high school, we used to get what seemed like a paper a month to write. Now I never minded writing papers, but back then I didn’t have a computer, so that meant typing on the old typewriter. Also, I wasn’t the greatest typist back then. I somehow managed to squeak through my high school career without taking a typing course. Remember those? Yeah, I never took one. I think I was too busy hanging out in the art room and they might have changed the requirements so I got out of it. I don’t remember.
What I do remember was having to go to the library, quite voluntarily, to hunt up books for the papers. I’d spend as long as I could at the card catalog. I loved the smell and the feel of the cards. It was an adventure. Find the info and hunt down the book. I had an idea of what I’d be finding, but then there was the discovery of the info inside. I’d hunt down the book and usually sit in the aisle to give the book a cursory read.
Now the thing about me that used to drive my classmates crazy was my insane ability to drag most of those books with me to school. I’d have stacks as high as I could carry of my books. I’d claim I was reading them–which I probably was when I had free time–but it was also a bizarre status symbol. I guess I was just that loony that I wanted everyone to know I had these books and was doing my work. Yep, I was a nerd or a geek…whichever…in school. I liked to learn (still do) and didn’t mind the work. That’s why I loved the library. I could escape to the library and do what I loved–learn.
What about you? Do you love the library? What’s you favorite section? Mine’s the biography and romance sections, although I’m partial to mysteries, too. Do you miss the card catalog–the one with the actual cards? Or are you partial to the computer search? I’d love to know.
Now a little bit about my latest release, Bed of My Truck.
